I've been avoiding using paper patterns for 50+ years because they looked confusing & intimidating. You disproved that theory in this very informative & easy-to-understand tutorial. I just bought a McCalls scissor keeper/notions paper pattern. This 70+ year old intermediate beginner sewer is pretty psyched about it. Thank you !!!

Hello … I just started a sewing class , learning to sew clothes . I like your idea of making a carbon copy of the original pattern. This video is extremely well done and very helpful! You have a new subscriber… you are my virtual teacher from here on . I am not going to pick up all knowledge during my class time in person so your videos will be an excellent way to improve my skills . It is my hope build my wardrobe with pieces that are made by me …. I have always wanted to do this 30 years ago but raising a young family and working at a demanding career never allowed me any free time to do this. This is an old gal wanting to fulfill a long awaited goal and I am so excited I found a way to level up my new skill . Thank you very very much for a great tutorial and I shall be binge watching your channel. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

So I got my sewing machine a while back with a bunch of supplies and it has been just sitting there. Mostly because I couldn't find a good set of videos or tutorials that could walk me through how to do stuff apart from some basic "This is the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread it". A few of the ones I did were more targeted towards women (make this skirt, make this hand bag, etc.). Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for doing these videos. First, you are excellent at walking through each topic and explaining things in a way I can understand. Second, you are doing topics that I've been struggling to understand (such as how to read patterns to actually make things and the different types of stitching), and finally you are doing tutorials on EXACTLY things I want to learn (making button down shirts, tailoring shirts to fit better, and even dipping into cos play stuff). I'mg going to figure out a way to send you a bunch of money because your videos are helping me greatly to get to my goals and you were so nice to provide all this for free on KZbin. You sir are a hero!

Thanks to your video, patterns don't appear half as scary as they did before. You've made them much more accessible. The other thing I've often wondered is how do you deal with your size changing over the years should you want to reuse the pattern. The answer is so simple and obvious - use the tracing fabric so that you can make all the different sizes without chopping up the original pattern thereby losing the ability to make the larger sizes. Maybe this is what you're supposed to do with patterns as standard but I always see people chopping up the original pattern. Great tip, thanks Tock!

Great video! I iron light-weight fusible interfacing to the back of my pattern pieces rather than trace them. I find it strengthens them enough for multiple uses and I don't accidentally omit markings. I'm enjoying your videos.

I'm a first time follower and I've never tried to make clothing from a pattern, so I'm listening intently to your words. I'm about to buy a sewing machine and will attempt a simple dress (it is labelled easy). So far noted all you've said and will watch the next one to see how you assemble it all together.

Your videos are great! Sewing is a skill and you have taught yourself well. I have been sewing for 55 years and I was taught at home as well as in school (a skill that should still be offered). Might I suggest a hint for you and your viewers? I would suggest adding the pattern name and number to each piece (McCalls 2526) just in case someone isn't as well organized as yourself or if the project isn't sewn shortly after cutting. Thank you for your content, I love it.

Thank you so much Deb! I think I put the exact pattern in the description of the video so people can find it, but this is a great idea. That is a great idea to put the pattern number on each piece for sure though! Good recommendation! Hope you have a terrific weekend, thanks for watching :)

You should start by doing it badly. That's how everyone starts learning a new skill, anyway. Doing it perfectly will come with lots and lots of practice. I started by buying secondhand clothing at a thrift shop. Cutting the seams apart and putting them back together, by hand. Getting a sewing machine enable me to make mistakes much, much faster. Then came the day (last year) I successfully made a simple gathered skirt from a bedsheet.
