To touch is to feel, or something: Dell P2418HT

So not for everyone but a pretty cool monitor none-the-less. The downside of the review is it has made her want one for work space. Didn't think I would enjoy using it, but it was pretty enjoyable.
If you're in to design, I won't presume to know much about it, or swear by this, but for certain design applications it seems great. Will it replace Wacom pads for intricate art? No, probably not. Thankfully a graphic designer I know gave me some insight in to this.

Dell Model numbers are simple once you understand them. "P" means Pro Series. "24" is the size (i.e. 24"). "18" is the model year. "H" I think means "Height-adjustable stand"...or it could mean HD as in 1080p. "T" means touch capable. So a P2317H is a pro series 23" monitor, model introduced in 2017 with Height-adjustable stand.

I got one of these for free maybe two years ago.. Someone left it in the "free area" of my building. I grabbed it thinking it might come in handy sometime.. Stuck it in a closet and never thought much more about it. Finally pulled the thing out the other month and ended up being pretty impressed by the thing. I connect it to a macbook so no touchscreen functionality but beyond that, it's definitely been a solid display for a 1080.. I mostly use it as a second display for running youtube in fullscreen in the background or gaming while keeping my laptop's display available and usable for other stuff. Anyway, still a totally acceptable display. Thanks stranger who left it for me!

Display ports pretty much work the same as hdmi when in 1080p. Dell SFF PCs even those back in the 2012 era have display ports and most GPUs you could upgrade a dell Optiplex or most SSF Pcs for example use DP. With the touchscreen selling as a basis for workplace use (mainly) it makes more sense especially if used with other DELL product. GREAT VID and I'm pretty sure i'm gonna get one

Out of all the companies model names at least Dell's are self explanatory. P stands for Professional catagory, 24 is the display size, 18 is the year it was designed, H stands for full HD. It's super easy and convenient when you know how to use it.

There are brands with worst confusing serial numbers, Prism+ is one of them ...many others ..Dell serialized is intuitive...24 for monitor size, 18year of manufactured,H for HoghDef and T for Touchscreen. but hey, they're all good monitors...this monitor helps me with my actual touchscreen CBT of Gulfstream NavDisplay n inputs ! Man, I have this P2418HT monitor and would feel duped by this review. This monitor just cannot handle any kind of handwriting or drawing. Very rough sketching with a dull capacitive stylus is all it can handle. There is no known support for any active stylus.

​@@manor-studios I use the 2418HT, even with the same stylus eighty-six does. Imagine stick figures drawn by a 5 year old. Thats what you can draw with this monitor. As an engineer, I find it useful on Teams to be able to circle and highlight certain things. I'm not looking for precision drawing on this monitor, and revert to my ipad with an ipencil for that. If you're asking as an artist, there's no way I would recommend this monitor unless you're only moving chunky items like eighty-six was showing. If you notice, eighty-six does not actually draw anything with it.

most DELL desktops come with DP only connectors for video, since at least the Optiplex 3040 - 4th gen intel core i, and VGA is the most common connector present in professionnal environnements. so, it indeed makes sense to include DP and VGA cable ;)

I agree. As a supplier for Enterprise equipment I can tell you that although we do send an HDMI with every install with our techs, we get 99% of them back. All of our Enterprise docks have DP or mDP, only a few support HDMI. Our DP allows for Daisy chaining multiple monitors through 1 cable on compatible monitors, the HDMI does not.

The touch feature works via the built in hardware and digitizer screen. If you are using this monitor as display 2 for instance, as long as you have it connected via USB this monitor will be usable as a touch screen. Just in case you are asking 'if I have two monitors, one touch, one not, will they both become touch because of this one' the answer is no.

This monitor caught my attention I was considering a Microsoft Studio or a Lenovo A940, you mentioned that the contrast and color was slightly off. I would use this monitor to edit photos. Just to be clear are you saying it does not do a good job in color reproduction?

The best way to get the most out of the monitor if you are in to hardcore color accuracy and editing would be to use a Spyder or something to calibrate it. They are pricey though so maybe borrowing one would be cheaper/easier =\

Have you experienced any issues like a sort of "touch sleep?" By that I mean if I stop using the touch feature for about a minute it seems to not be touch active anymore until I power off the monitor and power it back on. I've checked the drivers and still experience this issue.

Yes, I have 2 connected to a surface book 2 (3 touch devices). There is a tool to detect touch devices and they work however you want. I also tested them with an Asus laptop and they work the same.

@@shivaprasad9229 yes but with a different stand. The included one only rotates horizontally and also as it's showed in the video. I tried what you mention but for me it wasn't ergonomic, in my experience I think you need the touch surface close enough not to flex your arms so much, you are not carrying the surface as a tablet or phone so the interaction is a lot different. I get the most out of these monitors close to my keyboard, ideally with my elbows supported by the desk. I recommend you to try with the included stand.

Why would an HDMI cable make the most sense for a FullHD monitor? DisplayPort is just fine and it's also a free and open standard.

I prefer DP for many many many reasons - HDMI makes the most sense as its the most widely accepted standard. Your average consumer may not be using DP i.e a laptop, or rig that doesn't have DP (while it's becoming a more common standard these days, it's not the most common). DP is also more for higher resolution and refreshrates - which this monitor really isn't. 1080p @60hz - if it were 1440p or 2160p @ 60-120 DP would be a must...but not in this case. the HDMI 1.4 standard makes the most sense. It was more of a: "Strange they wouldn't go ahead and give you both, or give you the HDMI over the DP"

P2418HT - Touch Screen feature is working in a different monitor I want to use PH2418HT as a secondary monitor, but the touch screen feature don't work properly. You have to run the "Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input" setup in windows 10 so windows knows which screen is the touchscreen.

That's a great question! So while most phones can be adapted to display on to monitors such as this - the biggest issue is the onboard acceleration that requires an OS like Windows. the monitor needs to be connected via USB to a compatible device to know to use the digitizer - otherwise its just a display. In short: 'no' unless someone has a work around for this.

Basic trouble shooting to make sure it isn't the digitizer - Check updates for your PC, then open device manager and make sure the monitor is detected with no issues (if able right click and check for driver updates on the monitor in device manager). Try it on a different PC to see if the problem persists. If it's a specific dead zone and can be re-created on a separate device it may be that it's hardware failure. un-plug and re-plug with you have not attempted this also.

I am looking for for something that I can Travel with when I have do not have to be in the office 3 months of the year. I can work from anywhere 9 months of the year. I know I can find a bag to hold the monitor. But what to do with the base..will the base fit in my Swiss back back or check it in my luggage?

Ted Gibson I’m not sure if I have a good answer for that. The base would pose to be an obstacle for your situation.. if I think ‘if this were me’ I’d probably try and design my transportation around what I want transported and look in to small duffel bags. I’d be worried about the base damaging the monitor in a Swiss backpack type bag.

That is just a monitor - you'll need an actual PC

Good afternoon, what are the models of the pens you use with him? I have one too and wanted to buy pens to use with it.

Any capacitive pen would work out here. The ones I used were just bargain ones from a Big Lots check out. I get this a lot but there is no fancy pen at play here that we use. :) Sorry hope that helps.

Have you thought about an acting career? I teach acting and I think you have a future as an actor. Not that your presentation is not perfect, but because it is, and I think that if you present a role in cinema, the excitement will be greater for everyone.

Thats just a generic capacitive stylus, nothing fancy :)
