I believe there is also a Latin phrase the newly dubbed knight is expected to recite. A few years ago, several people were being knighted at once, and one of them, to his severe embarrassment, realized that he had forgotten it. The gentleman, however, was Jewish and decided to fake it with some Hebrew from the Passover ceremony. The Queen noticed the substitution and, turning to her aide, asked, "Why is this knight different from all other knights?" (Sorry.)

I am presuming that the reason for the slap across the face is actually to symbolically remind the individual of the responsibilities they are taking on - that the obligations can be painful and that knighthood should not be taken for granted. The reason for this presumption is because the slap was also a custom in the Catholic Church when someone was being Confirmed by the Bishop for those same reasons mentioned above.
@ladyofthemasque5 жыл бұрын
The slap was made specifically to show that, prior to being knighted, the (presumed) squire had to take whatever blows he or she received. "Let this be the last blow you receive unanswered" was a common statement upon delivery of the slap, because after being knighted, it was expected that the warrior HAD to respond to all challenges & injustices & attacks as one of the responsibilities of knighthood. (And *YES* there were female knights in the Middle Ages; the French language of the day alone is proof enough, as it had two very distinctly different words for "wife of a knight" and "female knight"; our perception of "no lady knight or lady knights fighting only in disguise" came from Arabian texts reporting on the battles of the Crusades. In their culture, it was thought that women fighting at all was a bizarre and taboo thing, and thus these foreign women "had" to be doing it "in secret." Was it a common thing? Not really, but it wasn't exceptionally rare, either. Did the Church frown on it? Only if you read the missives written by misogynists & patriarchy types. Other records show that the Church actually hired lady-knight mercenaries at times, including as hired muscle protection for nuns when traveling, such as on the Compostela de Santiago, aka Saint James Way, a pilgrimage path between France & Spain to the Cathedral in Santiago, where it was believed the bones of Saint James lay.)
@laurakuhn87435 жыл бұрын
Well Spoken! SCA?
@ladyofthemasque5 жыл бұрын
@@laurakuhn8743 Yup. I had to do a research paper on it in my barony. Back then, the idea was that a squire was a servant, and servants had to take whatever punishments they were given. You were *supposed* to be treated well, but...well, slavery was a thing, serfdom was a thing, "peasantry have to be kept in their place" was a thing...and "might makes right" was definitely a thing. But the ideals of chivalry stirred up by Queen Eleanor of Aquitane & her "Court of Love" beliefs dragged the "might is right" crowd into behaving with a lot more, well, chivalry toward others. This would become the guiding point of "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" underpinning the chivalric ideals (Sorry, Uncle Ben, but you didn't think of it first!), i.e. if you have the power to smash people to death with your battle axe, broadsword, or halberd...you really shouldn't do it to anyone who simply exists, but instead should do it only to those who (purely for sadistic lulz) beat the bejeebus outta those who simply exist. This legally meant that turning the corner from squire/servant to knight/master was absolutely vital for everyone around you to understand that you now legally had the right to fight back (and the moral responsibility to fight back), whenever someone tries to smack you (or someone innocent/weak in front of you). Especially for the lulz of it. Knighthood conferred a lot of legal rights and responsibilities, and the ceremony of the "last blow unanswered" meant that it literally was the last time the person being knighted legally had to stand there and take a beating (up to a certain point; after that point, interventions might happen, & fines could be levied). The ceremony eventually evolved into something far less hitty/punchy/slappy, as knights themselves absorbed & cling to the chivalric ideas, with their society & culture as a whole no longer casually beating the bejeebus outta each other. That's when the "last blow" became a lot more symbolic. These days, in an European knighting ceremony, a common custom is to use a fancy, special sword rather than an open-palm slap from a hand. It is used by laying the blade flat upon the shoulder, then tilting it 90 degrees to touch the side of the neck (carefully without cutting clothing or skin), symbolizing the "last blow." The "inherent danger" of having a sword blade right next to your throat symbolizes the right your masters used to have to endanger your life while under their training, and the 90 degree tilt-and-touch represents the smack to the head the upgraded squire used to receive. Of course, there are other methods of knighting in use, and they can vary even simply by what an individual chooses to do. in the SCA (modern day medieval society), I have witnessed scores of knighting ceremonies over the years, and they will vary not only from sovereign to sovereign, but also it will depend up on the friendship level of the knight and person being knighted. I have seen blows delivered that rocked the person off their feet, staggering them sideways, or into the arms of friends braced to catch them., but I also saw that particular person prepare themselves, consent to the blow, and relax into it, allowing the force to move them (which reduces the injury, transferring the kinetic energy into motion instead of impact) rather than stiffening and resisting the blow (which would turn the kinetic energy into impact rather than momentum). I have also seen lighter slaps given...and things other than slaps. I have seen one actual punch to the face given, but it was clearly requested, & the fellow in question was known for participating in MMA and boxing, and the fellow delivering it was a sparring partner. I have also seen two punches to the gut, but again, they were prepared for it, tensed abdominal muscles, ready to take the blow. ...The funniest one would have to be the lady being knighted who had her friends lined up behind her, and the king did a facepalm-smack to her brow; she went over backwards like a felled tree right into her friend's arms...and since she was wearing her full combat armor at the time (about 60 extra pounds of weight) the three of them couldn't hold her up, so they all wound up dropping to their knees, trying to keep from dropping her. XD (They were all fine in the end.) Psychologically, it's a fascinating custom, sort of a coming-of-age ceremony for the squire. The idea is also that, with this last blow not only ends the risk of being beaten and ordered about, but also the end to being cared for by your master. No longer do you get free food & clothes & a place to sleep, but instead must make your own way in the world. (Often an important thing to understand for second & third born children who wouldn't inherit land in most cases, unless they were super-lucky.) On the bright side, most were given instruction during their years of training in how to negotiate contracts for services, so once they were the equivalent of free adults, they'd be able to find a place, negotiate wages, and so forth. Not everyone used it, of course, and beating kids isn't a good thing, period (lots of psychology studies are backing up how beating or even "just spanking" your kids isn't healthy for them later on in life)...but it did emerge out of the brutality of the Middle Ages. And psychologically, it could be considered a primitive way of teaching someone how to hold their tongue and hold their temper under trying circumstances, as well as teaching them compassion for others stuck in a similarly difficult position. Which a lot of knights actually did grasp & fight for, which is why it gradually evolved into more and more of a symbolic "slap" rather than a genuine whallop.

