People always seem to skip over the fact she liked a tweet making fun of Pinoe getting injured...I wouldn't want a teammate who's celebrates when her teammates get injured

Yeah that pretty clearly violates any team's code of conduct. Although I guess you could argue she was a U20 Nat team player at the time, but she was still playing for the crest so that doesn't persuade me all that much.

@@Steve-606 To make those comments about any athlete, teammate/opponent, active /retired, is innapropriate at best, and definitely deserved some time of penalty. If, hypothetically, NWSL's Naomi Girma applauded the injury of the WNBA's A'Ja Wilson, then that would be a problem as well.

i think it’s also important to note that korbin not only liked posts that were homophobic, she liked a post that was extremely hateful to megan rapinoe. it wasn’t simply her beliefs that she expressed, it was her hatred for lgbtq+, and specifically targeted at a previous national team player. it’s one thing to have beliefs… but this was hatred. Korbin should not be on this team.

Agreed. I like the way she thinks. Can you imagine when she comes back? But we have so many potential players that can score, some of these forwards have to move to the mid or defense. Even. You look at Croix Bethune and she's looking phenomenal too. Swanson, Smith, Shaw can all score. And right now you have Horan and Lavelle at the mid. Then consider how Yohannes played and even Macario. Gonna be tough to pick 23 for the next Cup. My hope is everyone stays healthy .Hayes has lots of talent.

I feel so represented by Tobin as a queer woman in a Christian family. She has helped me to validate myself and be comfortable on my own skin, and embrace my identity. It's because I'm a Christian that I wholeheartedly loved Megan Rapinoe's joke during the post-game presser of her last NWSL match. "Bad Karma," which Korbin Albert alluded to, is an anti-Biblical concept on its face. Megan Rapinoe didn't get injured for not (publicly) indentifying as a Christian, being queer, being anti-Trump, or being liberal. Megan Rapinoe got injured because Megan Rapinoe played soccer for 30+ years.

In terms of Korbin, I came to the opinion that she, like all of us, is a product of the environment in which she was raised, which in her case is far-right evangelical. What she fails to appreciate is, had she been born 40+ years ago, she would be lacing up her apron strings and not her boots. That progress wasn't accidental, it was made on the backs of couragous women, some of which were queer. This is an important lesson she should be made to realize. Secondly, we need to afford her some grace, time and space, to either grow from this, or choose not to. A motto I always fallback to is this..."I would rather a true enemy than a false friend". At the very least, knowing there is an enemy in the camp allows you to defend yourself and help them to see the err in their ways.
@transmatized
@transmatized 6 ай бұрын
we don’t need to afford her shit. the things she believes gets people killed every day full stop and she doesn’t seem to actually be sorry for anything she’s done. also, not everyone sees “the error of their ways” because they don’t think they are errors and a lot of people just don’t care.

From a sporting standpoint, I love all those discussions that are related to the sport that I love, but when it comes to something outside of that, I just try not to be hypocritical or lie, because with regard to the achievements that the national team did before that, it made the region in which I live give importance to women’s football, so that we can, within four years, achieve that. We are achieving what we have been unable to achieve for years, and this is largely due to the efforts of the US women’s soccer team, and I will remain grateful to you for the rest of my life.

One of the Brit fans posted a comment/question about Mia's goal that really resonated with me: "Who's Sam Kerr's stunt double?" My biggest question about the identity of the USWNT is how it approach changed under Vlatko, but also with the type of players emphasized. In the past, the US and other good teams like the UK, Netherlands, etc had strong inside players in the box: Abby wambach, Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Ellen White, Viv Mediema... Offenses revolved around an inside-out approach where scoring could occur more frequently wth crosses into the box to those high-scoring players. Under Vlatko, crosses were less emphasized and the identity of the team seemed to be more about outside-in style of player with the offense more so revolving around wingers trying to take on seemingly the entire defense. Instead of Tobin, Press, Rapinoe feeding Morgan/Lloyd more than looking to take on the world, NOW it seems like it is more about Rodman, Smith, Swanson, Macario trying to dribble through people to score. ..which means scoring has decreased and it is more about individual play ... scoring mainly seems to come from breakdowns versus real run of play. And I really wish people would do a real analysis of players rather than hedging because they are "friends".... sometimes it seems some key players are slow to pass, slow to get the feet off their ball, slow... and that leads to missed opportunities?

Korbin should NOT be given a free pass. THIS is the situation she must learn to grow to overcome. Either embrace or get lost. The team should not be forced to suffer through the second strike or the third strike. If you don't like DEI, you're out. I thank you both for speaking on this subject today because i've watched all the soccer shows and game broadcasters dance around uncomfortably avoiding speaking the f*ck out about it. And as a white, nearly 60-year old man who grew up wanting "to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony", this current obsession with division in America is absolutely killing our heart. It is very clearly NOT what our National Soccer Teams or our club leagues are about, and in the name of tough love, it should be met with zero tolerance (as a policy). Because even IF you can take our government and destroy our constitution, you cannot own our teams, our values, the liberty in our hearts. And guess what: You cannot win on the world stage without these values or the people who hold them dear. Christen can run for president in my opinion, which means Tobin you'd have to run too (lol). You both are total badasses. Thank you for expressing yourselves so fully! (you give me some dang hope). go USWNT, the pride of Americans (and countless other peoples!) everywhere!

