there’s another part of this scene on top of the plain old PTSD that’s been boiling to the surface the whole film. He’s angry that he killed his fellow serviceman just to come back to a crap life. I think if he knew the circumstances he was coming back to he would have given his life to save his fellow marine in a heartbeat. The thought of his family, his wife and kids needing him, is what kept him going but upon return, he felt replaced and like an unwanted burden. I couldn’t imagine that pain.

You're on point, this scene was way too accurate to the mindset of constantly being let down after struggling with your mortality, horrific shit you've done and seen, sensitive but desensitised, feeling like you should have emotions, acting out those feelings but still being numb to them while they're happening. The way Tobey's character keeps losing it and freezing is beyond accurate to severe PTSD + extreme unfairness and cruelty. It gives you a unique perspective

My grandfather spent a year or two in Vietnam before he was honorably discharged. The timing of his leaving and beginning to have PTSD symptoms also coincided with schizophrenia emerging. The line “Im drowning Tommy” hits so hard after seeing the full movie. Sam once saved Tommy’s life after he fell into a lake. Sam saved his life, and now he’s pleading with his brother to save his. Anyone who’s been in those shoes before knows exactly how much it fucking sucks to be that.. lonely. Not because you feel like nobody cares, but because nobody could possibly hope to understand, and there’s nothing they can do to help. Makes you feel isolated, almost like you’re not even human like everyone else. I was a tye-dye shirt, hemp necklace wearing pothead hippie all about peace, love, and understanding four years earlier, and now a wretched creature with a black twisted heart. Once you experience the boiler room at such a young age that fuels the engine which keeps America running, all the curtains fall away to reveal the horror of the real world. This scene is to Iraq/Afghan vets as the opening D-Day scene in Saving Private Ryan is to WWII veterans… evoking absolute dread. So perfectly accurate that it’s very difficult to watch. Do not romanticize war, because it only robs you of yourself and everything good, beautiful, and pure you’re born with. This is why the military recruits the youth with promises of adventure, bravado, and money instead of with images of the reality of war… annihilation of the spirit, the festering of nihilism, broken minds with horrific images played on an unending loop, and the extinguishing of your inner-light.

I can only imagine the misery and pain this family is feeling. Sam is feeling a great pain based what he did and how he feels betrayed, but Grace is carrying a similar burden. She loves Sam but is afraid and terrified of him. Grace can’t fall in love with Tommy, but she trusts him. She feels safe and secured with him. Appreciates what Tommy does for her girls. That’s an internal battle that greatly challenges your integrity. Grace has a strong moral code where she stayed faithful to Sam despite the kiss she had with Tommy. Tommy became strong at the end where he finally became the brother that Sam needed.

Poor toby poured his heart out into acting in this movie and all he gets is spider-man references lol. Edit: thanks for the likes but some of yall think because of what I said I don't think the spider man films are good I'd like to preface that his version of spider-man is my favorite my comment wasn't throwing shade at it im simply stating that I feel bad because he's doing such a good job here and for it to just be downplayed into spiderman references.
