Is it possible for you to do a follow-up video on this? I'm interested in finding out as to why Diamonds and Pearls are often paired together. The only other gems that i know of that come in a standard pair are Rubies and Sapphires because they are nearly identical. I did a quick search but what i found was split between Pokémon and advertising.

What cracks me up is how all people are acting smart because they now won't pay for "artificially bloated value diamonds", while still constantly falling for the exact same trick. Diamonds aren't the only thing that's sold for much more than it's worth. Most luxury items are sold this way. Many non-luxury items are sold this way too.

@@cameronmyers2154 Diamonds are more useful than a cell phone. Because there are alternatives to cell phones. There is no alternative to diamonds. You forget the MASSIVE impact it has had on tooling. Everything you use, including your food and water, can be traced back to a diamond saw in some way or another. Without diamonds, many products we use would be far too expensive (or of a much lower quality) for most consumers. And that is just one commercial use for them. Diamonds are more than just pretty rocks.

Interesting diamond story: Kimberlite, a type of rock usually sitting on top of diamond deposits, was found in northern Canada. De Beers rushed agents to Canada to secure the rights to the land where the Kimberlite was found. However, a Canadian company purchased the rights to land situated to the north of the find. This is because glaciation, something that doesn't happen in South Africa, would have pushed the Kimberlite to the south of its original location. De Beers, digging straight down, found no diamonds but the Canadian company did.

Small diamonds in the rough for industrial applications are far cheaper though. Actually working the diamond into a regular shape adds to its value tremendously, and the price goes up exponentially with the size, ie a dozen very small diamonds cost far less than a single large one with the same total carat. Which is why diamonds are used in power tools and they're not that expensive.

My mother worked for a jeweler about twenty years ago, and to this day will still try to discredit man-made stones as somehow being fake or deceptive. In trying to convince customers that the more expensive natural diamonds were somehow preferable, she convinced herself too. I'm surprised more commenters aren't mentioning moissanite as an alternative to traditional diamonds. It's a pretty fascinating stone, with a cool history -- not to mention it's superior to a diamond in almost every way, for a fraction of the cost. For anyone looking for an engagement ring or other sparkly gift, look for moissanite jewelry. It's been around for quite a while, but most jewelers like Jared's or Kay don't carry it, because it competes with the much more profitable diamond. Etsy sellers and independent jewelers are a much better bet for quality moissanite jewelry. Plus, it's always nice to buy something from an independent craftsman than a massive corporation.

As I understand it the purpose of a real diamond vs fake is real diamonds are all unique due to the natural impurities. Thus you give a real diamond to someone you love because it is unique in the world just as they are. If I could not afford a real diamond I would simply give a ring with a different real stone but never a manufactured stone or cubic zirconia.

Thirty-one years ago, my then wife won a diamond ring at a department store jewelers. The ring retailed for $500. Maybe a year later, we had it appraised. The new jeweler said it was worthless, but he'd buy the band itself for $10 (and remove the diamonds and give them to us.) This started a conversation where he explained in detail why the diamonds in the ring were worthless and used a microscope as part of his "lecture." It was interesting.

When we got married, I got a beautiful ring with an aquamarine center surrounded by white sapphires. It is simple, attractive, and it cost us next to nothing. I just wish more couples were comfortable taking the more practical approach to engagement. Seriously, save the money because nobody is going to notice or care what your ring looks like.

Not true. White sapphires don't refract light even a fraction of what diamond does. It looks like garbage (sorry to dis your ring). Also, aquamarines are not great for daily wear. A diamond can look the same for another million years. Your stone won't last 20 years and still look the same as when you bought it. You are correct that no one else cares what your ring looks like. Unless you work in certain fields or with high salary clients.

haha sell your diamons elsewhere, you choose the wrong place here xD we all know Moissianite is the better Diamond and Zirconia(CZ) is also an option, they are 100x/1000x cheaper and the fire is even better. If you have money to burn you have too much, there are always better things to invest in. Its totally unreasonable to bring up 1 million years since a human can only wear a diamond max 100 years. wishbone346 that's not why. There are other reasons. You are just hiding behind this excuse. If I had to guess I would think you are cheap. Or perhaps you don't feel like any woman is worth getting it for. Although a diamond does not show love itself, the fact that you would go out and spend the money on it because it means so much to her despite the fact that you think it's a rip off is what shows the love and that you are willing to go along with social norms even though you don't believe in them and are willing to fulfill her dreams is what shows the love. Maybe one day you will meet a woman so fabulous that you would make the sacrifice. I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do.
@wishbone346

