I have to agree with you Roger on the preferences of growing media for Tolumnias. I tried potting them in bark chips....nothing. I tried potting in moss....barely survived. Too wet. Then when I mounted one on a small branch of tree limb....the tolumnia came alive and sprouted a spike. To me they acted like Goldie locks and the three bears beds. This ones too soft....you know the story. Happy spring!

Like most orchids, find their 'happy place' and they do well.

In a way you created the T-virys. But I fell in love with them since they are easier to grow and bloom under warmer conditions than my beloved Neo's. Love'em all!

That's quite the collection Roger! I'm assuming you have them mounted on cork bark? They're doing fabulous for you for sure. I had mine on pine bark and the first year they loved it, then all of them decided they were letting go and roots started dying, so I have them on lava rocks in pots but I really want them mounted.

I mainly use cork bark but I also have some English Oak bark that I collected from fallen trees in the forest.

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai that's interesting! I guess I'll have a go at collecting some of our native oak pieces, with attached bark. I do know that the stuff we buy is indigenous to Europe and NW Africa, but it's definitely worth the effort to try. Thanks

I have 20 some T...5 of which are now in flower...thinking of taking them to my orchid club show next week if they last? Not always easy to find yet but appear to do well...all of mine are over a year old or more....cherry little orchids!

Been putting off watching this one since it reminds me of the "Tolumnia Golden Sunset ‘Waiomao’" I slooollley killed when I was first starting orchids. I have never been able to find that one again. Thanks to channels like this, hopefully others wont suffer that fate. As Roger says "Plant them on NOT in" (that includes LECA even though it is "airy"). And a question... What happend to the plain old Tolumnia golden sunsets? All I seem to find these days are the jairak flyers, although nice they just don't seem to have the dramatic spotting I loved about the older golden sunset.

All the Tolumnias with 'Jairak' in their name originate from a large hybridiser in the far East (Thailand I believe). There is a French nursery that sells a lot of those so must import in large numbers. There was a UK grower/hybridiser many years ago but stopped selling around 5 years ago.

New to tolumnias. I'm not good with mounts. Killed the first but second I purchased in December is fine. It's in a small pot with clay balls and a touch of moss. On mounds, like you have, do you change, or put any new moss later on, like repotting? I live in Portland, Oregon (US) so similar weather even rain. No greenhouse, it's in my house on window sill. Thanks so much for the info in the video.

When I use a mount, I put the plant (roots) on the bare mount and then add some moss. This makes changing the moss easier. Normally, there is so little moss, I don't bother changing it but sometimes, the plant will need a bigger mount and have to be taken off and re-done.

Hi Roger- Thanks for admitting that it’s your fault we are all acquiring these little beauties! 😂 I’m up to 7 ...1 so far is scented. I’ve seen some real monsters for sale at some S. Florida orchid nurseries.

I saw some photos recently of Tolumnia growing in the wild (for the life of me, I can't remember where). What was interesting was the plants were growing on twigs quite close to the ground, maybe 6-10 inches/15-22 cm at most, sometimes with grasses growing around them. On the underside of the twigs, where the roots were, was dirt/sand.

Those are some nice mounts.i notice a lot of people are getting into mounts more and more. i have started consolidating my plants onto mounts but more then one plant per mount. The more the merrier i say.
