Defense lawyer here. These detectives were not only trying to get the confession from Stephen, but also trying to get Stephen to act as crazy and as not believable as possible. Although they failed to get a confession, they successfully trapped Stephen into maintaining his creepy and motionless behavior for hours. The state attorney / public prosecutor would only need to play the interrogation tape again in court and it would be a nightmare to convince the jury of anything at all. Stephen was so not believable and not credible that even with weak circumstantial evidence, Stephen would be more than likely ended up in jail regardless of the strategy of the defense team.

Thank you Dr. Grande! I am a police officer and have conducted numerous interrogations. The behaviour McDaniel displays still makes me scratch my head. It’s like he’s reverting to a childlike state because he is afraid of the consequences of his actions. Not to armchair quarterback but there wasn’t enough of a rapport building phase to get around the character McDaniel was playing. I suspect the reason the detective thanked him for his cooperation was to make it seem like the abusive language was an investigative technique. Shocking as it sounds, how the interview ends does effect admissibility . I doubt anyone could have gotten him to talk though, possibly a female interviewer could have gotten a little further with a soft voice.

Could you please address the ways that people with ADHD can exhibit signs of personality disorders, like narcissism? I am an adult who is recently properly diagnosed with adhd, but was previously diagnosed with bipolar (I believe incorrectly). I spent the better part of a decade being medicated for bipolar....ineffectively, and a month being medicated for adhd and my life has changed dramatically. I find a lot of the symptoms to overlap, but would like to hear from a professional what you believe. Also, could you do a video on autism (especially the “ Aspergers” side of autism, yes I know they formally removed that label) and how those symptoms can be similar to personality disorders. I cannot find a lot of reliable information on how these things intersect
@intellectuallyhot34073 жыл бұрын
Wow the same thing happened to me. I was misdiagnosed as bipolar 2 and the medications made life horrible for me. Then finally got an adhd diagnosis and meds helped. Look up Dr Tracey Marx on here. She discusses adhd and autism

That makes me #4 here with this specific situation.... Like, ADHD & bipolar people have issues with money, right? But my issues are things like that i forget that i set bill money aside & essentially hide it from myself. Or i lose track of time & dates, so i ultimately have late fees even tho i was actually able to pay things on time. It's not that I'm putting myself in debt from going off & blowing 2x my monthly income on clothes, concerts and booze, as my bipolar I sister does... The symptoms might seem the same from the most generalized ways of listing them, but they're not.

I believe the emotion from the interview was “ bouts of hyperventilation, turned forcefully into raw emotions at the same time, trying to finish his objective of misleading away from her apartment and him. After hearing that the body was found in the parking lot, he was the one who placed it there, he walks away, sits down and hyperventilates. He goes back and has several more hyperventilation type spells, especially if/ when the body is mentioned/ or thought about. His emotion came from being scared about the fact she was discovered. His interview/ interrogation was zombie like because he has trained for cutting off any and all emotion and leads to give himself away. I personally feel that he intended to chike her unconciuos, do sexual acts of some sort, then leave. The fact that he had to kill her because she fought so hard, caused him to go to his apartment and assess how to handle the next part( which he clearly knew if she did die, he would dismember her, hence he had to go back to his apartment to open the hacksaw, he then returned, moved her to the tub, dismembered and disposed of her in such a manner that her body would have been long gone away before her dicovery of disappearance. The other fact I really grasped was that he had recorded her room, and if anything had been displaced during the struggle, he was able to put everything back into place afterwards. This is why he videoed her room hours before he entered her apartment. This was well planned with backup to every scenario, in my opinion. Just to note: tonight was the first time I heard of this, only watched the taped interview from news reporter, and the interrogation video one time each! now I will watch the appeals hearing video!

I saw Stephen's interrogation on YT and it was effectively unnerving. It takes a lot of dedication to remain seated in one position and maintain constant eye contact like he did. I believe this was deliberate rather than a coping mechanism. Also, he could have left or asked for a lawyer at any time because this was an interview rather than an arrest. I think he was hoping he would find out how much they had figured out and what proof they had. Though he didn't get any details, it was a power play that I think he won. He did not confess or give the detectives any information.

Hi Dr. Grande, I’m interested in whether you could do an analysis in a crime incident in an Amish community where several women and a man were sent to jail for forcibly cutting the beard of a member. It would be interesting the type of personality profile these members have, and it would be especially interesting to try to do this without offending the community. Location is Bergholz, Ohio. Thankyou. I feel sorry about how you seem to endure vivid details ....I did not notice any bits of light or dark humor. 🌿 The Amish community seems to live a hidden life too, until it comes out into the open. They too engage in criminal behaviour... Interesting analysis, Dr.Grande 😄 Your worth supporting 🌿☘️🌿

Great analysis! I agree with you that he seemed to be mimicking an emotional response during the tv interview. A lot of people think he was panicking because the police found the body but I think he expected they would find it. He was trying to act like someone who just discovered their friend was murdered so no one would suspect he was the one who murdered her.

Ever since you mentioned your admiration for Kevin Nealon I can actually see a parallel in your humor, and tend to see you behind your desk bringing us some vintage "weekend update" moments when you give your witty retorts and dead panned sarcasm. I love it! I cant afford therapy at the moment Dr. G, so having access to your channel brings me insight, humor and education into true crime, mental health, human behavior, and unsolved mysteries/theories. I appreciate how you shed light on mental health topics; it's people like you that have assisted in mainstreaming the science and logistics behind mental health, allowing society to deshelf the idea that mental health is something shameful. Regardless of any trolls or keyboard warriors that ever say anything negative about you or your channel, just remember that you are bringing tons of people entertainment, education, and joy all wrapped into your videos. I'm a big fan, and I appreciate your efforts and channel very much. You deliver and layout possible theories structured by Occam's razor (the simplest explanation is usually the right one) even when some of the cases all have bizarre possibilities; I particularly appreciate your style because I tend to be one of those listeners that get so seduced by the mystery of a case, that my "theory" brain goes into over drive, and my "logical" brain goes autopilot. Just know that you are definitely contributing to mankind by sharing your wisdom, wit and expertise for people like me that want to find knowledge & entertainment in a streamline form. If and when you are ever having a hard day, or doubt yourself on any level, REMEMBER THIS POST....tons of people appreciate, respect and thank you for your hard work

I love that your behavioral analysis and critical thinking also extends to the police. Many true crime videos just reinforce the popular belief that the division between “criminals” and the law abiding is vast. In reality, most of us break laws fairly routinely, and just haven’t been caught (jaywalking, borrowing medicine from a friend, drinking an alcoholic beverage in a solo cup at a picnic in the park, disregarding Covid curfew laws or motel laws about use for lodging only (no parties or guests during COVID-19), etc.

Creepy case. I remember when I was 20 years old I had a classmate at uni who got obsessed with me. We were friends first as I was friends with other guys in the class, but one day in a party out of nowhere he tried to force me to kiss him. When Lauren said: "Stephen, Stop!", well, it reminds me of me trying to stop this guy. He apologised and I thought that he was drunk that night, but then, one day after a year from this incident, he called me to tell me that he loved me, that he was taking medication (it turns out he was diagnosed with schizophrenia) and bluntly said he would like to have sex with me because he never had sex with anyone. He started stalking me relentlessly for a couple of years. Horrible.
