River’s story is an interesting experiment in storytelling. We learned her story out of order (mostly back to front) over several seasons. They have to compare diaries each time they meet because their timelines don’t match up 1:1.

The day doctor first met her is when she died. And he always knew how she would die. Living with and loving someone, knowing how and when they die... Poor Doctor.

River will forever be probably my favorite Doctor Who character. Despite how tragic her story is, especially her and the Doctor's love story, I can't help but love her. And them together! Even though it says something about her imprint (her consciousness saved to a computer) fading, I personally like to believe it didn't, and the Doctor goes to see her sometimes. They just deserve to be happy okay 😭😭. Also just a random little detail: River is referenced several times after the last time the Doctor sees her, but one of my favorites is that throughout the season after her "death" (aka, like I said, the last time the Doctor sees her), the Doctor has an office in a college. On his desk he has a photo of River

Do you know the end of the story of River and the Doctor ? (at least in Moffat mind, he told that a few years ago. That's not canon (but it's canon in Moffat's mind, so it is in my mind too :D). When the Doctor got through (will get through) his ultimate regeneration, he transfered his consciousness into the library ... And he became the last Doctor. Doctor Moon.) So, in the end, River is with her husband.

River's story is one of the best storylines in the history of Doctor Who (or any other show), when we realize who she is (Amy and Rory's daughter), that was one of the biggest wtf moments for us, Whovians. I'm glad you liked it, the whole thing is just brilliant (written by Steven Moffat). :-)

My first thought when I saw the title was "oh NO this is going to fall completely flat because putting it all in order is only cool if you experience it out of order from the doctor's POV first!" but actually, because this wasn't just a straight retelling of river's timeline, it works pretty well as an introduction to her story. phew! Basically, from the Doctor's POV, he first meets River as Ten (Tennant), on the day she dies. (Her physical body, anyway - her consciousness remains saved in the Library database for a while after, a couple hundred years I think?) She seems to know everything about him and he is Very Confused by the whole thing. Everything is scrambled up and out of order from that point, but ~generally~ speaking, River and the Doctor's timelines run opposite each other, so the younger he is, the older she is, and vice-versa. It's more scrambled than that, but that's the general trend. One of the things River says the first time the Doctor meets her is that she last saw him at the Singing Towers, so for the entire time the Doctor knows her, he knows the day he takes her there is the last time he will see her (in her timeline) before she dies. That's what's going on at 6:40 when she accidentally steps into the wrong TARDIS - both versions of Eleven known that the older version is getting close to the end of her timeline, and the look of understanding they exchange with each other is just heartbreaking for the audience. We've been in the Doctor's POV this whole time, so we know what that look means. It's brilliantly done.

River Song is a beloved character. One of Moffat's best ideas. We experience their relationship through the eyes of the doctor. It's incredible to go back and watch the episodes because at times you can piece where she is in her timeline based on context clues. For example when she sees Rory in the prison and he asks her to come help at Demons Run, she is happy and amazed to see Rory. That's because he and Amy had already been sent back in time by the angels.

I should point out that the show itself has a different timeline for River that we saw in The Wedding of River Song episode of Doctor Who Confidential in 2011, so if anyone wants to watch River’s story as Moffat wrote it then I’ll put it below: 1. A Good Man Goes to War (baby Melody) 2. The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon (child Melody) 3. Let’s Kill Hitler 4. Closing Time 5. The Wedding of River Song 6. First Night/Last Night (River’s first night and her five years later) 7. A Good Man Goes to War (River goes to the 1814 Frost Fair and then straight to Demons Run) 8. The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon (adult River) 9. Bad Night/Good Night (River is offscreen) 10. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang 11. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone 12. The Wedding of River Song (Amy’s Garden) 13. Rain Gods 14. Last Night (River wearing the evening dress on the way to Darillium) 15. The Angels Take Manhattan 16. The Husbands of River Song 17. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead 18. The Name of the Doctor I won’t even try and go into her audio adventures as she’s been in so many stories now! I may have just outed myself as a River fanatic.

This has to be the most spoiler-heavy clip ever! Which is fitting or ironic, given that River's catchphrase is "Spoilers!". She is a great character and I love what Steven Moffat did with her over (sort of) 5-6 series and 3 Doctors.

I love that even after River's time in the show, there have been little referencies along the way: The episode right after the final episode we see River in (the one with the twelfth Doctor), the Doctor is mourning River. A woman (can't remember her name) wonders why Doctor is so sad. She realises it's about a woman and she asks him who she was. The Doctor doesn't really answer. After that Nardole tells her that her name was River Song and something little about their relationship. In the same episode Nardole is annoyed by the Doctor how he enjoys the feeling of danger and that way deals with the grief of losing River. Nardole says to the Doctor: "I know you miss her but can't you just write a poem or something?". Later in the series, to the audience is shown how Nardole came to travel with the Doctor. And as it turns out, River send Nardole to take care of the Doctor after she would be gone. And maybe my favourie reference is when the Doctor is having an argument with Clara he says: "I lived among otters once for a month,... well sulked. River and I, we had this big fight". I would love to hear that story... How did the fight end with the Doctor sulking among otters for a month XD. Where was the TARDIS. Did River get it? XD

Really enjoyed your responses to Dr Who. I'm English and since I was a kid in the 1970s I have been watching Dr Who. If you were to watch an episode for each Doctor, my recommendations would be: 1, An Unearthly Child; 2, Tomb of the Cybermen; 3, Carnival of Monsters; 4, Robots of Death; 5, Caves of Androzani; 6, Revelation of the Daleks; 7, Ghost Light; 8 - there's only the TV movie; 9, The Empty Child,; 10, Blink; 11, The Doctor's Wife; 12, Heaven Scent; 13, Demons of the Punjab. But, just opinion of course 🙂

I love River Song and I think that this is what a lovestory for the Doctor should look like (if there has to be one.) And Alex Kingston (the actress) said: "I always wanted to be Ellen Ripley and this is probably the closest I will ever get." I think she is at least as cool.

Please react to a Doctor and Rose edit. I've noticed that she's the only companion she haven't really reacted to, which is understandable as she was only in 2-3 seasons, but she was the first companion and epic love interest for the TV shows doctor.

I've been telling myself I need to watch this arc through from River's POV some time. The most inconvenient part is that some episodes feature her at multiple points in her life (e.g. one two-parter has three of her present). So this video was a nice primer. I know I've ragged on River's arc before, but I think that's more to do with how it connects to the larger arc of Eleven's Era, because holy sh*t did that get unsatisfying by the end. But mostly divorced from its broader context this video made me appreciate the time-traveling-couple-meeting-in-the-wrong-order aspect again.

This will make no sense to you without context. Also wish they didn't shove the diary of River Song stuff in from Big Finish. Its expanded universe stuff which I'm usually OK with but in this case it takes away from the fact that Tennant is the first Doctor to meet her.
@aloysiuswhiteboat29342 жыл бұрын
It really doesn't take away from that at all. And River is written ten times better under anyone but Moffat.

@@aloysiuswhiteboat2934 "You're younger than I've ever seen you" Maybe I'm a stickler for continuity but its obvious Tennant is intended to be their first meeting. If they want to write River stories fair enough, just have Tennant or Smith audios with her in. I feel like using older doctors is just some gimmick.
