TRANSCRIPT
Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is for those of you who will be taking the TOEFL test. And, as usual, when I do a lesson about the English tests, I will speak at a more natural pace, a little bit faster than usual. If you're a beginner, don't worry, you can still listen and still practice your listening skills, and get some vocabulary from the lesson. But it will be a little bit faster, perhaps a little bit more difficult. Let's begin.
So, we're looking at the TOEFL task 1, the writing section. This is the integrated task. I'll put it this way. Now, what does that mean by "integrated"? It means they're giving you... Giving you a reading section, they're giving you a listening section, and they're wanting you to write. So you're practicing three skills in one task. Okay? Not easy, but not that difficult if you practice it. So I'm going to give you four tips on how to approach this section of the test.
Now, for those of you who have done the practice test, or have taken an actual TOEFL test, or are preparing for one, you know that what will happen is you will be given a reading section-okay?-you will be given three minutes to read it and prepare whatever notes you need, then... This will be on the computer screen. Then it will disappear, then you will hear a lecture that is related somehow to what you read. That will go on for about a minute or two, and then it will stop. Then, you will be given the question. Basically, the question is going to tell you how to relate the listening to the reading. Okay? It is crucial that you take notes, both for the reading and the listening. You can't try to keep all of this in your head. It will not help you when you... When you have to start writing. You will have 20 minutes to write. You should aim for about 200 words, let's say. That should be enough to convey all of the information that they're asking. What you have to remember is right away, they're...
You're going to have to do one of two things. You're either going to have to counter. You have to show how the listening, the lecture counters or goes against what was written in the passage, or how the listening supports what was written in the passage. Okay? It's going to be one of those two things. So, as soon as the listening starts, you have to understand right away: Are you going to be countering? Are you going to be supporting? You don't need to wait for the question. It should be very obvious to you, as soon as the lecturer starts to give the lecture: What is he doing, or what is she doing? Is she going against the reading, or is she giving support to the reading? Or is she giving information that draws on information from here that they work together? So counter or support, identify it right away, and then you know how to set up your notes.
So, here, I showed you a very basic way of taking your notes. Take out with the reading first, obviously, you're going to have three minutes. Skim the reading. What does that mean? It means look through it pretty quickly. Don't read every word; you don't need to. Although the reading disappears from the screen, it does come back. When the listening is finished and they give you your question and the timer starts, the reading comes back. If you need to go back and get some more information, you can do that. It's there. So, of course, that means you have to concentrate very hard on the listening. You only hear it once, it doesn't come back. If you didn't get any information, you're out of luck.
So, set up your notes like this. Put your reading here. Make sure you get your first point with the example, your second point with the example, your third point with the example. Okay? Once this is set up, the listening becomes easier, because now you're just going to be matching points. So this point, what was said for that point? What was said for this point is going to be said here. What was said for this point is going to be said here. Usually, there will be no more than three. Sometimes it'll just be two. Rarely will you have four, but usually three is the right number. So, look for three points here with their examples, look for... Listen for the three points here that basically correspond.

The passage states that.... The lecturer counters/supports this by saying... point 1 & ex.1 point 2 & ex.2 point 3 & ex.3 _________________ take note!(both reading and listening) The moment the listening begins, you've gotta find whether the lecturer counters or supports the ideas given in the passage. 3 mins or so VS 1or 2 mins 3ex is normal. usually 2 e.x. rarely 4 ex. Indeed, you explain this lesson well. The template you share with your students will help them to create a coherently organized response to the integrated writing task by encouraging them to combine the most important points in the reading with the most important points in the listening. This week at California State University, San Bernardino I will give my TOEFL prep students an integrated writing practice test, so I will have them watch this video before they complete this assignment. Thanks again for sharing.

If it goes for this video, it would go like this The lecturer insists that writing in Toefl should be based on the summary of lecture and followed by the appropriate structure of the passage. First, it's important to take a note of information to summarize the claim of the author.This gives the accurate way of distinguishing if the author supports or counters. Also, it provides the bottom line of lecture and the details as well. Furthermore, the improper pronoun should be avoided because it's written to convey the claim of lecture, not to make a conclusion or express an opinion.For example, 'my, 'me', and' I'' can be the ones, which are not suitable to be used. Lastly, writing the passage in accordance with the logical structure of the passage is pivotal. This makes it easier to understand the intention of the author and grasp the overall writing. For instances, it should contain the introduction,which summarizes the writing in short , and bodies to support the idea.

I couldn't practice writing at all, not even once, because I didn't have any time left. I think if I had practiced I would've scored better. I did well on the independent task but I did 'fair'on the integrated task. I didn't handle time well.

