A video like this for Gyokko Ryu would be awesome if you had the time to make it. I have always found jumonji no kamae in particular to be strange and unique compared to other martial arts' postures, yet no one really seems to explain its history, intention, or specific applications.

Absolutely, I'll do a video and be certain to tag you on it. Hope that helps. It's actually quite interesting when you see how relevant and practical it is, makes very, very good sense. Give me a couple of days. Cheers ~ Adam

Ichimonji, What is the reasoning behind leaning so far back that 90% of your weight has locked the rear leg. Where do you go from here after, say a punch?

Yeah, it's a good (and common) question. As I learned this, of course I asked the same; it's an insane posture to stand in if you are looking through the lens of fighting ... but that's not what this is, it's not offensive, preemptive h2h ... rather, as I learned it, this tradition stems from many circumstances within escape ... it's a bit beyond the scope of a KZbin comment, however I can assure you that the historical documents of the art go into great depth on varying environmental, situational, topographical, etc. variations one would need to move quickly and safely through. The following movement from this kamae are 'usually' a leap or a drop, NOT a punk or kick, thus the deep stance mandates a need for powerful hip, generous rangeo of motion and necessity for strong dexterity to move in and out of such a crouched, low stance ... consider a cat's body as it readies to pounce (or leap away), kinda the same. Again, there is more to it, beyond this comment, (ie. why bladed so shaprly, why a straight arm, etc.) but for the scope of your question, it should be considered a method of aligning the intention with the physical body and training within the constraints of the posture and circumstance for the studied form it leads toward. I hope this helped with your question.

You're not serieus with your shuko and your hakama ?

Pauvre gars !

Thank you for the comment jeanfrancois. Yes, I am serious with what I teach.
