Always enjoy your videos Dino. Living here in Australia the safari tank is the way to go especially riding in the Aussie outback. I can travel over 700ks without seeing a soul so I even use a 20 litre fox collapsible fuel tank and strap it on the back.

Thank you for the comment, and I can absolutely see why this tank was created. I really like mine and often when I am riding locally I just fill it with 20 liters to keep weight down. Where I ride it is a bit bigger than it needs to be but there is no arguing that when it comes to build quality and fuel range, the safari is the king of the jungle. Thanks again Dino

Hey Dino. I enjoyed the video. I always look forward to your videos. I am a proud owner of a DR 650. It is not only a fun bike for me to ride but fun to modify to my personal needs. I have owned and ridden bikes my whole life. As a matter of fact a motorcycle is my primary transportation. Given all the bikes i have had the DR is one of the most satisfying machines i have ever owned. I have done a lot of changes and a lot of them i built in my shed as you did. Half the fun of owning this bike. I enjoyed watching every one of your videos. Keep up the great work when you have the time!

I appreciate your bike background story. I started at an early age with dirt bikes and motocross racing, and never got into the street bike scene when I was young. But I remember my friends in High School riding some of the bikes you mentioned, like the RD/RZ350's. I made my transition to street bikes in my early 20's after several years of no bikes at all. I stuck with pure street bikes in the Japanese Standard Motorcycle flavour. After covering most paved roads between Kingston and Barry's Bay, I started to get a hankering for riding gravel roads and some light off-road riding. So, I picked up a KLR 650 C model (check it out, the rare C model is a KLR that very much has a DR or XR design to it). I have a new love for riding again, searching for back roads around the Kingston area and north of here. Some of my riding buddies have even picked up adventure bikes too, to join in the back road adventuring. As far as modifications are concerned, I think the common ones we make are related to luggage capacity, LED lighting and riding comforts (GPS, comfy grips, seats or seat covers).

The KLR is a great bike and I think the c is my favorite model for the reasons you point out. I, like you found the back roads much more interesting and fun to ride with less concern for idiots ruining my ride. thanks for the comment Dino

I ride them because I love sticking it up my friends who spend $20k+ on an adventure bike's when I can do all that on a DR650 that cost a fraction of the price and is Bomb proof reliable not to mention as it's a lot lighter I can go more places they can and also cruise on the highway comfortably all day every day.

Hi Dino. Me again. The 70 year old NZ Brit bike rider. One thing I noticed when you discussed the case protectors is that your bike has no bash plate. If you have ever looked at any NZ ride videos you will notice we have lots of river crossings with hidden rocks. Bash plates are absolutely necessary. I have a plastic Acerbis one and can really recommend it. I notice Karl has a metal plate but the Acerbis one comes further around the engine and almost overlaps with the case protectors. I also have a cover on the oil filter and trialed all three protectors three weeks ago falling in gravel. All three plus my Acerbis tank identical to Karl's got scrapped up but protected the bike really well. Rider not so much. Another little upgrade which I found very helpful is a magnetic drain plug. Very useful in keeping an eye on the health of the engine

Hi Dino, another excellent video, love your work. I have a DR650 here in Australia. You must be one of the few owners with the original Suzuki hand guards. I guess you don’t do too much off road or drop your bike much, because they don’t protect the levers in a fall. Mine broke on my first drop. Here in Oz it’s pretty standard to instal Barkbusters. They are made in Oz like your tank. Look good and function well. No more worry about broken levers. Look forward to the next video.

Dino you do a great job of making things clear in your videos. I just bought a DR-650 and love it. I rode 2 strokes in the 70's then a harley in the 80's. Now at 68 Im getting back into riding. I love the big bore singles because they pull like a tractor. After watching your very well done video on the procycle carb rejet mine got rejeted and what a difference. On my dr650 , I have 6.6 gal gas tank. I noticed it handles better especially in the wind . Its a acerbis aftermarket tank.

Love my Safari tank! But I do live in Australia and when riding our remote tracks, you need every litre you can get. We find 15/44 is the sweet spot in terms of sprockets.

I've basically got Carl's setup sans the lowering. I'd go back to 705s, but I'm trying the Dunlop Trailmax to see how well they work. Upgraded the rear shock to the Cogent Mojave. Did the needle shim to get it to run slightly richer. Just added the Tusk pannier racks.

