Tobii Eye Tracker 4C - Truckers Review

There are two types of tracking devices; head trackers and Eye Tracker 4C.
Today Im reviewing the Eye Tracker and I'll show you what you get, how you set it up and the pros and cons of using it compared to head trackers in general.
Eye Tracker 4C is a great tracking device with one big advantage over traditional head trackers. No gadget is required to be mounted on your head. This makes you look better but also eliminate the risk of running out of battery during sessions lasting longer than 5 hours. I’ve had my fair share of streams that’s been longer than that and it’s always a disappointment when that happens! Also, this device do not really care about the light situation. Some devices requires light, others require dim lights or become “possessed" if backlit. Eyetracker 4C handles any lighting situation without any problems. I’ve tested complete darkness and bright light and everything in between without running into any issues.

It wasn't until after releasing the video I realized that there's one more situation to consider.
If you have more then one game profile (you definitely do if you play both ETS2 and ATS) your tobii settings will not automatically be available on any of your other profiles! For me this isn't a problem since I also use a steering wheel. What does a steering wheel have to do with this???
Well, the tobii settings are saved in the same file as your steering wheel settings so Im used to copying the controls.sii file from my latest accessed profile to all my other profiles when needed. The controls file can also be copied between ETS2 and ATS as its not game specific! The file is found here: Documents/Euro (or American) Truck Simulator 2/profiles/[your profile]/controls.sii

Great video wombat as always you described what it's like for me making ets videos and streams perfectly I use a delan clip as my trackhat broke but as I play on triple screens I don't really need it I only use it so my viewers get to see the mirrors and keep forgetting to turn my head lol anyway I look forward to your next one thanks

Thank you Wombat. I am now totally happy with my headtracker and wouldn't change it for the world, but as you say it does take a lot of time(and in my case help😊) before you reach that stage. so if time and perseverance is an issue then the Tobii is well worth considering, It is however four or five times more expensive than my Delanclip.

I brought one of theres Wombat and after using it for over 6 months i ended up buying Track IR to use with ATS & ETS2 it all so supports all main racing games and it can fit on any size TV screen and PC monitor were you cant on Tobii plus the software interface is much easy to use in Track IR i wish i had not wasted £150 on Tobii

A balanced review thanks Wombat. There are a few trackers on the market and for me it comes down to equipment versatility and ease of use. I've tried one or two but always come back to my hat clip....

Face tracking do have its benefits but it’s sooo nice to be set free by eye tracking instead. No battery life to worry about

My Tobii is sitting in my closet back in its original box. After SCS did their promo stream, I went out and bought one. I spent days working on it, trying different profiles from all sorts of KZbinrs. I am not a streamer, but have gone back to my Trackir . I actually found Tobii fatiguing after a few hours of use. If you watch SCS live streams, I've hardly ever seen any of them using Tobii since that original stream. Warning for short guys like myself. You must have a clear line of site to the bottom of your monitor over the top of your steering wheel(if your using one). The Tobii cannot be placed anywhere except at the bottom of your monitor. Maybe one day I"ll have enough patience to try it again; but I'm old.........

I have not seen any fatiguing issues, not that Im entirely sure how that would manifest itself but Ive had nothing but consistent screen movements during my time with it so far. Maybe it was an issue in the beginning as I heard lots of people having issues with it after the first few releases of 1.35 but on latest version at least its been great

This video has got me closer to buying into this tech... Never really fancied having to wear a headset for head tracking. Question: how far from your face is the tracking device as you use it? I have my monitor quite close (eyes failing due to age 🙄) and I'm worried the tracking won't work properly. Thanks in advance - Andy

Nvidia GeForce. And that’s the important part. It’s a RTX 2080 TI which OC ensures I’ll see 60 FPS in most places but the image quality is not related to that card

My big problem with the Tobii eyetracker was the distance you need to sit next to the Tracker. All distances over 30 cm dosn't work.

Exactly right. I tried it sitting behind a wheel stand and steering wheel Tobii doesn't work at all.

Imho there are pros and cons with both trackIR and Tobii. If you already have a device and are happy with it, keep it. If you feel the battery life, light conditions required and precision of your current device doesn’t meet your requirements, I’d say go for it.

You should give Virtual Reality a try. It's complete immersion in the game. Of course, TMP refuses to support it and it's hard to do a live video but after playing in VR I just can't go back to a flat monitor.

A simple question! Can't you limit Tobii to just do HEADTRACKING, i.e. disable EYETRACKING? With FaceTrackerNoIR you can use facetracking through Visage! Nothing on your head then!

Well...as an ophthalmologist, I want to prevent - not only Wombat - but all users. Infrared are sending radiations : visible type or ultraviolet - can seriously damage lens and injure retinas, espacially at very close distances (From 50 to 90cm recommanded for Tobbi's Eyes Tracker ?!? Wow...) Prolonged uses with infrared can irreversibly injure your view, with known risks of partial or total blindness. What's Tobii's position about this point ? Even if, as I dare imagining, did Tobii's ask for serious medical tests about human eyes's sensitivity and capacity to assimilate infrared ? Or… to make their product efficiently working ? Is Tobii's company assuring each user with no risk, surely adviced by lawyers about Legal Framework's time exposure ? May Tobii clearly answer ? Infrared is NOT done to be fixed to eyes and I can just advice anyone to be really, really caring of his (only 2) eyes.