The discontinued tradition of the "Royal slap" at the knighthood ceremony was in tandem with the also now discontinued Catholic "Bishop's slap" performed in the Catholic sacrament of "Confirmation" ceremony, which goes back, at least, to the 13th century. The symbolism is meant to convey the idea that the slapee must be honorable, brave and stalwart in the face of all adversity both in his defense of his Sovereign and of hIs Faith. BTW-when the first openly LBGTQ person is to be so honored by the Sovereign would that person be "knighted' or "damed" (Sorry-not sorry).lol

Historically bestowing a knighthood was a way to raise money for the King. My ancestor was a knight banneret (by a nobleman during the reign of Edward I), one step up from knight-bachelor at the time, and was offered a higher grade knighthood by the King which he refused. Said refusal came with a 'refusal fee' equal to his income for one year. This fee was about a quarter of the 'acceptance fee' nominees had to pay. Thousands of knighthoods were tendered, knowing full well that most could not afford, or did not want to pay, the 'fee' to accept the dubious 'honor' - don't know how long this underhanded practice continued and whether this was repeated by the King whenever he wanted money and didn't want any strings attached to getting it. Not much has changed - the government gets what it wants one way or another.

I feel like it'd be easier to just change your name to "Sir xxxx xxx xxxxx" and call it that. Especially as a non british person, no need to worry about being knighted, just pay 250ish and change your name to something cool including a sir at the beginning
@samuraisoul10435 жыл бұрын
the slap had importance at one stage because it symbolised that this was the last time you were to take a blow or insult and from then you had the right to challenge by combat your right as a knight. it was unwise to slap a knight coz death may follow if you did so

the "slap" was to signify the this person has taken the last strike against them that they do not have the right to retaliate against. from then on...you have the right to strike back. it comes from the french.

You bet there are being perks to be knighted of the Queen. Just last night... I got so drunk that Her Majesty, the Queen Elizabeth, Herself knighted me and I have hence-forth been recognized as Sir Ossis of the Lyvver. 🍺🍺😆

Sir Patrick Stewart didnt’t have to go thru customs on his knighting day. I’m not sure he retained that privilege or if it was a one time thing, but I’m kind of figure customs hasn’t been much of an issue for him over the last 20-30 years.

Can the Queen and/of the president of the United States still give letters of marque and if so do they still act like the old ones for pirates?
@My_eyes_hurt2 жыл бұрын
12 minutes later and haven't learned anything except the Queen can do what she wants, and a knight has to be loaded to become a knight. I'm so confused how does one become a knight, or what are the benefits of becoming one.

I wish Texas had knights, as were permitted to open carry swords here. Nobody does it because like who carries a sword over a gun anymore, but shit if i was knighted id be carrying around a sword all damn day long

Even if they were it'd not be carried with them it'd be whats called a two handed ceremonial sword not one to be used in combat actually.

@@TheWinning247 yeah though its a Sgian Dubh lol, its more just a basic dagger though anyone can have one and its held in a sock and is always too blunt to do anything at all with.

@@jeremysmith54565 Not always blunt. Upon reflection, it might be the length of the blade that allows the Sigan Dubh to be carried... Mine's not more than 6 inch , where a sword generally is...