Hi Dino. Lovely garden and environment you have. Your introduction was amusing, with all your stuff, I was going to suggest you may need a bigger shed! I enjoy your videos. You speak kindly and explain topics and procedures very well. They somehow remind me of the good old TV shows I grew up with back in the 80s!. Now they were the days! Interestingly, my experience is similar to yours. Living in bush areas, I grew up with Suzuki TS trail bikes and I had a 85 Suzuki DR600 in my 20s. Intermission for several years with work, marriage and children. Got the itch a few years ago in my 50s and bought the current 18 DR650. I have done a number of modifications, Procycle seat also with a fake AirHawk cushion for long distance, Barrett Racks and Soft bags, B&B rear rack, mirror extenders, LED spot light and centre stand for changing tyres and servicing. I have the IMS 19L tank which makes the DR feel and handle the road like it was meant to and not be blown around the road with the 13 L stock tank. I do mostly solo dirt and bitumen road riding, exploring and camping from Blue Mountains, West of Sydney Australia. I’ve done a few 2-3 day trips but keen on longer trips as time allows. You’re right, the DR650 may not be the best touring bike, but it’s cheap, simple and reliable. I ride a bit slower like a grandad these days so the bike suits me and is a good compromise. I’ve installed Heidenau K60 Scout front and rear and they work well on tarmac and dirt. I’ve yet to purchase the Procycle Jet kit but will in the near future. Anyway, fun and interesting to see your mods you’ve made to your DR bush pig. Regards Craig

I have a 1991 DR 650 RS, with kickstarter. It’s bone stock and suits my needs. The carburetor starting acting up. The idle varies suddenly sometimes and if I don’t close the petcock and don’t burn the fuel out of the carburetor every time, the engine seems to get flooded and it starts with difficulty. Lately, the engine seems to get flooded even while riding and it loses power and bangs and spits flames like a dragon. Trying to get myself to order a Mikuni carb kit and renew it based on your videos. :)

I've ridden motorcycles most of my life, but have been away from them since 2015 when an accident on my 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere shattered my ankle in the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. But now I'm starting to get the itch to ride again, and I don't want a big bike anymore. I walk with the help of a cane and have a hard time holding big heavy bikes up. So I'm looking really hard at the Suzuki DR650. I learned a lot from your video, like the ability to lower the foot pegs, I'm 6'4" tall, so that would help a lot. I have a 2024 DR650 on order and a pile of parts waiting for it. When you switch to LED bulbs, make sure that the LED is the same color as the lens, otherwise you will just have bright white spots when the LED is on and defeats the purpose of switching to the LED's. Love your videos.

Dino, One of the best mods I did to my DR 650 is change the rear sprocket to a 43 tooth. Stock is a 42 tooth. Just a small change but for me I can run 40-45 mph in 5th gear. A lot less shifting and hunting the right gear. Cruises a lot better on the back roads. Keep up the great videos.

Well set up bikes Dino! Keep meaning to invest in some Rock straps. Like the mirror extensions, i have been looking at the double take mirrors for awhile but can't justify the cost i keep moving my arm when i need to see behind. Haha. Lowered pegs one of the best mods for most situations even though i am a shorty. Wow the plastic printed fairing looks promising! If it is strong enough, that is a great alternative! I bought mine with tons of mods already but I'm still adding. Ive had all sorts of bikes over the yrs, But I have severe back pain so the Dr is most comfortable. I thought about other adventure bikes but they are too heavy. I need something I can pick up if I drop it. I love the simplicity. I'm old school No wiz bang sensory rubbish. Simple I can fix. We rely too much on tech these days. When you are out in the bush You want to be able to get home. Well done Dino as usual. I'm looking fwd to your next vid.

I like the DR for the same reasons. Newer bikes are great, I just like the ability to repair the DR if I need to and limp home. The riding position is also very comfortable save for the seat of course. Thanks again for the comment Dino

Hey the first thing I did was to have the seat widened lol...then gold emulators and springs in the front...re jet and a set of Motoz tires...Rallz in the rear and the Dualventure tubeless in the front...I also added a similar rack and a 1 gallon rotopax which was 300 bucks cheaper than a new tank. Thats plenty of gas for where I run the trails and gravel up here in Bancroft. I also enjoy the "tinker"!

Bought a 2019 DR new after a 20 yr gap in riding. First bike was a new 1985 XL 350 when i was 19. Progressed to multiple 80's sportbikes before switching to snowmobiles and ATV's. Extensive mods to the DR the last five years and just bought a new Norden 901. Love the new bike, but I won't be getting rid of the " dinosaur" DR.

The seat is definitely the weak point of the ergonomics of the dr. I recently posted a video where I upgraded it to an inexpensive recover kit and it is working out well. You can find the video on ,y home page of KZbin. Dino

Glad you like the video and great question. I really don't ride trails as such, mostly gravel and unimproved roads so bark Busters are on the list but I have a few other upgrades to do before I install them. Hello Dino! Thank you for your incredibly useful videos. I'm the new owner of a '99 DR 650 SE. I don't have the bike running yet as it's been sitting for about 15 years. I've rebuilt the carb and brakes. I've got new filters, fluids, battery, and plugs. I definitely will change tyres and do valve clearances. All the obvious stuff. Is there anything you would recommend I add to my list before I get the tank back on and try to start her up? Greetings from Sweden - Nils Ps. If anyone else is in my situation here in Europe and have destroyed their timing plug / cover - kits for the DRZ 400 are a correct fit and are much cheaper and easier to find.

