The basics are vital, and professions make it look easy, but it's not, it takes years and years of repetition, honing their stroke and constantly working to improve their craft.

I actually don't see the natural hand position that should occur in this video and maybe I'm just not seeing it. When you do the [WHIP] Downstroke with the wrist, if your grip is loose enough (and you're holding the stick balanced at the fulcrum point - don't be too far back or too far forward on your stick), your stick should rebound up to around a 45 degree angle. This will then allow your back three fingers to provide the Upstroke (hit) while moving upwards to repeat the Downstroke (if you're doing a 2 stroke). If you're doing a Triplet (3 stroke) same scenario, but the middle TAP becomes a slight pivot movement which then sets up the back three fingers to provide the Upstroke (hit). I implore my students to use heavier sticks - most use 5A - so I'd suggest 5B as more weight in your hands provides more rebound. If you're struggling, try a heavier stick. If I'm using 5As I'm working FAR TOO HARD. If I'm playing Moeller on the HH, my finger speed tops out at around 180 BPM (playing eighth notes at that tempo). With Moeller it tops out at 210-215 BPM where I can play for an entire song or more without fatiguing. I can play faster than that, but can't maintain it for long periods. But if I'm using lighter sticks for Moeller on HH (which I wouldn't of course), my top speed drops almost 15-20%. I've been taught the German method where your arm goes out much further than the American grip method, but eventually on the kit, you just bring everything into the body and adjust your whip, especially when playing on the HH. Moeller on the HH provides a beautiful, relaxed groove (X x X x X x X x) and instantly adds space and breathing room to your beats. This is a LIFE CHANGING technique and please take the time to learn it and use it to your advantage!

My drum teacher when I was in high school called it whip stroke, and there were 2 basic versions: the triplet version (down-tap-up); and the double stroke version (down-up). It was a game-changer for me.

Hi Todd!!! Whewww, it certainly has been a while since I have heard the word "Moeller method!! It was one the single hardest things for me to get squarely set in my mind to be able to develop the muscle memory!!! Soooooooo, I am a bit torn between hearing the beauty of your explaining the "Moeller method," OR.... the fact that you are doing this while playing it on those gorgeous "Pearl Reference Pure's!!" Choices, Choices, choices... LOL!! ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER DRUMMER!!!!!!!!!! PEACE!!!!!!!!!! 🤘🏼 P.OST S.CRIPT... I have been listening to and comparing similarities with, other awesome "progressive" style bands while listening to "FINALLY GEORGE" in it's entirety and several times "ta boot!" Also, with the genre that this album has found itself squarely placed into, it is a Great Album!!! With great musicality being the hallmark that showcases the individual "crafts" of all musicians playing on this album!! Which also contributes to a very sonically pleasing album as well!!!🤘🏼
