The kindness in the advice for the farmer is heartfelt. I'm with John here, much better to sell the kit than get a banker in a shiny suit from New York walking down the driveway asking for the keys.

The call destroyed me. "This isn't what I do, it's who I am." As a liberal commie, I will say this is despicable. Our farmers deserve so much better. These are generational farmers who are struggling and our government, from right to left, has failed them!

The call with the farmer, it should be pointed out that he said in the beginning when he inherited the farm in 2015, it was unsustainable as his dad had it. He was given a failing project and he kept it alive for almost another decade. He did his best and should not feel shameful about failing to save a doomed farm. My heart still goes out to you Adam!

@John: "No one is responsible for that kind of thing happening"? YES! The owner of the Belgian Malinois IS responsible. Their dog jumped the fence, hence no control over the dog. Unless dog laws are different in the state that this happened the law in where I live is: "All dogs must be under control. This means that when your dog is not on your property, it must be under reasonable control of you or a handler. The best way to control your dog is with a leash. Remember, dogs are personal property."

When i got my new dog, i talked to my vet about it. His suggestion was, if you have any pets, make emergency fund for them of one major operation worth (about amount, you never know for sure, but it's much easier to find the extra)+ one year of what you would estimate their average yearly care bill would be as sinking fund. It takes time, but his experience with insurances was, that should your animal need even a small operation, they hike the monthly fee up a lot and you pay premium of same amount a year as the emergency operation when in most cases, your dogs will have 1 or 2 major problems in their whole life. I'm so sorry for both you and your neighbor. This is hard to go through.

As a veterinarian, I always recommend that a pet parent have either $15,000 in an emergency fund (per pet) or pet insurance. Sometimes, I recommend more if they have a pet that is known to need a lot of vet care throughout their life, like French bull dogs.

There are government programs to help farms in distress. I'm not saying it's a sure thing, but there is federal grant money to save farms available. Our family had to ask for help on a chicken house farm. It saved it. Call your local AG South bank, and your local congressmen.

Personally I do buy pet insurance. its around £12 a month( I live in England) and its worth the peace of mind. A colleague of mine had a dog that ate a sock! It cost over £4000 to have it surgically removed. The dog would have died without the surgery. As humans we have medical insurance so I don't see the difference in buying it for our pets. Unless you have savings to cover pet emergencies.

Belgian Malinois is like a fancy German Shepherd that’s more hyperactive… prayers up to the caller who lost their dog 😢… so sad. When our Sheltie got bladder cancer he was on chemo and treatments that made him very irritable. At the dog park an unleashed dog ran up to him and there was a growling match and some lunging btwn the 2… no injuries but it made us much more careful when out with our dogs. I can understand her apprehension ❤

I do not use credit cards anymore. But recently I was talking to someone about theirs and they made an argument I honestly didn’t have a rebuttal. “I was in Jamaca and the hurricane was coming the next day, we had to cancel our vacation and luckily found a flight out”. I said, well did you get a refund for your trip? He said “ I will. I used my credit card. Most credit cards have automatic travel insurance”. A) is this true ( I do believe I have heard this before b) do debit cards do this? Because now I’m kinda like… why pay for travel insurance if CC give it to ya free?

I had a 24k pet bill for my cat that got cancer. Fortunately, I have pet insurance. The reason I always carry pet insurance is because I never want to be in the position to have to say to my pet- I do not have the money to help you. That's something one would have to live with the rest of their life. Some people would find that very difficult. Just my thoughts.❤

Pet insurance, especially when you have multiple dogs, is a life saver. We have used it multiple times for small and large accidents and it has saved us thousands for only a few dollars a month. For example, my dog had a severe allergic reaction that ended up looking like an obstruction because of how inflamed his GI tract was. Ultrasounds, pain meds, and consultations later his bill was $6,000+. We paid $600. We fund emergency funds for deductibles and copays for their pet insurance but it’s necessary. I understand the perspective but you should definitely check the math.

Theres alot wrong with the lady from Fargo,ND. Her husband makes $ 45 an hour. Thats $1800 a week for 40hrs or $2475 for 50hrs. Take 20% taxes, medicare and social security thats $1440 net for 40hrs. 25% for taxes, medicare, a SS on the 50hrs and thats $1856 a week. $1440 for 49 weeks because he's off 3wks a year without pay comes to $70,560 and $90,944 for 50hrs a week. If shes able to budget $300 a week for savings which is $14,700 then there is no reason they should be struggling. Something else is going on and they never go into the details of it. $14,700 should certainly cover those 3wks he's without work during the year.

Worst advice ever for the 1st caller. John you have no idea what his finances look like. What if hes so upside down on his bills he can't afford to move there. Show him first steps first. Clear your debt and then move. You'll never be happy if you're so under water, drowning in debt you can live. He's been there he knows that. Sounds to me that's why he can't pull the trigger.

home insurance is about as fringe as pet insurance for how often a freak accident actually happens that they cover and car insurance wouldn't cost nearly what It does if not for ridiculously high prices of healthcare

let me see if I understand this. A man calls in who's unhappy because of the state that he is in and wants to move. He might make less money but that's OK because this is the right thing to do. Dave would have said you know maybe you can make more. But John asks if he grew up without a lot of money. every decision does not come because of your childhood. His decision came because he and his wife are not happy with the schools, the politics, and the cost of living. Even if he had grown up wealthy, I think he would feel the same way. i'm finished. I am no longer listening to John or George. George is a snob. Ken is great when he talks about jobs and I don't think I've ever heard better advice from anyone about finding a job and everything else that's involved with working. Dave of course is the bomb and I love Rachel because she's Dave. Jade is fine except she keeps interrupting with her little yeses and nos and uhuhs which is distracting but she gives good advice. This man did not need counseling.

You don’t understand this so let me break it down for you. Dr. John asked him because he views his worth through money, he doesn’t see that he has innate value just because. That’s what Dr. John was trying to convey to him. That there is so much more worth he has. Mike is a dad, and husband but he clings so tight in to this money because that’s where he got his worth and achievement from as a kid. You heard Dr. John nailed it on the head to. He didn’t grow up with money and so now he’s chasing it. What you see is the surface level, and John as the trained counselor sees WAY deeper!

Be a responsible adult, stick to a written budget, use credit cards for all expenses and get 2-5 percent cash back, pay off the balance weekly, never pay a dime of interest, and invest all the cash back. Assuming $40 a month in rewards, invested over 30 years at a conservative (according to dave) 10% return, thats just over 90k sitting in an account from literally free money. Assuming daves 12% return that he always talks about, that would total out to 140k

I would never not have pet insurance. It is not just about freak accidents. Pets also get sick and yes have accidents like humans. I know people that have had to foot bills of over 20k for their pets. Because of the breed being prone to bad hips or bad teeth. Pet insurance is worth every penny.
