GET OUTTA HEEERE! 🤣 This IS AWESOME! I have a Brother SE625 and I didn't even KNOW it had a button foot stopper thing (you just called it, this lever), until you pointed it out! I bought my first machine on March 10th and this will be my first time sewing on buttons and button holes. After watching your video - I FEAR NOTHING!!!!! 😂

When I cut buttonholes, I place a pin parallel to the end-bartack on the inside of the hole as a stop to prevent me from accidentally cutting the thread. I've found that I get overconfident when I have multiple buttonholes to cut. As always, another great video - thank you.

That's a really smart idea! I'm probably going to start doing that from now on, its such a bad feeling when you cut too far. What's funny to me is that, you knew how to make and cut buttonholes... but you still watched this video! Thank you so much for the comment, hope you're having a terrific week!

I'm new to sewing. Oddly, I had a refurbished Brother machine tucked away. Someone gave it to me years ago. And, once this CV-19 struck, I decided to do something productive and make masks. My SO is an engineer, and he started to 3D print (donating & selling) face shields. I wanted to do my part; find something I could do while stuck indoors and thought of the sewing machine. Since then, I've managed to make some good beginner quality masks for our friends & neighbors & gave a few to our local maker space. Your videos have been EXTREMELY helpful to a beginner like me. They are very clear both visually and with explanations. Keep it up! Thank You!

I haven't really tried to sew since home economics at 15 and 16 until the last few years. It's insane how much you can forget. Finding this channel has been a lifesaver. I've learned more in 5 or 6 videos than the last 22 channels I've found. Everyone assumes your a pro or why would we be researching??! Well people like me is why that doesn't work. Thanks a ton for taking your time out to sew in detail and clarity. It's been a lifesaver. Now I just need a better sewing machine because the refurbished one I have is crap😩. (Lesson learned)

@@TockCustom thank you for your reply. BTW I love the shirts you wear and the background. Hilarious. Do you have a suggestion for a sewing machine to purchase? Mine is a brother at about a 250 price point has lots of features but I've done everything I can to try to work through the bird nest and spiral wrapping of thread on the post that hold threat and breaking. The tension will not stay put. I've done the "test" to check proper tension. I've checked the bobbin, taken advice from a million pros on it and it won't work. It's a refurbished machine. I am barrowing a Viking I think emerald 118. I love it. I got Google eyes over the epic 2 but whew at the price. Yours is sold out.

The only thing I would add is to look into using June Tailor Frey Block instead of the Frey Check. Frey check can dry to be hard and scratchy, not always nice especially on kid’s clothes. Frey block works just as well and does not get hard and scratchy. Mom would give you an A again💖

I've been testing my new ST150HDH by making masks for the vets in my community. It arrived just last week. Will also be making a better cover for my new machine, pillows, pants, and whatever I can think of to make sure everything works for the first 30 days. My previous Brother sewing machine (refurbished SQ9185) didn't do very well with the automatic buttonholes. But I learned to make beautiful buttonholes by hand while wishing for the 4-step buttonholes of the more simple models. Don't know when I will test buttonholes on this new machine. I'm in the middle of creating a garment that has a lot of buttonholes, but the style requires handmade, so more practice for me. I've been viewing many of your videos last couple weeks. You are popular in reviews - I still remember you as the guy with a lot of stickers on his machine. This machine hums so nicely compared to my old one that motored along. And feed dogs do their job better so I can sew in a straight line faster. Yippee! I appreciate the bits of your machine you shared, although your videos geared to any model. It gave me something (previews!) to look forward to when I had not received mine yet. It's a great machine so I am surprised at the lack of youtube tutorials.

Oh I hate when that happens. Usually thats a good time to change your needle and make sure your tension is set correctly. Since when you do buttonholes you'll end up sewing through more fabric and interfacing, it'll be different than sewing the other parts. Also it can be helpful to not let your machine go at maximum speed during buttonholes if you have issues. One other thing I though of. My first two machines were very cheap and did a terrible job at doing buttonholes, they always bunched up with thread. My newer/better machines are much more reliable.

I'm learning using your videos on a really old (but gorgeous) 1950s Brother - could a tight zig-zag in a small rectangle do the job for a button hole?
@TockCustom
@TockCustom 4 жыл бұрын
It totally can, but it will take lots of practice. I've done it, and its possible, but yeah... lots of mistakes until I got it right lol

The collar will be part of the shirt tutorial! I've already started filming, and it's not as complicated as you might think. I'll do my best to explain it very thoroughly when its finished :) Thanks again for all your support!

As usual, a great video. A tip for users of Brother machines (perhaps many others as well): Rather than holding your foot on the pedal for 1-step buttonhole making, just unplug the pedal and use the start/stop button like you do when you wind a bobbin. Then you can walk away and get your coffee from another room, and not just drink it if it's within reach. Also, for jackets and thick clothing that you're attaching buttons to, I have a similar foot that allows me to sew over a tiny finger which leaves slack when retracted. When doing that, I'll cut the tails extremely long, pull them through the button holes and wrap them around the stitches to hold the loose stitches together and make the button stand more firmly.

Yep, you can use the button if you unplug the machine for sure. Doing a buttonhole only takes about 10 seconds though, so it's no biggie either way. Thanks for the info on doing a machine automated shank button, I need to get that presser foot!

@@TockCustom It came with one of my older Brother machines. It seems that both my and your foot are called M. The old version had a steel clip that held the button to the foot, so you could lift the foot and keep the button aligned with the needle while adjusting the fabric under it, plus that clear sliding finger. Look for XE2643001. "Shank button", yeah. Thanks! I didn't know the term, but it makes perfect sense. I still remember the first time I did a 3-step button hole. That was a dreadful process, and my eyes almost popped out of my head when I first saw my machine do the 1-step. As for pulling the pedal, I've had the mental lapse of lifting my foot and screwing up the process, so I've gotten into that habit. I also will slide the speed selector to slow when I start a buttonhole and then slide it faster when I see it feeding correctly.

I've wondered about that for a while. neat! what about with older machines? how old of a machine can you get before it no longer works like that ?
@TockCustom
@TockCustom 4 жыл бұрын
If your machine has a Zig-Zag stitch, and you can set the stitch length to "Zero mm" it will be able to work - also you'll need to be able to adjust the width of the zig-zag as well. I'm pretty sure most machines can handle this, even older ones :) Great question!

How do you line them up evenly down the shirt or jacket

I'll show that part when I do the shirt video - but the pattern itself tells you where to put each button and button hole, so it's pretty easy :)

Which do I do first, the buttonhole or the button? Thanks

I usually do the button hole first so I can match up the button to the center of the hole. Hope that helps!

I am a recent new sewer I taught myself how to make face masks by watching hours and days of videos and now I really want to advance to something else that’s fairly simple as I have no sewing skills my question is what is the best user friendly machine you would suggest for a beginner that wants to advance but not have to buy new step up machines once I do advance Don’t laugh but I’m using a Remington 175 machine right now any machine suggestions are greatly appreciated ty

I'd recommend the Brother SE-600 or 625. Extremely reliable machine that will last years, great price, and has the ability to do 4x4" inch embroidery as well. Excellent machine to have fun learning on, and also produce great results at the same time. I've been using my for 5 years and still love it every day :)
