The knots Rebecca had on her we’re exactly similar to the ones Adam did at his work, he also looked up on his web history “sexy Asian” and “bdsm” the night of Rebecca’s death. Adam also called the morning of her murder 911 referring to her as “some girl”, when he knew who she was. He also pretended to do cpr on the 911 call, as well at the trial he insulted the Zahau family calling them “posers”.

Exactly. Distancing himself from Rebecca. She’s “some girl”. And the phony breathlessness was beyond bad acting. He also immediately labeled it as a “suicide” instead of worrying if any murderers were still in that house, an innocent person would immediately say they had NO IDEA wtf had happened and they’d also leave as fast as possible in case killers were still there. There are body language experts on KZbin who look at testimony and give their opinions. They should do this one.

I’m with you. I’m not convinced that Adam necessarily did it, but there are just way too many strange things in this case. Plus I don’t think I heard the doc mention that her body sat in the sun for *hours* before the ME came and released the scene, so evidence was heavily degraded by the time her body was collected for analysis. I think I lot was probably lost thanks to that screw up. In almost all cases I think the simplest answer is the likeliest answer, and I think in this case people *think* unaliving is the simplest answer, but, like, no? It’s *unreasonably* involved and elaborate. I don’t think that’s what happened here.

There was a book and red rope. This suggests knowledge of usage. The book could be traced to the owner, so the idea of it being planted could be ruled out. I don't own red rope, nor do I know many that do. I'll I could think of was that red velvet rope that's used for barries at special events. @@JohmathanBSwift a bit weird, but the red rope is potentially one of the least surprising things here to me. For instance, my husband and I own red rope because we needed cotton rope for something and ended up buying a set of shibari (bondage) rope on Amazon that came with one bundle of black and one of red. Didn’t use it for that, but it was the first option when I searched for red cotton rope about 6yrs ago. Females have certainly killed themselves in the manner Zahau did. She killed herself in the way she did specifically to make it appear as if it was not a suicide. She knew people would think "What woman is going to hang herself in the NUDE, gagged, and restrained!" and thereby conclude that she did not commit suicide. Same with the note she wrote, to try and throw people off. She obviously did not want her death to be known as a suicide, but it is clear it was a suicide. If you know anything about DNA profiling, it is almost impossible that anyone other that Zahau was responsible for death. I think the detectives, medical examiner, etc who have between them 100s of years of experience in death investigations and who saw all the evidence first hand, know more than armchair youtubers.

As someone else mentioned here, what I find odd is that Adam immediately assumed this was a suicide on the 911 call. If you saw a naked woman, bound and gagged, hanging from a balcony would you right away think she committed suicide? He specifically said “I got a girl hung herself”. Maybe she did commit suicide but I’m not thoroughly convinced. If it was out of guilt and shame, why not have her last words reflect that? Instead I’m supposed to believe she writes some cryptic message, in the third person, instead of some sort of apology? The cryptic message almost seems taunting and is not indicative of being written by someone who feels immense guilt and shame. Those aspects alone give me pause when it comes to agreeing that this was a suicide.

A number of suicides take their clothes off first. One thing that may be a reason, and sorry if this is a gross-out, but when someone kills themselves, especially with a violent method such as hanging, the bladder and bowels let go. People can certainly commit suicide on impulse, but others research the method first. If they do, they may certainly come across this fact. When the body is found, it would be cleaner than if they were dressed.

I too will respectfully disagree. Dr. Grande doesn't address the fact that she was found naked (the why of this). If she wasn't known to have any mental issues prior, I think it's very odd behavior to commit suicide in such a complex manner AND to do so naked. If she supposedly felt so much shame and guilt to the point of wanting to die, how odd is it that she didn't have shame to bare her body and be found like that? As a woman, I find that difficult to process. My theory is she was suffocated or strangled beforehand and to cover it up, she was tied up and thrown off the balcony. Whoever did it could have used gloves and cleaned up after themselves, and ran the rope through her hands. They also apparently cleaned up any footprints off the balcony because how odd is it that only hers were found (and the one cop), but nobody else's who lived or worked in the house, including her husband?

