The Department of Labor reported 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs in August while 10.5 million jobs remained open in the same month. Economists point to a number of factors, including a reassessment during the pandemic by Americans who want more from their work. NBC’s senior business correspondent Stephanie Ruhle reports in this week’s Sunday Focus.

Why is no one protesting the outrageous housing market. The main reason minimum wage isn’t livable is because the housing market is through the roof. Houses and apartments are more expensive than they’re even worth.

I agree. Either lower the cost of living or increase pay, but something has to happen. People should not have to work 2 or 3 jobs to pay their bills.

The elites and big banks are buying up all the properties and sending prices up because they easily out bid common people. and their doing it at such a high rate that sellers know this and that they can get more....so its a market trend that is causing the rise in cost. Why would banks and elite be buying up so much realty??? Its part of the agenda for "the great reset". We will own nothing and be happy they say. Banks usually hate holding onto homes. They are not in the realty or rental business. But there's a new agenda..... & This is them taking over the housing market so they can redistribute & reconstruct it their way. Just look up why the worlds biggest shadow bank, "Black Rock Banking System is buying up realty".

I was unaware. My wife's company requires her to sign an employment contract, which basically states that anyone can be fired for taking a sick day (after the 3 they give you), no matter how sick you may be (hard to believe I know, but that is what it says). I personally don't want my sick coworkers coming in and infecting me, but this contract will certainly push that circumstance. Looked into it, and in the state of Georgia it is perfectly legal (and VERY common). Previously, I though unions had played an important role in the past, but may not be necessary in today's market. I've changed my mind on that. Employers routinely push policies that show a blatent disregard for employees well being. I guess greed is the underlying driver on this; I honestly don't understand it. But its very real

It was my understanding that the new business model does not prefer loyal workers that intend on staying put in their jobs. The new model is the "revolving door" of hiring new employees, using them while they are eager, then getting rid of them before it comes time for their raise. I don't see why any worker would tolerate that business model and there is backlash to that business model. No one cares about their jobs or the consequences of doing subpar work. Why should they? There is no future for them. Plan your future settling up your Rot IRA and getting funds sent to it through *Credit Backdoors*

The boss made the announcement to everyone in the break room, no one gets a raise unless you are vaccinated. 6 major employees walked out, leaving two employees to fill orders. They now have a sign in the window that says NOW HIRING. Those 6 people that walked out are laughing. It's been almost 2 months. They haven't hired anyone yet. Those 6 people who walked out have jobs elsewhere that don't require you to be vaccinated. That's funny

Too many opinionated people in the comments are blaming lazy young people for this problem. They lack critical thinking and have no knowledge on how bad the situation is and that it affects everyone. Since 1980 wages have no kept up with the cost of housing, schooling, healthcare and other essentials. Good paying jobs cant even buy you a house in most major cities. Instead of seeing that wages cant pay for the cost of living in a lot of the country, workers are being called lazy and stupid for not moving and working longer hours! Its a nationwide problem, not everyone can move!

It doesn’t matter what causes the crash but there seems to be a pattern every 7-10 years of a market crash. Personally I think the pandemic wasn’t our crash but it accelerated the impending crash which we are priming ourselves for a worse crash than 2008 which our same indicators were shown in 2006.

After he received the expanded benefits, he got a letter that his employer didn't let him go for the pandemic--they'd fired him. He was never told! He was expected to pay back the money--which had allowed him to rent an apartment and survive his unemployment. He fought it in court, and the court sided with him. But the former employer wouldn't let it go, and continued to insist he wasn't entitled to the benefits. If I could remember their name I would gladly shame them here. All these places are hiring too many people have huge turnovers because not much pay and they don't want to give each employee but maybe 15 to 20 hours a week....no one can survive and pay just living expenses on that and are forced to get 2 or 3 part time jobs and try to get each one to juggle the hours among them and then they want to give you a hard time about that as well. It's a disgrace how these big companies are treating employees.

