I come from the prairies and never understood cats' and dogs' fear of loud noises. After moving to a rainforest and hearing dead trees break in high wind or live ones falling I understand that hiding under something when you hear loud noises is the right thing to do.

My pet has to listen to loud music sometimes and she sings with the music. She is really good at the Blues and rock and roll. But if we ask her not to sing, she is polite and stops singing😂🎉and we are loud sometimes,but she was raised with loud, so it doesn't bother her, if they don't like loud, they will hide from it... I used to put my other dog in the bathroom with a radio or soft music. Their hearing is more sensitive than ours so I think that is why loud stuff bothers them. Songs that last 3 minutes are something that pets just tolerate, but if they are suffering you can put them in a quiet room with the door closed, but the concussions must be terrifying to them, because pets can sense earthquakes before they occur, they are so sensitive to life🐱🐶😅

So heart breaking! I wish humans were not so fascinated by things that go boom and sparkle. I live in Las Vegas about 3 miles from the Strip, At the stroke of midnight began almost 15 minutes of constant fireworks. This was on top of about a dozen of the loudest bangs I have ever heard that some idiot in the neighborhood felt the need to set off around 10pm (which in turn set off 15 minutes of car alarms) All I could think about was all the cats who were being terrified by all this nonsense.😢

I live in the Netherlands it's always a war zone here (if you don't know look it up) and I live in a rural area where it is relatively quite compared to the bigger cities. My cat did pretty good, but I noticed he wanted a lot more pets, physical touch, and attention as a security blanket that I am here for him. Mades me sad.

My kitten experienced fireworks for the first time last night, thankfully it only lasted 10 minutes and not sporadically all night like usual. It scared him (spoke reassuringly and let him hide when he wanted. It breaks my heart to know Todd, like other critters, is still worried about the noise. Heck, it even bothers me, but at least I can wear headphones and prepare a bit in advance. So nice how you converse with Todd and how he responds to "dad"'s reassurance. Is it possible that his keen cat hearing was picking up a few last fireworks in the distance? But anyway - it would reassure him that tonight isn’t going to be a replay. It’s fantastic that you could prepare him for it the other day. All this makes people who don’t have speech buttons aware that cats as well as dogs have a big passive vocabulary, and can pick up many more words than we think they know. And that they do have a sense of anticipation and of time that’s much longer than we ever suspected.

The fear in his face, his ears go back, so expressive. These buttons really help. He relies on you so much. Makes me sad for when I had to give my cat away when we couldn't take him with us. Apparently, he wandered away from the people who took him and was seen looking for us. Eventually, he landed on someone's doorstep and was happy. Your channel has made me think differently about animals, especially domesticated ones, but even the wild kind.

I told my cats before noise all done, too. Also told them pop pop noise all done, in an effort to explain what noise. My button cat and some of them might understand what I said. They aren’t all as smart as Todd but they are less jumpy today! And so am I, never been a fan of that noise.

Yes, 2 Pets is an improvment over 3 Pets, a little less urgency, excellent. Still, he missed kibble due to his worrying himself into distraction, and Todd loves to empty his Mousie. Yes, when our Dogs or Cats [or any pet] is so distressed about Noises, it really is hard to have to observe. At least Todd can express his fear or wariness, so Dad can explain and reassue him. That's something at least, and I sense that as time passes, Todd's fear will lessen, tho I doubt it will evaporate entirely. Dad, keep repeating that the Noise has not and will never hurt him. Make him think to the past times of Noise, and remind him that he's safe, that you and Mom are there to protect him, and promise that future noise also will never hurt him. He trusts you, Dad, he will start to believe your promises. It will take a little while, since thankfully, Noise is not too common. But, Todd is intelligent enough to accept this fact, he just needs more events of Noise that indeed, do not hurt him as Dad promises. Oh, I am sorry if this seems bossy. The previous is ONLY a suggestion, but I have used this successful for my Kitty years ago, and for our German Shedder Thor, who was also terrified of bansg and fireworks. His Mom and I worked patiently to help him Settle and pay attention to the Noise, and that it never actually harms him. It took a year or so, but he accepted his safety as a fact and he has been calm and curious instead of scared. He turns 9 tomorrow! [January 3]

I have 3 sound machines and I turn them up to full blast and place them in places around the house. I live where they shoot off fireworks on New Years Eve. Just tried this and it worked great. Of my 4 pets 2 are afraid of the sounds. It made a wonderful difference.

In Estonia we have like a solid month of fireworks being set off at random times. Mostly it's teenagers behind it (most fireworks have 18+ on the package but we have some that are like 14+ and even these are quite loud and can be harmful if not handled properly) but occasionally it's adults that have had way too much to drink and think that everybody else should enjoy the fireworks. My cats are scared of the noise they make (I wish that they made more silent fireworks), I am just disturbed and annoyed by them.

One of the benefits of living in Central New York is that it’s too cold for a lot of New Year’s fireworks. We had just a little “before noise” to ring in the New Year and none since. I love fireworks, but my cats prefer small doses. I sure hope Todd bounces back quickly; it kills me to know he’s anxious. I love Glamour, Todd, and Paulie so much!

I wonder if a happy hoodie would work for him on these occasions. Groomers use them to block noise of running water and high velocity dryers. It’s like a thick hair band that covers their ears. Some cats calm down when it’s put on, others remove it. Poor guy. Can’t imagine what he think is going on. At least he isn’t hiding in a spot you can’t get to. If there ever was an emergency he doesn’t seem to be the type to hide - you could grab and go. Herding multiple cat for any reason (vet appointments etc) isn’t easy. If they sense that you are stressed or in a hurry they tend to run when you approach (my experience with 5 in my home). I was lucky only one possible 2 would hide for fireworks. Didn’t know about the hoodie. KZbin channel Girl with the dogs website sells them if you haven’t already tried something similar out.

We had fireworks here and I couldn't even see them out my window. But the cats were uncomfortable. I usually try to keep my Tiki inside when there's fireworks but he got out and so I tried to let him in when they got bad and it went off as he came in so was super loud and scared both him and Giraffe.

The neighbors near my last house would buy a huge amount of fireworks in the next state, then ignore the law regarding days/hours/place of use. I'm always nervous of the possibility of my house being set on fire by one. My last house had a detached garage, and I actually found one of those Chinese lanterns caught on the metal garage gutter. It was a near thing.

Do you watch the fireworks on TV? Maybe letting him see that’s what’s causing the noise, with the volume quieter, might help? I dunno. Where we live there are some fireworks in the next suburb. Sometimes the first couple scare the animals, but they seem to do ok mostly. ❤❤

The once-a-year noise of New Year's Eve is a gigantic and disturbing noise for anyone with the sensitive hearing that Todd (or any cat and some humans) has so it is not surprising that Todd is apprehensive about it returning soon. How to communicate to Todd just how many "laters" it will be until it happens again is puzzling. Are there sharp differences in the seasons where you live? If so he might understand it being gone until next winter. If not some other sense of many "laters" might be used. This is a tough one. For now reassuring him is probably the best you can do.

In addition to the noise, there is the smell of fireworks too. That can bother our pets and outside animals with sensitive noises. Imagine all the roosting birds, suddenly loud noises and burst of crazy lights in the sky. uffda. (I lost a pet bird one year to fireworks; she had a heart attack)