Katie Kat Lol you know nothing about me, sweet heart, so don't go making assumptions. I'd buy someone I love a ring, just not a diamond that is worthless and represents everything wrong with capitalism. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, or even just pure gold are all far more valuable, and I'd have no problem buying them. What's more if a woman is dumb enough to "dream" of getting a diamond and refuses to change her mind even after seeing how worthless they are then she can hit the bricks. I've got no interest in someone that superficial. Hell, if she measures love based on any gift I give her she's not worth my time. I'll give someone a gift because I love them, not because they expect it based on social "norms." "I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do." The WILLINGNESS to ignore logic and do something to make her happy. So for that YES you could lose a good mate over not "proving" how much you love them. But me personally I think women forcing men to waste money to show love is ridiculous. And Josip, you often need to give a female a ring to show her and society you aren't just F-ing around but really want to spend your life with her (you can thank the immature men out there that "don't know what they want" for forcing a ring as the deciding factor).

Value has two components: What it's worth to the buyer, and what it's worth to the seller. If you, as the buyer, believe a specific diamond to be worth a certain amount, you're partially correct. The seller also has to agree to that number. The moment you decide that any given thing is worth less than the asking price, than - in your case -that thing is without value to you. If enough people feel that way, the demand for that thing will drop. When demand drops, so does the market value. Since demand for diamonds is steady, they have a much higher value than you may specifically be willing to pay. As such, they're worth a LOT to those that own the market as well as to consumers willing to buy them. To you, they're worth shit. And yes, if you try to resell a diamond, you'll find that there's a big difference between the value of a "new" diamond from a diamond retailer and a "used" diamond from an individual reseller. Why? Because DeBeers convinced the market that only "new" diamonds have value. They did this by connecting a diamond purchase with perceived "love". Personally, to you and I and many others here, a diamond is worth less than shit. To the market, it's worth far more. This is what happens when a monopoly is able to control the supply of what would otherwise be a commodity.

I never wanted a diamond for many reasons. When my hubs proposed to me he gave me a very cute man made emerald ring. The reaction from quite a few women was shocking, like I had been cheated out of a big diamond I never wanted. Reactions are pretty different since I switched to the huge Russian alexandrite ring I inherited from my Mom. I did wind up with man made diamonds on my wedding bands because it was hard to find a band that worked around a large stone. I love the continuity of wearing the ring my Mom wore everyday and that it's unique.

OF course, synthetic diamonds ( as well as other gemstones) have been around for awhile now, they're better quality and they have to add a florescent chemical to them so they glow in UV light to distinguish them from the real thing. Diamonds are made in volcanoes and there are volcanoes all over.....even on other planets, so they are quite common.

There is no fluorescent chemical added to synthetic diamonds, nor is it true that natural diamonds have no fluorescence (about 20% do), or that they are "made in volcanoes". When my Mum died in 2014 we had her 1ct. Canadian mined diamond ring appraised for estate purposes. My dad paid over $10,000 for that ring when he bought it. It's kinda a romantic story, when they were young he could only afford a cheap diamond ring. He wanted to surprise Mum with a big diamond for their 30th anniversary. Every month he secretly went to the jewellery store and made a payment. It took him two years to pay for it. He missed the 30th anniversary but gave it to her on Christmas day (her birthday) She loved it. A few years after she developed cancer. Any way, we were shocked to find out it only had a resale value of $2000 AT BEST! Most of that value was in the platinum setting. We never intended on selling it. We never told my Dad about the appraisal either. He now wears that ring on a chain around his neck as a symbol of his love for our Mum. In that sense it's priceless!

