The Misguided Insight of Peter

You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23
Then Jesus went into parts of Caesarea Philippi. And he questioned his disciples, saying, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Jesus said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter responded by saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And in response, Jesus said to him: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven. And whatever you release on earth shall be released in heaven.” Then he instructed his disciples that they should tell no one that he is Jesus the Christ.
From that time, Jesus began to reveal to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and to suffer much from the elders, the scribes, and the leaders of the priests, and to be killed, and to rise again on the third day. And Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him, saying, “Lord, may it be far from you; this shall not happen to you.” And turning away, Jesus said to Peter: “Get behind me, Satan; you are an obstacle to me. For you are not behaving according to what is of God, but according to what is of men.”

Prayer: My suffering Lord, You faced the evil You endured with the utmost courage and love. You never gave in to fear but pressed on, fulfilling the Father’s will. Give me the grace I need to share in Your strength so as to overcome all that tempts me to fear. I love You, my Lord. May I rely upon You for all things. Jesus, I trust in You.

What a beautiful message! There is a line in your reflection that brings a hope to our lives that often goes unattended. "The truth is that any evil or suffering that you foresee has the greatest potential to bring forth the greatest good in your life. Our lives have been from the beginning been intertwined with the good things that bring us joy and the bad things that can remove that joy. In other words we develope an unjustified suspicion of what is good and what is bad. In today's gospel, we see fear develope in Peter when he perceives that Christ will suffer and be put to death. He is focused on the death of Christ and not on the resurrection. His perception is only on the loss of Christ and His presence to minister to His disciples. Anyone who has ever had a friend whom you have shared your life with without any boundaries, and lost that friend in death, can understand what Peter was going through. The meaning of a friend to our spiritual well-being, is priceless. The importance of our faith can never be understated. It is the rock of our foundation. With our faith, we can overcome anything that comes our way. We are so fortunate to have been the recipient of such a selfless sacrifice as Christ made for us! John 15:13 is the truth that brings understanding to the life of Christ, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends". We should never allow fear to weaken our faith. Proverbs 9:10 defines what our understanding of fear is, " The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy one is understanding ". This should be the goal of every Christian, to stand up for the truth and the understanding that goes along with it. We are not slaves to this world, but citizens of a Kingdom in which all are loved and valued by the living God! We were not brought into this world to just live and die! We were brought into this world to live and serve our living God through which we might obtain eternal life!🙏💖🕊🕊🕊
