This story is bizarrely similar to what happened to my brother. He died in Hawaii this year while homeless. He was a musician and an artist and a vegan and had gone through a lot of problems too, we miss him so damn much. Prayers for Alex’s safe return. We also grew up in Maine.

Upon visiting Hawaii a few years back my thoughts were that it was a great and beautiful place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there . Too remote for me . A guide on the Big Island mentioned that the islands had many visiting people disappear every year and it was thought that at least some may have fallen into volcanic vents that are made difficult to see by surrounding vegetation . I don't know how plentiful these vents are on Kauai but I can attest to the rain , mud and bad footing . It must be terrible for his family to be left wondering what has happened .

There is a reason why most of the land on the Hawaii Islands is not populated - because it's dangerous! (Or owned by rich people and completely blocked out) Looking on the map and thinking there is just a lash beauty forest there is so silly, but many people coming here to live on land still think that. Hawaii is extremely treacherous and dangerous, especially Big Island and Kauai. If you didn't grow up on islands and try to go extreme hiking by yourself, chances of accidents are huge. True every month people die or disappear hiking.

Alex Gumm has similarities to Christopher McCandless in that they were searching for an esoteric meaning for life and their 'dream' eventually led to their deaths (possibly for Gumm). Very sad. He sounds like he was talented and creative. I hope his family finds the peace they deserve.

Did he have medical evaluation. I wonder. His traveling to India first and then wanting to travel Kaui. Lots of youngsters are adults but definitely not mature to face unknown territories alone. We see often in western cultures. So much loss of young lives with the whole world in front of them. Lots of them educated too. In some cultures they don't know where their next plate of food is and no roof above their head. Let alone travel to these strange places looking for only God knows what. Sad.

He didn't join a cult because there's no way a cult wouldn't have emptied his bank account. Twenty years ago I would have said that he was unlikely to have been murdered as a homeless person on Kauai. Back then living on the beach on Kauai was pretty normal. But I've heard that homelessness has become a lot worse in Hawaii. But it's very likely that, if he is dead, he was not murdered. Nor would he have had to follow through on a self sufficiency fantasy to get into trouble. Kauai is actually pretty dangerous. The Nā Pali coast is made of very old volcanic rock, and the interior wilderness is not a place for amateurs. And the beaches can be dangerous. Some of them are swimmable and some really aren't. Not all the risks are obvious. Swimming the day after a heavy rain might get you attacked by a shark just because the water is murky. My idea is that he felt his personality changing and instinctively fled from everyone he knew. He may have eventually lost his original sense of who he is. In some of his photos, he's smiling but his eyes look scared. The only adult photos where he seems at peace are the ones where he's playing music. Wishing him peace and happiness.

How sad for the family not to have answers or closure. I would rate the theories in this order: 4. 2. 1. 3. If he died from foul play he no doubt would have been discovered. Theory 2. makes some sense since he talked about joining a monastery. It's possible that monks are covering for him. I feel it's also possible he is hanging out with the homeless or same-like minded type people. He might be deliberately not spending money from the bank account because he wants people to think he's dead.

He does live with residual physical effects and limitations. Note: You probably know he knows plenty about guns and cars. The other was a description of a typical day in producing videos, from research to uploading, how much time etc. Also his motivations in producing a high volume of work, making money while he can while his work is popular. Thank you for the video Dr Grande. Before I listened to your podcast I always think that the most dangerous thing which is threatening our life is the possibility of foul play so I always be careful with strangers. As I learned about the information from you I started to understand that most frequent thing that endanger one's life is his or her own reckless behaviour ( drink, use of drug, cigarettes) etc.The second dangerous thing is our high risk activities in nature (eg climbing mountain) without adequate preparation

Poor kid. I hope he's living off the grid somewhere, but realistically after all this time it's more likely he perished somewhere out in the wild. It'd be really hard to go that many years without needing any money. He had money saved so he must have planned to buy a few things at some point, so it's telling he's never accessed it.

Living off grid is an exciting concept to people who have never lived off the land and who usually make fun of people who live off the land. The fact that he googled edible plants in Hawaii tells me he never took a real course, or bothered to ask a few oldies who know these things. Sad.

He may be out in the jungle there. I once met someone who’s been living like that for years. It’s possible. There’s some wild fruits growing there, no deadly poisonous animals and the weather is good year round. Sounds nicer than it actually is, but it’s doable. He may also be dead though. There’s some parts of the jungle that are covert agricultural enterprises. The owners don’t take kindly to strangers stumbling upon their plants.

Oooo-kay! On the Hawaiian Islands is a large homeless population. I have yet to meet someone who is voluntarily so. And to preemt an argument that homeless people come from other states or are sent by other states to ease there own problem could not be corroborated by data. Existing data shows people who were born here or long term residents. Most homelessness is hidden (sleeping in cars, on someones couch etc). The homeless you encounter prominently are often there because of a lacking infrastructure to care for mentally ill people or drugs or both.

Dr. Grande! I love your videos! You are such a calming voice of reason to listen to describing such horrific incidents. I just want to stop by and give you a teeny pronunciation tip as someone who adores Kauai and has been there many times (without going missing, obviously). In Hawaiian, when you have an apostrophe, it makes the sound between the two vowels into a glottal stop like bow Cockneys say “bottle” as “bo’l”. It’ll always be that way in Hawaiian as far as I have known. Hawaii is also actually supposed to have a glottal stop as Hawai’i is the proper spelling. I hope this helps in your Hawaiian adventures! The locals will look at you slightly less annoyed if you pronounce it better. They are annoyed by us anyway… don’t let it bother you too much if you are vacationing there.

I'm suspicious if he even made it to Hawaii... If this fellow really thought he was a Lemurian, then they're looking in the wrong place. Mt. Shasta is the place to look for him. Deep within Shasta is Telos, the rumored hidden City of Light where Lemurians escaped to after the destruction of their island paradise. Lots of New Age types make pilgrimages to Shasta in search of Telos... ...It would be really bizarre if his fate is somehow entangled with the disappearance of Davohnte Morgan...the similarities are quite striking.

Sounds like he spiralled down further and further over the years of self-treatment. He may have purposely emulated some hippie heroes like Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain who also did not survive PAD and died in their mid-20's.

Kauai is an easy place to disappear off the face of the earth from. The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources states that Kauai has a population of over 300,000 wild pigs, that are very able to dispatch anyone suffering a disability via consumption or illness. Add to that fact that there is no 'continental-shelf' that may moderate the oceanic action as it intersects the shore. Its very possible to be swept off the beach, or from near shore waters by a 'rip-current' that will not, in most areas ever return you to the shore. Take heart in the 'near death' experience stories that are prolific among humans. There may actually be an existence in a different dimension for each of us after our mortal coil relaxes.