I am so glad you find the content useful. It sounds like you are doing a great job so far. While you have the tank off, I would check the air box air horns just to make sure nothing is shifted and check for any obvious loose hardware or wiring that is chafed or broken. I would also check to make sure the exhaust bolts are snug and not vibrated out. I will almost bet you've already done this by the sounds of your comment. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. Oh I loved the 2 strokes from the late 70s and 80s, me and all my buddy's rode them and just loved the ability to run with much larger 4 stroke bikes. Loved watching the 500gp bikes and the absolute unbridled power they laid down. I learned alot back then, jetting and tinkering with them. Great days. Thanks for the comment Dino

@@DinosTinkerShed I was in love with RZ350 but by the time I could afford one a GSX1100 seemed a more logical choice for what I wanted to do with it. I still lust after the RZ today. I can only imagine what the RZ and RG500s were like.

@@volvogt21 the RZ was the workhorse of ally friends and with pipes and jetting it was a great giant killer for sure. My friend Eric who produces The Lonely Overlander on You Tube had the most radical Rz of all of us. He had every non essential piece of the bike removed for weight savings and it was so lean that if you breathed it too hard near the carb it would pinch a cylinder lol. Fast little bikes for sure. I had the chance to ride both the RZ500 and the RG500 once or twice and both were unbelievably fast, the RG was incredible and all my friends and I still would love to own one now. Perhaps the most fun 2 stroke I owned was a YSR50 back in 1988, a few of us bought them, built them up and raced them at a large parking lot where we set up an informal track. With sticky tires you could rail those bikes like crazy and we all learned alot about cornering and body positioning. So fun, wish I could relive a few of those days. Dino

I follow and enjoy all of your videos. They have helped me....SO LET ME HELP YOU! CLEARWATER DARLA'S down on the fork tube and you will have the best Lights for your DR. I have been using them on my Dual sports for 15 years! Now as for the gas... I have opted for two One gallon fuel bladders. I bring them along and use depending on needs. This is much better option than carrying a huge tank all the time! When they are fueled, I put about 3/4 ( to 1 gallon again depending on needs) gallon in each. They are much more co-operative with strapping options. I mount them low, for better COG. Works like a champ !!!!

Hey Dino I asked you a question about my new Dr 650 riding with a cross wind gusts 20-25 mph. Front and rear tires are both sliding sideways. Ever had this problem? Road is dry and bike is new only 200 miles on it.

Thanks for the question, surprisingly its not. I was worried about that but after riding with both the stock tank and the Safari tank there is not really allot of difference unless you fill up the big tank which I only do when I'm on the road. The big one extends way below the stock tank, so if you only carry 15-20 liters of fuel the weight is actually lower than stock. weird eh? Dino

Recently bought a Gen 1 (1991 model) finding it worrying when I look for parts, and seeing the bad job prevoius owners have done on it. I opened to forks today and someone has put in 25cm x 5 mm thick steel pipe in there. I also have the Acerbis tank as an extra, but it doesn’t fit the frame mounts up front. I plan to make / extend the top tube frame mounts but just wondering if there are some mounts available out there

🇦🇺😎👍Hey mate I did the ultimate standard suspension mods with gold valves and fancy springs etc. MPE. Now the bike is so nimble and completely opposite to how it came out standard . The only way to improve the suspension past this point is change it. Spend the 💰and you won’t look back. I tried the pipe but it was shit…..2011 , 2016 & 2019 models 🏁

Hi Dino, another great video. Well I drove up to Campbell River today to check out a DR 650 and a DRZ 400, I have owned both in the past but it's been a few years. Just turned 75 and glad I went down there and sat on both, the 400 is really tall and I can flat foot sitting on the DR. So I think I am going to pull the pin on Monday and order a new DR (they have one in black in the back of the shop). I have a list of stuff I want to put on the bike but have a question about this PAIR system that is on the bike that can be removed to improve performance. Do you know anything about this system and did you remove it from your bike? Also any exhausts you would recommend for the DR, not to loud, the stock exhaust is so heavy and a great weight saver if you remove it. Hi Roscoe, thank you for the comment and questions. I hope your new DR650 works out for you. As to your questions I am afraid I am not going to be a s much help as others in the community for a few reasons. The first is that this is the only DR650 I have owned and its a 2009 which was not equipped with the PAIR system. From what I have read, removing it is not difficult or detrimental to the bike. I also have not planned on replacing my exhaust so I have not really looked into best options. Lastly this is the first dual sport I have owned (before this I was all sport bikes and when younger pure dirt bikes) so my experience is really only with a set of Kenda K761 and Shinko 705's both of which are more street oriented. My friend Karl uses Heidenau k60 scout's which are a bit more aggressive than what I have and he swears by them but overall I may not be the best source for answers here. When I am looking for feedback I will often post the question in the DRrider forum and you will receive lots of great answers, however as with all forums you will need to determine how well the responder matches up with your riding style and motorcycle build goals before you follow their advice. I wish I could be of more assistance and please feel free to ask questions, I will do my best to answer. Dino

The big Safari tanks are made in Australia. Its a big country. The Tanarmi Desert Road for example runs around 850 km without gas. So you need the volume. 😅