Ah the diamond trade... keeping slavery alive and well into the 21st century, and yet people actually want them for some strange reason. Also there's de Beers being a cartel, which is what turned me off to them as a kid, finding out about the children enslaved to mine them or fight wars over them just cemented it for me.

so diamonds are effectively worthless since there are so many of them out there

The diamond cartel releases a small amount of diamonds each year to keep the prices up. But as soon as you buy a diamond, its resale value drops by about 90%. They're useless.

all of this, plus all the human rights concerns re: diamond production (even "certified" ethical ones are really hard to verify), had me decided against diamonds years ago. I mean, I'm not too keen on the idea of my partner spending thousands on something for me without 1) talking to me about it first, and 2) me at least contributing to the expense - that kind of money should go to something for us, our relationship, and our future life, rather than a piece of jewellery... besides, I'll most likely be working in a hospital setting and I haven't ruled out surgery or emergency med yet, so that ring would spend most of the time on a chain around my neck or in a locker anyway! I'd rather not carry around $100k that I can't even keep in one place for a full 24 hours - I'm stressing out just thinking about it 😅😅😅 besides, it seems to me that a gold band w/o stones would be a much better investment, depending on where you buy it (gold is very expensive in Sweden, but in Kurdistan (most of Middle East I think & probably at least India too) you pay for the gold (items are literally weighed and sold according to current international gold prices) plus a fee for the goldsmith's work which varies depending on the complexity of the piece... and if you buy second hand stuff, you don't pay for the designer's work, just for the gold (and ofc a very small additional fee so the store makes a profit)...

100 grand? How big of a ring do you want? Anyway, look on ebay for "Loose stones" and "settings". You can buy whatever types of stone you want, and the settings (rings) are many and varied. All you have to do is put the stones in the setting yourself and you can have a $100K ring for $20K or less... (Although, for THAT much... you might want to buy the special $15 "setting" pliers. ;P )

KOakaKO Lmao, I did the genius thing and typoed an extra zero, because conversions XD Two months worth of salary should equal around $10 000 - around 100 000 Swedish kronor - and since I think is SEK I just kind of skipped over the fact that I was WRITING in USD and, well, oops :P That said, I don't want a $10k ring either!! *shudders* I'd prefer just a plain gold band tbh, maybe with some kind of pretty metalwork details... But yeah, no, that was a typo ^^

When I got engaged, I told my fiance I did not want a diamond but a colored stone instead because I think they're prettier. He didn't like that idea because he thought people wouldn't think I was married without a diamond ring on my finger. Decades later, as a divorced woman, when my boyfriend popped the question, I told him I wanted a colored ring because I didn't want that whole "blood diamond" thing on my conscience. He accused me of not wanting anyone to know I was married. Obvs, there were some other issues there; but my point is that women aren't the only ones convinced diamonds are a must-have. I just think that's interesting.

Not in South Africa. The plural of "Boer" (your pronunciation is correct, however) is "Boers" in English or "Boere" in Afrikaans (pronounced "boor-a" ). Booren would be, as you say, the Dutch pronunciation but that doesn't really apply to this video. While I'm at it, Cullinan is pronounced as it is spelt, "Cul-li-nan", not "Cooleenian" as Simon pronounced it at 06:47

One day, after our Sun has expanded into a red giant, run out of fuel and blown off its outer layers, what will be left could very well be a diamond the size of the Earth. Other stars out there almost certainly have already done this, however, it would be awkward having a diamond quite that big, and who would you get to cut and polish it?
@HRW653
@HRW653 8 жыл бұрын
Not true, diamonds are carbon. Carbon is a relative light element that will fuse into heavier elements like oxygen and silicate all the way to iron before the star goes supernova
@pineapplepenumbra
@pineapplepenumbra 8 жыл бұрын
Lau I didn't work this out, I'm going by what I've read. The Sun is not a massive star, as stars go, it's sort of medium mass, so most of it won't fuse into heavier elements on a large scale at the end, neither will it go supernova.
@HRW653

Fair enough, but still it won't be a 100% cabron object that gets compressed into a massive diamond the size of earth
@pineapplepenumbra
@pineapplepenumbra 8 жыл бұрын
Lau How many diamonds are 100% carbon? Of course it will have many impurities. Using spectroscopes, one can find various kinds of chemicals in the Sun, Hopefully it will have impurities that turn it slightly blue, or maybe a bit pink, or maybe a variety of hues?
