Your description paralleled my experience with depression exactly, and it was the combination of an effective therapist and appropriate medication which enabled me to return to a stable mood which has lasted over ten years now. A major stumbling block for me was finding a medication which worked, and it took a long period of trial and error to find a medication which helped me. Unfortunately, some meds made things worse and had unpleasant side effects. Careful auditing of my mood by my therapist while trying different meds is what finally helped me to find the one that was helpful. All I can say is KEEP TRYING with the help of your doctor and your therapist until you find what works for you. Medications affect everyone differently, and what works for one person may not work for someone else.

I’ve been told for years that I’ve had depression, since 2013. In May of 2020, my therapist and a Psychologist diagnosed me with MDD, severe and GAD, severe and Complex PTSD. I never knew that MDD differentiated from depression because of the episodes that are experienced.

MDD having a 12 month prevalence in 7% of the U.S. population, we are talking about nearly 23 million people! That is an incredible large number. I would not have guessed that.

Great topic, Dr. Todd Grande: I wanted to touch on something you did not mention, often times, major depression is closely associated post heart surgery and post Thyroid surgery. It is not exactly clear what happens during the surgery but one example i know of an individual had her thyroid out and was never the same, she was now living with major depression and was told she would need meds the rest of her life, she had no previous history of depression, now living with severe hormonal imbalance that lead to depression: it did not come and go, the change in the brain can be permanent. She had no drugs involved, I also know someone else who had heart surgery same thing so its interesting to note if the individual had a major surgery prior to the onset of the depression that could bring on depression. thank you

Check on the isolation, plus now I have developed photophobia "light sensitivity" and live controlling eye pain that will trigger migraine. Anyway, yeah, the depression is so isolating, but what I want to say BRAVO Dr. Grande to is YES, particularly my mother, will move away from me when my symptoms are really running me ragged but she will come closer again, even admonishing me to be safe at night, when she thinks I'm on an up. I will chalk this up to family-related factors for depression, of which the family tree has scores- that we have a dance finely tuned from generations coming down to us , plus just so many other factors like my step dad's alcoholism and we are all super Claudia Black: IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME'd but I'm also if the most "ill" the most into psychology! To refer to that book to anyone in my family is to get a Huh? I mean, I bought one for my sister but she never read it. And my brother disowned us and changed his name. People would rather get away from each other-in my nuclear family that I grew up with- than be intimate. Only again, they would not think it thru this far to say, I can't be intimate. So this is great. I'll have to find your video, Dr. Grande, on the .. ?word "itiological" I guess birth factors and environmental risk factors for major depression. My mother is an adopted child and has a Dismissive / avoidant attachment style, and I besides being depressed have an anxious disorganized / and or preoccupied attachment style. :::: And as we get older, my sister and I are pulling apart not getting closer. Anyway, good note, Doctor! Thank you! Whew.. !

A second note of nodding to the realism of a substance abuse disorder. I'm going to watch these. But not quite form the angle, and it's a interesting predicament--- and which comes first, drug use or depression- I stated smoking cigarettes when I was 13, almost 14. I smoked for 34 years before going cold turkey 7.5 years ago, Today is day 2,745 MOF. And as a teen, yes, I did a lot of coke, pot, - it was the late 70s / 80s and, as you have said elsewhere Dr. Grande, we used to "wander around" alot.. Get off the wall-mounted Kitchen phone and then go driving places, taking mushrooms and wandering the woods, or going to the beach. The point being, my brain got wired hard for nicotine and while I went on to try just about everything, I managed to not get addicted to anything else. .. Until recently however when Cannabis became legal in my town and I could go get some and.. cut to a year and a half later.. I've developed a bit of a crutch about smoking! Fart! Or stronger word! It SUCKS! It's just pot, so but also yes I have to cope with psychological dependence there too but mostly I'm talking about, lately I'm looking at all these videos wondering if my diagnosis needs a refreshing maybe to bipolar or borderline when then, for example, Dr. Grande brings up having to rule out SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDER. NICOTINE and Smoking are just as devastating as any other "actual drug". And I'm stuck with this, possibly. And embarassed to be all caught up having to smoke pot because my smoking fingers are going crazy! .. I can't honestly say, to a new psychiatrist or therapist, Oh hi, I think I've uncovered I'm either x or x, can we spend some months and you ask me questions? until also I've come to terms with whether symptoms of borderline I feel, including anger, or to do with my damned cigarette smoking habit and also just generally taking so many drugs and now cannabis is legal, a pandora's box for someone in my situation.

I had to look up psychomotor disturbance. It would be helpful if you defined some of these terms. Comorbidity is another one that gets a little confusing. I take it that comorbidity means that two conditions occur at the same time, but because morbid has to do with death, it sounds really dire.

I find it very interesting that although females are 1.5 to 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with MDD than males, the course and treatment response is the same with males and females.
@lrrrruleroftheplanetomicro68815 жыл бұрын
yet men have a higher risk of suicide. maybe females are better at reporting MDD because, for societal reasons, they have better access to their emotions.

Thank you Dr. Grande. Can MDD be caused by a hormonal imbalance? I have suffered with MDD over 10 years now. Psychotherapy was not at all helpful. Zoloft has been a great treatment for me. If I miss more than 2 doses of Zoloft, a very noticeable angry mood swing occurs. Is this normal?

So what do we do with the loss of energy every day? Cause i got a house to care for and i can barely get out of bed. I have MDD and GAD. Im not getting much help. They just keep giving me lexapro and its not working. It worked to a point then leveled out. I tried remeron but had a reaction. I have a life to live and if i could just go, i might would start feeling better mentally too. More excercise and actually finishing a goal. This energy level has me so down on myself for being lazy. Ive had reoccurance but dont remember it ever tanking my energy levels in the past.

Last comment: I remember being a young adult, or maybe I was in my thirties, anyway, when there was a Front Page News type of study result about making the connection between teens and drugs and depression and which comes first, does smoking cigarettes cause depression , or does depression cause smoking and other drug use. I don't remember what the survey said, but I felt so relieved. And, typing just now I'll go with nicotine causes depression in a young mind. Maybe I don't have substance abuse disorder, Dr. Grande mentions another illness about behavior associated.. Anyway if anyone reads this, thanks! .. I can type like the wind! : ) *\o/*