Years ago on Dateline NBC they said no DNA was found on the rope or in bedroom,Adam's or her own DNA, as if the killer wiped it or had on gloves. The being nude is like the killer humiliating her one last time knowing she would be discovered that way ,generally speaking women don't commit suicide by hanging themselves, usually it's sleeping pills. Adam absolutely had a motive! He believed his nephew - who was in the ICU in critical condition at the time - was murdered or severely neglected by Rebecca. If she had just received a voicemail update from Jonah to say Matt was passing, wouldn't he have left one for Adam, too? The worst part for me is that Matt's death was immediately investigated as a crime and deemed suspicious. I'm not saying it couldn't have been, but it's a huge reach. Yet that same police department rocks up to Rebecca's crime scene and go bingo - suicide!

@An lace It's peculiar because it is extremely uncommon for a person who commits suicide to be found naked (why would she want to be found in an embarrassing position), gagged and tied up which sounds like a murder by someone who had a lot of contempt for her not a suicide. It is not impossible to clean a crime scene of DNA or make a murder look like suicide when it is not a bloody crime scene o struggle occurred (all the killer if she was murdered would have had to do was wipe their DNA off the ropes, the area around her body and on her body). Look at the case of actress Adrienne Shelly who was found hanging from her shower rod. Authorities believed it was a suicide and her murder would have been classified as a suicide if her husband had not insisted that his wife had been happy and would not have taken her life leaving their daughter without a mother.

@@crystalb4178 why would it matter for her to be found in an embarrassing position? She is dead so she would not feel embarrassment. Also, people who throw themselves in front of trains are well aware that their bodies will be often mutilated beyond recognition, but they do not care about the embarrassment or gore that others will see. If this was a murder (which it is not) there would clearly be signs of a struggle, the murderer would have defensive wounds, there would be significant noise, the murderer's DNA would be all over her in places of the body which indicated a struggle (e.g., under finger nails, on hand regions, etc.)...unless she just said "O.K., go ahead and kill me, that's OK." Do you know the process of DNA profiling? Believe me, you can not just get a rag and "wipe off" your DNA. It is extremely difficult to remove some DNA, let alone all. For example, he would have had to use something like sodium hypochlorite, which would then be present all over her body and all over the scene, so then there would be evidence of the DNA removal. And you can not then just remove the DNA removal substance! The many professionals who investigated this case twice got it right, she killed herself. Not a doubt at all.

The jury in the civil case had all of the viable evidence and found that the boyfriend’s brother was responsible for Rebecca’s death. The other defendants named in the lawsuit could have been dropped for common reasons in cases, such as lack of evidence to prove in court (despite their beliefs of guilt) or negotiations between attorneys, etc. I think there was premeditation (e.g. killers knew Rebecca was interested in black magic and decided to use the rope tying to make it appear that she had done this to herself). Even if Rebecca had a history of impulsive behavior, it was never self-harm (her stealing jewelry was for HER BENEFIT, but she got caught) rather for her personal gain (e.g. leaving her nurse spouse for another wealthy successful man). Dr. Grande is usually good at seeing the big picture, but sometimes he is mistaken (due to personal bias).

I remember this case. Absolutely horrible. I don't think she committed suicide. Why would she be naked and shove something in her mouth?? It makes no sense. I think Adam was responsible. He was furious that his nephew was in that condition. How did she tie her hands behind her back and also put the rope around her neck? Why would anyone who was trying to commit suicide shove something in their mouth, toe their hands behind their back, put the rope around their neck and hang themselves? 🤔 Also I don't think the boy accidentally fell down the stairs either. Maybe she was frustrated and overwhelmed. But I don't think his injuries would coinsice a fall from the balcony.