That was the situation at my first job at major retail store. Once I hit 32 hrs, I wasn't allowed to work for the rest of the week. I Later found out it had something to do with them avoiding benefits and healthcare. Ridiculous.

@@Scorpio-- They are not "avoiding" benefits and healthcare... They are avoiding costs that, if incurred, would put them out of business. So some companies are trying to raise prices. That works for a while... until the people now getting more pay (with benefits) see that the prices of everything are now higher, and they are right back where they started. Let's talk about the benefits for a moment... You want to make healthcare affordable? GET RID OF INSURANCE COMPLETELY. If there was no insurance, no one would be able to afford healthcare under the current prices and the healthcare providers would have no choice but to lower prices to a level that everyone could afford - and then everyone could afford it. It's really simple. Of course, no one understands that.

2020 enabled something that government and business don’t like...time to think. People had time to think about their lives. They had time to think about what is considered “essential” work and workers. They had time to watch the stock market rally and government wringing their hands as they agonized and bickered amongst themselves when trying to decide whether to give a few measly hundred dollars to help people during a pandemic. People had the chance to see government work to preserve the status quo for businesses and the wealthy. Many people are taking the jump to work for themselves. Good for them! I’m excited that people are taking their destiny into their own hands. After all, isn’t that the American way?

Look at what's happening with human infrastructure bill that most Americans want but the politicians are pursuing their own agendas before passing it. The federal government has become a farce. One party won't do anything, the other party wants one to rule it all and we can't trust our justice system to be neutral. Even then once voters pass a bill, the politicians can over ride those who both signed the petition to get it on the ballot and voted for it. Our miserable republicans took it over and altering it for their personal pursuits. Cannabis has been legal for almost a year and it's still being held up in our state for purchase and it's no longer the bill that was voted on initially. That means no one politician wants to do anything about this capitalist structure. Everyone needs to quit! People get so passionate about a political candidate and all it does is make us fight each other. We dont have the luxury to fight each other anymore. Whether youre a democrat or republican, vaccinated or unvaccinated we have never won anything. All we get is useless degrees, homeless veterans, underpaid workers and these are just words to these wealthy politicians. At that point why would anyone work in any college degree field. Now even if you slashed a CEO's few million dollar salary, the average worker would not see a cent. No it’s because people these days don’t want to actually have to work for something. They want to walk in off the street and make $100,000 with free benefits and 20 weeks of vacation. They work at a job for 6 months and when the company doesn’t bronze their shoes every day they come in they have a millennial meltdown and quit. Kind of hard to build a resume with constant job jumping. Then these companies give these people what they are demanding and it’s still not good enough because they feel they should be the CEO of the company within months. They feel they are entitled to everything but not putting in the time.

@@carolinatarheels7903 in my minimum wage experience you have to overwork and do doubles non stop and basically have no life besides work and still only be able to afford a single bedroom rental and car insurance effectively being stuck in a limbo most people never make it out of. Most people don't enjoy that

@@gofys123 I have worked since I was 14 non stop and I have only had 4 jobs in 28 years. You don't make minimum wage by staying at a job a long time. I didn't get to the position I am in now the second they hired me, it took many years and even 4 years of third shift and weekends also missing my friends and family and making sacrifices because I knew it would pay off by sticking with it.

These numbers though reflect all those who lost their job because they wouldn't comply with mandates. Those employees are classified as quitting, not fired- it's how they prevent them from collecting unemployment for their petulance.

I am a hard worker, and was saying this 10 years ago, and I agree with this. The nation needs a standard full time shift from 5 days a week to 4 days a week. Full time should be 34 - 36 hours instead of 40 hours. Go down to 4 days/8.5 or 9 hours per day, and give people 3 days a week off. It would also have a big impact on vehicle emissions and decrease overall traffic everywhere.

@ghost mall It is more that even with a job people are falling behind and are losing the ability to keep a roof or pay bills. Many are debt and in the long run it is not if they will lose housing or get their utilities turned off but when. Why work if you are going to be cold, hungry and homeless anyway. Throughout history when it becomes apparent that people can't meet their basic needs they will either quit or revolt.
