About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Start hiding your cameras in stumps or buy some fake rocks to hide them in, get creative. Place them up high as well, they’ll be harder to reach and go unnoticed. The more you can blanket the area with, the more likely you’ll capture the trespassers before they start using your land to poach from. It’s infuriating when people disrespect your private property, and I hope you can catch them! Edit: considering your ongoing tension with hound hunters, I wonder if they’ve watched your videos and seen your footage of your mature bear? My thought is could they be planning to poach him as a form of revenge possibly?

Morgan - I have a conversation a few years ago with a retired " geek ", who have moved to their family farm and was fed up with poachers coming onto their farm to steal fish and other wildlife... He suspected a neighbour, so after a few unpleasant arguments in the local pub, he set up several 'smart water' sprays along the likely paths the neighbour would take. - Clear water containing a long lasting U.V glowing dye. A couple of weeks later he saw the guy in the pub and asked the landlord to turn out the lights and pulled out his 'blacklight' torch....Guess who glowed in the dark...Nobody trespassed after that.

I agree! Although, placement of the cell service ones might be limited if there is not complete cell coverage of the farm’s perimeter. Maybe place another trail camera that can't easily be detected at the one they stole the SD card from and see who it might be. Also ask your neighbor if they've seen anyone lurking around. Enjoyed the footage of the other trail cameras, lots of wildlife to see. Thanks for sharing, hope it doesn't happen again.

You could try making your cameras harder to see/find or place them in hard to access locations (e.g. up high). That makes them less likely to be noticed by trespassers and, even if they do, hopefully they can't reach them. Only alternative I see to that is the expensive ones that don't store footage locally.

Sorry to hear, Morgan. I grew up on a hobby farm outside a small town in Minnesota; we had some issues with folks casing the area because we were so far out of town, especially after my dad died and my brother and I left for college. I know SD cards aren’t cheap (neither are new trail cams). If you can, I’d say put a word in with your local sheriff and see if you can get some increased patrols around your property, especially if this sort of thing escalates.

What you need is a streaming video recorder / server back at the farm house that auto uploads to cloud storage. Capture all your live motion detection video feed via solar powered WiFi cams and store the video footage in the cloud. Set it up to auto delate old footage after 14 days or whatever time period you want. That way if any trail cam or web cam gets stolen, you have the footage safely stored back at base or in the cloud. Those systems do exist as commercial CCTV security products, so I suggest shop around for the best deals. That way you will retain footage at least. Also if you have four cams setup up for 360 degree capture, then you will probably capture who is stealing your cams or flash memory cards etc... I suggest this is an important upgrade for your video security system. Can also be used for household security.

Buy more trail cameras and then hide them in overlapping fields of fire so if someone steals one camera they will be seen doing so on a different camera. Do not dismiss this theft too lightly. The individual who did this could be probing the strength of your perimeter defenses and not just a random trespasser. He might be scouting out an area for a future illegal game hunt. Place several more game cameras at higher elevations that require tree climbing skills or a ladder or even place some in hardened boxes that would require tools and noise to break into. I am not sure what your internet service is like but if possible purchase a camera that has automatic upload to the cloud capabilities so if the camera is tampered with the images taken right before tampering are captured.

Morgan, it is very disheartening to learn of this invasion on your property. Perhaps consider a wireless, outdoor surveillance camera(s), one that will record to the Cloud. I know this means extra expense for you (cost of system plus cloud-based video surveillance) but due to the fact that you love & respect your farm, it's wildlife, and your own beloved creatures, perhaps a couple/few strategically placed, high mounted cameras (for surveillance purpose only) would be the answer. Batteries might have to be charged once monthly, depending on brand, etc. But because they record to something beyond site, it would help to answer the "who" question. And maybe, because you are on social, you can let us all know you have done this, and with luck, that will decrease the "who's"! Wishing you the best always.

Put a cheap trail cam as bait in the same place as the old one. Put a video of you saying "GOTCHA, POACHER!!" On the SD card. Then put a high quality trail cam up high where the poacher can't reach so you can catch him stealing.

I use Spypoint cell cams for security at my off grid place.....I have one at my gate, very visible, most people pull up to the gate, get out of their vehicle, see the camera and leave. And I have several around my outbuildings....I have quite the collection of trespasser pics that I drop off at the RCMP once a year....The guilty ones usually have their hoodies up trying to hide their faces...but what they don't realise is I now have their license plate recorded on a hidden cell cam...In NS Canada you only need one plate on the rear of your vehicle....I love the new technology as before my place was broken into twice....6 years now and no more break-ins...

More than once I’ve gone out to shoot photos with my camera only to discover I’d left the SD card at home in the computer. Have you considered that as a possibility? It seems more likely than someone stealing it because if it were theft wouldn’t they just steal the entire camera?
@SohiHien

because they weren't there to steal things. They were out there likely looking to hunt and noticed they had been caught on camera so stole the card to remove evidence of their tresspass.

You should report it to the cops and you can post on your local FB groups with a screenshot asking if anyone knows the individual. Mention they stole how many SD cards and how much you are out of and that they are trespassing. Even if nothing comes of it it might get around to them and teach them some shame.

Trespassers are infuriating. Keep a heads up for more. Might those tasty little apples be crab apples? My mom use to make the best crab apple jelly when I was a kid. We we went to the same lightening ravaged old tree for a few years. Then my teenage years kicked in. 🙂

what my friend used to do is have two cameras in close proximity to each other so they both visible to each other, that way if one is tampered with the other will pick it up and visa versa, also gets amazing shots of animals behind the cameras

@GoldShawFarm we had Border Patrol and FWLS employees regularly on our property when we first moved onto our farm on the Canadian/Washington border. We also had poachers, and fought a 3 year battle to stop the county from spraying herbicides and pesticides along the almost 2 miles of our property along the county road. By the time I left the farm, we had used phytoremediation to restore the soil, leach out the mercury and other heavy metals that had been illegally dumped by the paper industry, and restored acres upon acres of wild, uncut forest. We had a similar mission as you: Heal the environment and demonstrate that sustainable agriculture is environmentally responsible, benefits local wildlife, and becomes cost effective. We didn't have trail cams, we did have the legal rights to loudly announce "NO TRESPASSING" and follow up with firing warning shots to deter further trespassing. Training my 7 Rottweilers to patrol the property and not cross the perimeter line (take new dogs to pee the property line daily while doing perimeter training with a 20' longe line to concretize "we DO NOT PASS" is very effective), in addition to the loud announcement and firing warning shots, elimiated the poachers.... as well as Border Patrol, LEO, and Forestry & Wildlife Services from coming on our property. Eventually I re-established a working relationship with the county and federal officials, and had better support at protecting not only our livestock but also the wild animals that included our farm in their territory. Living together is a novel approach in 20th/21st century USA. Doesn't mean it shouldn't be done, or isn't sustainable.

>all they stole was an expensive piece of storage that can be used to find their identities and prove if they were doing other illegal things on a person's private property. Man shut the fuck up, this is not the equivalent of TP a house, and even if it was. TPing a house is fucking awful and takes a long time to clean up, it's even dangerous if the owner is someone older. They either have to risk their health and body to clean it up or waste their money hiring someone to clean it up for them. Gods you sound like someone who this they weren't an asshole in school, aren't you?