Personally I find it difficult to accept she would commit suicide in such a dramatic way - it was SO staged I have never understood that a person in such circumstances would go to that elaborate length. And to wind it back a little - who was at fault and why Max died in that manner? I have seen so many theories of that also. I tend to believe this was NOT suicide. Oxygen, a channel on American TV did a very in depth dive into the case. What they find is quite surprising. Something that stood out to me was how the bed only moved 7in when she fell over 9 ft. They recreated the whole thing using a crash test dummy that weighed the same as her. Every way they dropped her the bed moved over 20 inches, a couple of the drops her feet actually touched the ground. Most people that hang themselves is usually something tied above their heads then they step off a chair. For a body to drop over 9 feet would cause significant injuries to the neck. the rope would have cut into the skin. None of this was consistent to the findings at the scene or her body. The only way the bed would move would be if she was lowered down. The 3 people that reexamine the case one was a female formal LA criminal prosecutor, one an investigative journalist, the other was a forensics investigator. The way that the gentleman in the video didn't regard any pertinent evidence to come to his conclusion shows disinterest. Basically in the same way that the SDPD handled the case. I would urge anyone interested in this case to go on KZbin and search Murder at the Mansion Rebecca Zahou. (Even the 3 people that reexamine the case left with more questions than answers.)

My very wonderful and very special brother in law hung himself with a bright red scarf, my sister, and VERY unfortunately, my little niece, 8 years old - found him. Their minds couldn't make sense of it, they thought he was playing a joke at 1st but when it sunk in for my sister she immediately called 911 and myself, when I got there, my immediate instinct was to get him down and maybe save him, but the paramedics had to stop me, I later found out it was because there was a possibility that it may have been a crime scene. It wasn't, but my heart goes out so deeply to anybody that is in such terrible darkness that they actually do that themselves! And it's a terribly scarring event for the survivors! If Max was still doing well at the time of Rebecca's death than the note and the suicide make no sense at all. I would have to say that until someone actually passes, there's that tiny bit of hope. I could understand suicide after Max had passed, but not before. I think the most important fact is whether Max was still doing well that first night or not. If he was I don't think it was suicide; if he had suddenly taken a turn for the worse, suicide is more likely, but I still think she would have waited until all hope was gone. These brothers were rich and had a motive for foul play. Personally I suspect Rebecca’s little sister may have had an accident while rough-housing with Max which contributed to his death. She was then sent away by Rebecca as a safety precaution. I think the erased voicemail was blackmail in the form of an ultimatum saying to Rebecca that when Max dies her sister would not be safe. To show that Jonah was serious on this threat he had Adam leave that message on the door, it was meant for Rebecca. ‘She’ refers to the sister; ‘him’ refers to Max; ‘You’ refers to Rebecca; ‘her’ refers to the sister again. “Saved” could be interpreted more closely to how an angel of death saves people. My theory is that after Rebecca read that message she decided to pay for her sister’s debt with her own life. An eye for an eye.

Maybe if she hadn't been found hanging, hands tied behind her back and naked in the balcony I might have been swayed, also it sounds like the evidence was a bit too clean and the scene of the crime was already contaminated by her being cut down prior to the police being called. Someone wanted to humiliate her and silence her, thus why she was gagged, the killer felt that she was being humiliated by leaving her hanging in the balcony and the way of death feels like they might have blamed her for Max's death...or that they wanted to cause harm to her husband. Max growing worst might have been the trigger if it was someone who blamed her for the child's death which is what I feel happened. Either way, nothing about this case screams suicide to me.

I don’t like that he cut her down. I get rushing to a body to help them, but she was clearly dead, it’s a crime scene now. Call the cops? It’s a ritzy neighborhood, they’d have been there in 2 seconds. I can’t imagine a scenario where I’m cutting a body down. Nope. Shady.

Definitely disagree on this one as there's a lot more evidence that wasn't touched on here. For starters, no woman who is distraught over the impending death of her stepson & _grieving as a mother_ is going to kill herself in a theatrical BDSM display.... red rope, bound & gagged, naked, & next to the steps that the boy fell down?? Whoever strung her up went to a lot of trouble to ensure that she died _right there..._ running this extra long rope around furniture rather than finding a shorter place to tie off. That certainly doesn't strike me as an "impulsive" person. Also odd was that phrase written in the _3rd person_ & painted with an unskilled hand... the _absence_ of DNA & prints other than Rebecca's in a house shared with multiple people... the highly suspect 911 call.... and more. There are _far too many_ question marks in this case for me.