When you lose, everything matters, because as a loser there must be reasons for the failure and every pendant has an obligation to voice his/her opinion, which opens up anything and everything, fact or fiction, major or miniscule. The community questions were an absolute highlight, and the discussion is such an important thing to talk about. The queer community has supported the team and the league from the beginning, and the team in return seemed to embrace that support. But what KA did crossed a line, and she should be dropped from the team for her post celebrating harm on an out queer player. Auctioning off her Pride signed jersey is just awful. The federation only seems happy to make money from the community, not actually support them with actions.

Growing up in the deep southern Appalachian mountains in the 1970-80's I understand how strong family views take to change, so when I read Korbin's family is very hard core far right, this is what she grew up indoctrinated in. We must be compassionate look at her age and give her time to learn there is a bigger world and she can hold opinions different from her families. Ball is still in her court but she is so very young we must be mindful we all have made giant blunders in youth and had to learn the hard way how we walk this journey.

I hadn't really thought about the fact that it was pretty much left to Lindsay and Alex to speak on a topic/slight etc that isn't US women national team but actually much bigger ie US women's soccer. I have been trying to give Korbin some grace because she is so young and really feel that had the organisation also apologised on her behalf and embraced the opportunity to restate inclusivity and respect, Korbin might not be receiving as much hate. Followers would inherently understand that she and the matter had been dealt with appropriately instead of being brushed over with the hope that it will go away. While players are pushing benchmarks regarding age and maturity when entering the arena, the people managing need to embrace the responsibility of helping these young people navigate the public aspects. It can't be assumed that all talented teens are coming with soccer skills as well as life skills. Christen and Tobin...you guys are old, wise souls too! Thanks you for an entertaining and insightful episode.

Watching the former team in all its queer power made me feel so happy and proud of myself in a scary world, and it feels like the new era will see that queer power removed from the team. It's one thing to accept all beliefs, its another to basically ignore the feelings of a whole community that supported this team and protect the bully player who hates that community above a huge part of the fanbase. It is very sad. I wish the former players still had power in this situation to uphold the values of the team.

You can see where Korbin's beliefs come from if you look where she's from, her family. With all the backlash she got all of sudden it's not gonna change. Plus, I don't think it needs to be escalated publicly because all that gonna be something for the far right to latch on.

My thoughts: I don’t care what she believes. However, I do care about the impact her actions (based on her beliefs or not) have. Those actions should have consequences; in this case they did not. Also, far right will latch on to anything when it comes to this team. A player could paint their toenails different colors and they’d complain about that.

Korbin Albert didn't just "repost homophobic pastors." She also applauded the injury of a then-active player, and a would-be teammate, had that player not retired. There's a bit more to her than just being anti-queer. Wishing for bad things to happen to others is indicative that the person could/would deliberately harm a fellow athlete.

Hello Tobin and Christen. In my primary and middle schools the majority of the kids were from a religion that was opposed to anything but straight married relationships. If players from that religion were picked on merit for US, they could be at risk of being attacked if they showed any support for the community view you discussed. Not picking such players, based on their views, could put US at odds with FIFA. It is possible to think it might put the idea of a US national team competing internationally in question. Not all the world has the attitudes we would now consider normal in English speaking countries. At the men's World Cup such things were already an issue. I did wonder if your community had considered this, since Korbin had, as you said, been a bit of a shock to what seemed like the norm? I had imagined that US appointed Emma Hayes to take the team past community issues and open the game to everybody equally, without any issue being considered except whether the player was the most likely to help US win. I envisaged her taking women's football into family oriented NFL supporting and to poor immigrant areas and getting kids into sport, who otherwise might feel that it was not open to all, because of assumed roles. I am not suggesting anything against what you said, just more on the lines of "Bend it Like Beckham". Alan's question about time of day seemed timely, since it is Midsummer and even here in northern England there are only a couple of hours of darkness. You could play in midnight sun in northern Norway. At the last men's Euros, a game in Glasgow went on very late, but it was still light. Interesting to see Mia too, as I have been watching the recent Chelsea videos, promoting their women's team.

