Absolutely stunning. VERY few singers can sing THIS well with such demanding staging and bodily positions. Dawn is extraordinary.

Is it not amazing that she can sing like that whilst doing such acting and in such positions? She must be wonderful to watch live...

Theodora, thrown in jail, and delivered to the Roman soldiery, sings of her distress, then her faith, for all the Yazidi, German, Italian, Tutsi or Huttu women raped in the world ... A moving, universal song that has passed through 270 years to move us ... Thank to the genius that was Handel, and also to Dawn Upshaw and his director, Peter Sellars.

Dawn Upshaw delivers this testing aria so well. Her voice, too, is so atuned to this particular piece. Many thanks "tobit2008" for posting it here on KZbin.

Elle rappelle souvent la voix de Mme Battle et à des airs de Céline Dion ! C'est une artiste complète que j'adore avec une voix intense et très émouvante.

Molto difficile cantare sdraiati, hai questi registi! Bella esecuzione con una voce aggraziata e adatta a Handel

36. Air Theodora With darkness deep, as is my woe, Hide me, ye shades of night; Your thickest veil around me throw, Conceal'd from human sight. Or come thou, death, thy victim save, Kindly embosom'd in the grave.

(38:Recitative - starts at about 5:50) But why art thou disquieted my soul? Hark! Heav'n invites thee in sweet rap'trous strains to join the ever-singing, ever loving choir of saints and angels in the courts above (39:Air - 6:27) Oh, that I on wings could rise Swiftly sailing through the skies, As skims the silver dove! That I might rest For ever blest, with harmony and love Oh, that I on wings ... [da capo]

@jkaise true, she isn't dying, but what a lovely way to die, singing like this before one's end.... beautiful...

This is the most brilliant thing I have ever seen... WOW Can anyone tell me what this aria is about? I'm singing it but don't really understanding what I'm singing about!!!

When it comes to arias Handel supercedes if not surpasses Mozart.Superb and devine.

No, she's absolutely not in the process of dying.

Dearest Lohengrin: "dreadful acting"??? Her reaction to death in a singing context is perfect. Your comment about her thighs: juvenile.