Weren’t Max’s injuries INCONSISTENT with a fall? I don’t know. I think I might disagree with you on this. Which is rare. 😉 I watched the police reenact the hanging and they tossed the dummy over the deck. If Rebecca killed herself she wasn’t tossed. The body hit differently. I have less truss for police interaction with rich, men who are likely happy to donate money to local funds to see something rules a suicide. Maybe I am being a little too conspiracy theorist with this ( and I hate conspiracy theories, especially political ones) but as a woman, who is 52 and in good shape I would still never hang myself naked or walk around the house without a feminine product in while on my period. It doesn’t make sense. I know you didn’t cover this part of the story, but there are multiple channels that have. Bailey Sarian, Kendall Rae and Stephanie Harlowe have done great jobs on this case. Sad all around. The young boy and Rebecca both gone. One a likely accident and the other? Who knows. I lean towards murder. A woman wouldn’t hang herself naked. I just don’t see her allowing herself that vulnerability in her death. Especially being on her period.

@@anlace3447 she would have had to hop or shuffle her way to the ledge of the balcony. Try hopping from a flat footed position to your toes while your feet are together. If she flung herself over a balcony and fell over 9ft why were the ligature marks on her neck and injuries inconsistent with the hight of the fall? She was tied to the bed frame which only moved 7in when she fell from a height of over 9ft. Everytime this was recreated the bed moved more than 20 in, in some instances her feet touched the ground. Murder at the Mansion Rebecca Zahou on KZbin reexamines the case in detail.

@@scarlettthebrave7379 I know for a fact that the brother's DNA was found on her. Now, it was not found in her sexual organs, but he tampered with the crime scene extensively. Her cut her body down, contaminating both the rope and her body. He did everything he could to make sure he had an excuse as to why his DNA was there. He did watch Asian related porn the night before, but that isn't a crime. However, I can't remember if it was bondage based. Either way, not a crime and has to be disregarded.

I agree. I almost always agree with Dr. Grande's general conclusions, but not on this one. It's great that he airs on the side of reasonable doubt, disregarding a degree of circumstantial evidence in cases, but in this case I feel like he's overlooking a *lot* of circumstantial evidence. Obviously, there was never close to enough evidence to charges Adam or anyone else criminally with Rebecca's death. However, I do think the evidence points more towards that being the case than suicide. I'd say between 60/40 and 70/30 murder/suicide.

Your reasonings are basically that you believe it was a suicide because it's possible, despite the fact that it's very unusual and highly unlikely, then proceed to try to explain with theories to try to fit your conclusion. That's not at all convincing. That's like saying that a knife accidentally got slipped, bounced off several surfaces before stabbing the victim and it's an accident and definitely not someone else stabbed the victim. Sure, it could be possible but what are the chances of that happening? The setup was also too elaborate and would have taken lots of time, planning and effort to get everything ready. Suicidal people who act on impulse don't spend that much time and effort to plot their suicide and most definitely don't have that kind of energy to set everything up . Depressed and suicidal people want to end things quickly and would often find the easiest, fastest way with the least amount of effort and pain. Moreover, her being nude and dying in a humiliated way is just incomprehensible. It's even harder to believe for an Asian, Christian women would want to die that way. Moreover, how is it possible that the investigator found no DNA in the crime scene of anyone else? Like, I don't believe that no living creature went near her room, or touched her, for an extended period of time, prior to her dead. If they found DNA evidence of Adam, Jonah or others but rule them out for some reasons then sure but no DNA? I find that hard to believe. Moreover, what about the fact that Adam cut her down and did CPR on her? What is more likely to have happened is that the investigators got paid to intentionally ignore evidence. And what about the results from the second autopsy that suggest that Zahau died from manual strangulation rather than from hanging? What about the evidence from the second autopsy that indicated that she was sexually assaulted prior to her death? Moreover, there were 4 head traumas. If she hit her head once or twice on the way down, I could understand but 4 times? What's more likely is that Adam tied her up, sexually assaulted her ( Adam had search history about bdsm and sexy asian shortly prior to her death, didn't he?) and accidentally choked her to death during the assault, then paid off the police to ignore evidence, cover up, and ruled the whole incident as suicide. I believe that the court's verdict that Adam was responsible for Rebecca's death is correct. Though, I also think that it might be possible that perhaps Dina was also involved. That would explain why Rebecca died in a humiliating manner. Dina might want Rebecca not only dead, but also humiliated.