This is an awesome video. I'm going to direct my students here. They're always trying to get higher scores. I've made some listening practice videos for them. I'm trying to improve their general knowledge at the same time as improve their English. They can use that knowledge in all four sections. The more you know, the easier it is to guess in the listening and reading, and the easier it is to speak and write. You can never have enough general knowledge.

Firstly, I want to express my gratitude for your channel, which has been instrumental in aiding my English skills for the TOEFL test. However, I feel compelled to share my recent experience with the home edition. I took the test yesterday, and it was by far the most challenging experience I've encountered. I strongly advise my friends and fellow test-takers: if there's a test center available in your city, opt for that and avoid the home edition. My test stretched over 5 hours without any break, plagued by numerous technical glitches. Getting assistance from proctors or technicians took several minutes each time, and at one point, a transition from a proctor to a technician took an excruciating 30 minutes. The check-in process itself was troublesome; I waited for 30 minutes initially, and only after directly contacting support did my test start, delayed by a full hour. It was a disheartening and frustrating experience that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.

Hi Adam, I have a question. In the first part of the writing of Toefl, I mean the integrated one, the questions start generally by asking to summarize the points made by lecturer. However, the templates (as far as I encountered in web) are usually starting the answers by explaining firstly the reader points, and then keeping on how the lecturer casts doubt on the points that made in the reading. let me give an example. some of these templates start body paragraphs like this: 1-First of all, the author states that.... (READİNG) 2-"However, the lecturer cast doubt on it", or "Nevertheless, the professor refutes this idea by stating that..." (LECTURE) what is your position? should we start the body paragraphs with ideas in the article even though the question expects us to start with the views of lecturer? Thanks

Hello , is it necessary that the lecture always supports the passage or always counters it in all the 3 points let’s say ? Or it may be that he supports in one point and counters in another ?

Thank you Mr. Adam. I had no idea about how to write writing task 1 in the TOEFL test before I watched your video. Now I know how to do this. Several months ago I took the IELTS test and I was quite confused between the TOEFL and IELTS test structure and doing strategies. I'm going to prepare my TOEFL test by watching your videos on the youtube channel because I need to be ready for the test in 10 days.

I have 2 questions: Is there any practice for writing and speaking? (I am asking particularly for these two because I know about practices for listening and reading in the official TOEFL website) Do I need to have a proper introduction (without my claim and reason) and conclusion?
@johannarodriguez3573
@johannarodriguez3573 4 жыл бұрын
Would it be wrong to have a conclusion anyway? I saw another teacher advising it. She also said that the listening ALWAYS counters the reading... Now I'm not sure x) This was the structure she gave: To sum up, this is how the listening passage causes doubts on the point made in the reading passage. Thank you Adam!!!

If this is how the Writing section of the TOEFL test is setup nowadays, then this test is BS. No human is capable of multitasking in a stressful environment. Somehow it seems TOEFL has become a mockery.

I am SICK of TOEFL. I really feel they are playing games. After 7 tests I still can't get a passing score. One test I get all of the passing scores I need except for in reading. The test after that I get all of the passing scores except for speaking. Every test its like that. I feel they are inconsistent. It is beneficial for them for me to keep failing because its more money in their pockets. I'm sick of it and I find so many other people with the same stories. I'm seriously looking at considering my legal options here. I want to know that if they done an investigation if they would find a certain degree of fraud and inconsistency in the way they grade.

hi mr. adam ☺ iam one of your subscriber and I found your videos very helpful. next month iam scheduled to take academic exam. i have a question, is it ok to use all caps during ielts test? I know it is important to use capitalization especially for proper noun , starting a paragaph and etc. but Iam not use to it ,writing using small letters makes my penmanship difficult to read. are they strict about all caps ? thanks , have a nice day

hello i would like to share this with you and please give me your comments the reading passage promotes that the business companies who follow the groups approach to achieve their projects was done in a scussful way, while the professor counters that by saying many points such as not all the group members will participate, team can take more time, and one in-optimistic member can drop out/off the projects. The passage suggests by having more than one member who works together they will have more knowledge and experiences. In contrary, the professor says by grouping the employees to work together as a team some of them did not collaborate and get a free ride as the professor mentions. While the reading passage states the benefits of forming groups to finish the company projects in an efficent way by distributing the tasks on the group members so they can finish on time and achieve all the work in less time. the professors oppose that by giving an example of a group who takes a lot of time just to plan and set an agreement and that takes more time than individuals work. the passage states that if the project has more than one person to finish in that way people will have more courage to take a risky decision because no one will be abused. on the other hand, the professor says that if we follow this approach it could lead the project to fail by one pessimistic opinion who said "this will not work"
