When my husband was dying from cancer, I would have given every dime we had for a chance at a cure for him. No matter how far fetched the 'cure' seemed I wanted to believe something would work. Luckily a combination of family and friends kept me reined in & I didn't mortgage our home for someone like Peter Popoff but I can see how that would happen. It's not always stupidity that drives people to support these evil clowns. Sometimes it's desperation. There's a special place in hell for people who prey on the sick and desperate.

I once worked for a TV evangelist, and I see a lot of similarities between him and Peter Popoff. In fact, I think all TV evangelists share these traits and practices to some degree. My guy had the healing, prayer cards (which are critical to finding new donors), the endless stream of requests for donations, the prosperity theology (only touched on), and the grand schemes - which never seem to come out as described. Regarding the money: These organizations really do need a constant stream of donations whether or not they are extravagant. They need to pay the rent on the building, the employees, their production facilities, and a myriad of miscellaneous things. It does have to be run like a business. However, they do make sure they themselves are comfortable. From a “business” point of view, it is important to look materially successful - it draws the people in, including people with money. For the most part, I thought the money properly accounted, but there were a couple of things that gave me pause. I would not recommend giving to places like this, no matter how faithful you are. There are truly deserving religious charities that actually help people while spreading the Gospel, but you have to spend time looking for them. I think TV evangelists do start, at least, from a genuine belief in God and calling to spread the Word of Christ. But the money and status are very strong temptations, and even the most sincere can be drawn from the straight and narrow. And those who aren’t sincere will take a shortcut to the bank.

Excellent video. One thing is puzzling me; why some people even when is obvious they are scam they keep on believing the scammer. My sister is this kind of person and has this habit of believing all scammers she met in her life. Felt never discouraged to find an other one. She hates me because I tried a few times to open her eyes and despise me for my ‘logic”. At the end despite all evidences she declare that she was right, and I am the person who is wrong, because I tried to make her avoid the mistakes giving her unsolicited advise. I will never understand those kind of people.

Hi Dr. Grande, I find it easy to see why your channel is growing at such a phenomenal rate. Your content is not only informative and insightful but at times hilarious. I would like to speak specifically about the topic of this video. As a Christian, I feel it is vital that people understand something. Those of us who are driven by a desire to follow the tenants of true Christianity find the behavior of this clown and any other like him, (mostly found on, but not confined to, television so called ministries) as repugnant as do others. I, and I suspect the vast majority of true believers, are more offended by this type of charlatanism than the public at large. The actions you describe here are entirely contrary to the tenets of true Christianity. Romans 13:8-10 'Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the Law For this, “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the Law'

I remember back in the 80s this clown was on TV. We actually received a letter that looked handwritten but was photocopied. My mother liked to watch religious programs on TV and she sent money to a few organizations. But even she, who had only a 5th grade education, knew Popoff was a fraud and wouldn't send him any money. I can't believe anyone would send him any money as he has been exposed as a fraud for over 30 years.

I recently received mail from him, it had “miracle water” and about 4 pages of what my life could possibly be like if I donated money to his organization…God can heal us from anything if it’s His will, and he has saved me from many things, but He has never asked me to give him anything except my heart. My dad was drunk one night and Perter Popoff came on, it was super early nothing better was going to be on but we were recovering from Rockband and it was summer so no one was tired. We jokingly called in and gave the guy a fake name but our legit mail. Then we forgot and like a month later our big ol' envelope came in. It was filled with an oil pack, instructions, green leaf things, a request for "donations" so that he could pray and make what we wrote on the leaves come true, some examples were to heal a sick person, get money etc. Also came with some gold string. It got forgotten until my dad got drunk again, yes again he was an alcoholic :/, and we jokingly went through the ritual it was like tying the gold string around a finger and writing on the leaves then put the oil on in like a cross formation if I recall. My dad was just drunk enough to actually fill everything out and put a $5 bill in, which wasn't even close to the required donation amount. Then he told us to put it in the mail in the morning. Being people pleasers and never knowing when not to listen to him and when to listen to him to avoid yelling, me and my brother put the envelope in the mail. Ironically that got us yelling because why give money to a con artist? Anyway, a week later my parents got a lotto ticket and actually won like $300??? And not that it was a good thing, but around the same time we found out we would be getting some of my grandpa's insurance money from his passing. Now obviously this isn't because of some religious hack but spooky none the less and I figured I would share my experience with this guy cause no one ever talks about him.
