My current theories on this topic: -you can eat a sausage out of the package while the rest are cooking (eg: give one to your pet as a treat, etc) something as a kid I have participated in -not everyone wants the bun (eg: picky eaters) -you can lose one to gravity and not have spare buns (buns are unlikely to suffer from this event)

Well, now that I know the industry will not change because we are not complaining enough, I suggest we start a movement to make the bread and meat ratios equal, refusing to buy the larger bun packs, or buying them and then just throwing the extras upon the ground to feed the pigeons. When confronted with herds of extra large pigeons who cannot fly due to their weight, and the extra large pigeon droppings causing a slipping hazard; the industry, thanks to government enforced safety regulations, will then be forced to change the bun package to equal the dog packages, or vice versa. Problem solved.

As an american baker I can give a reason as to why buns are sold in packs of eight. When making hot dog buns and brat buns, we make 3 rows of 8 for hot dogs and 3 rows of 6 for brats, because that's how many will fit on a full size sheet tray. Bakeries are usually very busy so when we look, at a glance, and see rows of 6 or 8 we know whether they are hot dog buns or brat buns.

This has never been an issue, just a meme question. Hot dogs are sold in all kinds of different package sizes depending on what you choose to purchase and the same goes for buns. Lots of people eat hotdogs without buns, cut up in mac & cheese, etc. Lots of people eat hot dog buns with other foods. Brats, tuna salad, etc. This just isn't a problem and I've never understood why anyone even talks about it. I'd argue, in fact, that your typical household would still end up with leftover hotdogs or buns just as often if they were both sold in pack sizes of 8.
@jasoncrobar7244 жыл бұрын
In Canada, regular hot dogs are in packs of 12 (still about a pound, 450g) and the buns are in 8-packs. Two packs of dogs & 3 packs of buns balances out. It would be nice of supermarkets to offer sale prices on those multiples at the same time, but I've never seen it happen. Jumbo hot dogs in packs of 8 (still 450g) are common, and make a perfect solution to the problem. And now I'm hungry...

I bought Lightlife vegan hot dogs, and there were 8 of them, just like the pack of buns. I didn't think they were all that great, but the fact that they matched in quantity was so satisfying.

I know a guy who has 3 nipples lol!
@foodank_atr8173 жыл бұрын
Men have nipples because during the embryonic stage the zygote begins as double x chromosome (female) then determination processes in the DNA either leave it (the baby is female) or changes it to xy chromosome (male) so all men started by default as girls until their DNA in the building phase said "no this is a male", hence the nipples.

Around here they sell hot dog buns in packs of 6 or 12 while hot dogs come in packs of 8, 16 or 32. You used to be able to buy hot dogs by the gram in grocery stores that had an in-store butcher but nobody does that anymore but the high-end specialty meat shops. :(

In a lot of supermarkets in Australia, you can buy as few or as many hot dogs as you want from the deli section of the supermarket. Problem solved! Also the buns generally come in packs of 6 here unless you go to a bakery, where you can generally buy as many or as few buns as you want.

This actually goes with 12 packs of mountain dew vs mountain dew mini cans. Those tiny cans cost nearly 3-4 times more per ounce vs the larger cans in the 12 packs. Most people see that the little cans are "cheaper" up front vs 12 packs, so they go for the little cans. Even if they just paid way more per ounce.

In Southern Africa, we usually buy buns by number. You go to the bakery counter and ask for x amount of whatever bun you want and they put it in a paper bag & price it for you.

In Canada they match. Most hot dog packages here have 12 sausages and the traditional bun package contains 12 buns. You can buy packs of 8 jumbo dogs and packs of 8 buns. Never had an issue in my life.

I have not seen anything other than 8 packs of hot dogs in years. Only exceptions to that are very large or long hot dogs which can come in smaller or larger packs respectively. Right now I have about 6 packs of hot dogs(nitrate free) from 3 different companies in the freezer and all are 8 packs.

I usually by my hotdogs in bulk. With the large number of food vacuum equipment out there for use in the home, it makes more sense to buy in bulk. I own a FoodSaver food vacuum, and it was one of the best investments I ever made. You just buy your meat in bulk, then break it down into the sizes you know you're likely to use most, and vacuum seal it. If you do it right, it can last in the freezer for well past a year. In the long run, you can save huge amounts of money, and, if you buy alot all at once, (like enough to completely fill your freezer), you only have to deal with it one time and you're not stuck running to the store every week to buy over priced meat.

Bulletproof Monk is a fucking great movie, and the answer is: The reason hot dogs come in packages of 10, and the buns in packs of 8 is because sometimes life doesn't go as planned, so be happy with what you've got, 'cause you can always get a hot dog

I know of something that's sort of similar in the middle ages, although not quite the same: There was sort of an improvised traveller's or hunter's food that was made by grilling a strip of meat, then putting not yet heated bread dough around and heating it over the bonfire until the bread is sort of okay ish to eat, although generally inferior to proper bread. This would not be bread that was given much time to swell, as they didn't carry bread with them because it ruins with time, just flour and a miniscule amount of yeast. Generally it would be the correct size to fit in the mouth, in however long sections were required for one to be a meal, with the amount of meat in the middle varying from just a minimally thin layer of bread around to almost no meat in the middle at all depending on how hunting went. It was believed to make the meat last longer before being spoiled, although I don't know if it really did.

I think some marketing dept. at either Big Meat Co. or Big Bread Co. crunched the numbers and decided the packaging discrepancy resulted in a few more cents of profit per month so the practice became SOP. Where I live we have standard hot dogs in packs of 10, jumbo hot dogs in packs of 8, standard buns in 8’s and jumbo buns 6’s. Since the Jumbo dogs and buns are more recent products and the packaging discrepancy persists, it seems intentional.

The problem is much less so here in Canada I find; Plenty of hot dog packs vary from 6 to 12, or even 18+ I've seen. As for hot dog buns, they're generally in packs of 12 through and through, and I can say most hot dog packs range between 8 and 12.

As for the origins of the hot dog, we invented them in ancient Egypt, every Friday was Hot croc day and we made sausages with onions served on bread for all the guys and gals building the pyramids. It was great fun and ancient Egyptian beer was better than any modern beer.