Sorry but that is a very strange perspective. Players have always been picked for the USWNT based on skill. That has not changed. Nobody is refusing to pick players because they grew up in a homophobic community. That is insane. There is absolutely zero chance that the USWNT are going to be 'at odds with FIFA' because of it or somehow not permitted to compete internationally. If only people cared this much for the rights of gay players, instead of presenting a strangely passionate defence of a bigots right to bigot. Your comment also seems to be suggesting that it is somehow the fault of the gay community if players who show public support for them receive some kind of backlash. Funny how we're always to blame somehow. At any rate you cannot have a 'view' on whether gay people have the right to exist and be treated as human beings. That is hate speech and bigotry. Having an opinion is deciding what pizza topping you like, not dismissing a group of people because of something fundamental about their identity that they cannot change. Your comment seems to come from a place where bigots should have a right to abuse and wish harm and death upon people simply for being gay or somehow a team may be in breach of FIFA's policies. That's a great public example to set. Emma Hayes has not been appointed to 'take the team past community issues.' Hayes supports all those issues and has done so publicly. Every single sports team out there is involved in supporting social issues. That has been the case since organised sports began. You don't have to somehow pick between the sport and the advocacy, since they can all exist together. That is part of the platform of professional sports, as players have a duty to use their position to set a good example. That is why Hayes is such a great manager - she makes sure that people are picked on merit, but also will not tolerate bigotry and wants the same opportunity for everyone. It is fact anyway that the USWNT achieved their greatest success whilst they were fighting for their rights and supporting those of others. The two things are not mutually exclusive. Equally it is possible to both widen access to the game and target those from poorer backgrounds, whilst also making sure that gay players feel comfortable and welcome. The issue with the Qatar World Cup is irrelevant here, as women's football would never play a major tournament in an outdated place where a good number of their players would likely face the death penalty for something they did not choose and cannot change, not to mention the appalling record on women's rights. FIFA already wanted the Saudis to sponsor the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but had to back down when players and fans revolted. And by the way it isn't just 'English-speaking countries' where gay people have rights and are protected as such by the state or changing social norms. Thailand, for instance, just passed a bill to permit marriage for gay people. Korbin is still on the team. The issue with her is that she not only offended gay fans and players, but also liked a tweet celebrating an injury suffered by a fellow USWNT player, simply because that player is gay. In most organisations there would be some serious consequences for such public unprofessionalism. As a comparable example, imagine Hannah Hampton or similar liking a social media post laughing at Mia Fishel's injury because she is black. People would be appalled. It is the same principle here: you don't choose your sexuality, just as you don't choose your race. Team members should all be sticking together. If Korbin wants to be a bigot on her own time, then great, but when you wear the shirt you have to behave appropriately. Instead of the predictable fussing over the consequences for Korbin, perhaps we should consider the impact of her hurtful actions on gay players and fans. The women's football community has always been somewhere where gay people have felt especially welcome and accepted. Nobody is forcing her to be a part of it, but if she plans to continue playing she is going to have to find a way to co-exist with the kind of people that she has apparently been taught to hate. As anybody else would be expected to do so in any line of work. One thing is for sure, she will have alienated a lot of people who will now not have her back.

@@MartaComplex There is talk in the run up to the UK election of the potential for blasphemy laws to protect certain religions, which would mean their ideas would be protected by law. A teacher in a local school had death threats for showing pictures considered blasphemous and has had to go into hiding as he has seemingly no state protection. Not all countries have free speech laws. I used the English speakers as an example, as in eastern Europe, for example, there are political parties that do not have the same direction of travel as Thailand. There are still only a handful of openly gay male footballers. Next year all the WSL teams will be owned by the same Premier League clubs that have this apparent issue. In parts of the US ideas are accepted, but it seemed at odds with what was going on elsewhere and cannot be assumed to be a "done deal". Conversely, the major sports team where I have family is a Rugby League team that has games dedicated to Pride and campaigns for recognition of trans people, so it did seem to me to still be an issue in football, hence the view from a different perspective outside US.

That is a very strange interpretation of events. Hope Solo is responsible for her own actions and has done and said some terrible things. Instead of acknowledging that and apologising to fans and teammates, she lashed out at others and attempted to blame them for her poor decision-making. Nobody is responsible for Hope Solo's downfall other than herself. Her teammates certainly didn't force her to break the law or make embarrassing public statements with regard to the women's football community. Sad that you seem to have fallen under her spell.

I don't know why they've made this such a big issue about Korbin Albert. If you all, cannot see how narcissistic Rapinoe is then you're delusional. Here's why. She was selfish to participate in the last World Cup. She took a spot on the team, when physically she was not up for it. She then insults God when she's injured, offending Christians. In my opinion, she messed up her PK to throw the game. She needs incessant attention, and attacked Korbin to stay relevant. But I know others will disagree. But look at it carefully and how she performed. Her and Morgan took two spaces on the team especially with Andi Sullivan and they couldn't even come up with one goal between the three of them. They took up spaces where other players could have been playing at their positions. And they basically cost the US Women's National Team an opportunity to being a finalist. But everyone wants to hold onto the past and say they've been great. They were great, but not now. And Korbin Albert is the future. A player needed at the mid to help win us the next Cup. Hopefully, because everyone is all upset by her, there will also be Lily to turn to. But I don't think she should be punished for thinking differently.
