Togashi is really something else. Normally changes to a power system leave a bad taste in the mouth wether it is because it is inconsistent to previous facts or changes the feel of the story too much. And that is even in the cases where it is understandable because the story needed some additional depth to explore. This is both consistent with previous facts, doesn’t change the feeling of the story, adds a world of depth both to events in the past and in the future… and the story didn’t even need it! The Nen system was deep enough as it was! Togashi is really something else.

I think is because this fells more like a refinement rather than a change, you have one natural affinity, but there always been room to dip and lean in adjacent directions, from there to say that your affinity leans a bit on either, kind of makes sense, you can lean very little like 2%, to a full 50%, really think the most common would be to have characters lean to either adjacent one by a 10-20%, with 100% pure and splits being equally rare cases so you still have all the previous simplified system working, you can check main affinity with the water test, that gives you a initial guidance, but then you have more granularity within the system
@Vendavalez2 жыл бұрын
@@night2501 oh, for sure, but I think that even adjustments and refinements can have the effect I described. For example One piece with Haki. Or so I feel anyway.

Netero being a pure Enhancer and his Hatsu being a creation of his weakest affinities is 100% spot-on for his character. Remember how, during the Election arc, it's stated that Netero intentionally makes things more difficult for himself, the example being Netero's choice of Pariston as his right hand man. There is no way that Netero would ever play to his strengths when it comes to Nen. That would be too simple and easy for him. Concerning Meruem and emission, think about how his aura manifests itself. Even unconsciously, those who encounter him can all but drop dead on the spot. Also how dare rip on Emitters! Zeno and Silva kick ass. At 11:23 by the way, you call them Transmuters instead of Emitters.
@Footballazz Жыл бұрын
considering Netero was so OP with an ability that used the two Nen Categories furthest from his natural affinity, how strong would a purely enhancer Technique from Netero actually be? The 100-type was so fast and powerful it was able to blitz the King and damage him (albeit not that much) which is something we suspect no other human probably could have done. The only reason the king was able to win was because of his superior durability and intellect which far surpasses any human. It makes me wonder what a pure enhancer attack from Netero could have done. Of course he probably still loses to the King eventually, but I suspect he would have done much more damage. That being said, it’s crazy how Netero was so much better than every other human that he didn’t even need an attack from his own nen category to be considered the most powerful 🤣🤣🤣 just goat tings

Crazy idea but yeah, being a pure Enhancer COULD make you the best at using unfriendly affinities. Considering what his ability was, it's not so hard to imagine he could do it with 40% either. All he did was make a statue and then move it with preprogrammed Reponses using his own hand movements as an input system. We see actual conjures make more complex things with special powers (his statue couldn't do anything in the same vein Kurapika's chains, knov's smoke, or Knuckle's IRS) and we see actual manipulators able to exert more control over their targets with more flexibility even. Heck most use phones, game consoles, or just words to input commands and all of those have more room for complex commands at the touch of a button. However, as a 100% enhancer he could enhance his statue's toughness and smack power to the point all those weak points don't matter. Who cares if his controls are preprogrammed and stagnant if it moves too fast for you to block or dodge and hits hard enough to throw you kilometer away.
@fabrizioart19282 жыл бұрын
@@aaaron192 you're probably right on the creation and functionality of the ability, though I think it doesn't necessarily make my point baseless. Especially because even if the ability is straightforward, its actual use by Netero is insane, because he conjures and dispels the whole thing near-instantly for every single attack AND seemingly looses no significant amount of aura after thousands of uses. He only became tired in any regard after Zero Hand, which by default uses everything you have and also was more efficient aura use with the actual damage dealt by Emission. Tl; dr- yeah, you can create that ability with 40% in needed affinities, but using it like Netero MIGHT take some form of "limit breaking" in the terms I expressed, and it also makes thematic sense imo.

Netero also had to spend years upon years in prayer and devotion to learn the 100 type guan yin bodhisattva, which undoubtedly added to its power. I think this actually simplifies the nen system, because it makes things clearer that a lot of abilities dip heavily into neighboring types to work properly. There's less guessing as to what exactly something is because things that combine two parts are easier to pinpoint. Edit: Meruem being an emitter is somewhat of a surprise, but also not a huge surprise because he really did not use Nen for anything other than the absolute basics. Edit2: Abengane being an ultimate conjurer makes perfect sense, because he manifests the curses into a physical form that he has to live with instead of affecting his own body.

Just want to make some comments 1. It seems like rather than when someone is placed between 2 types it means "you can use 50% Transmutation and 50% Enhancement", its actually "you can learn Enhancement rather easily", but your own percentage isn't changing. So for example Killua is Transmutation-Enhancement, meaning that he has easier time picking up Enhancement compared to pure Transmuter, but his affinity percentage for Transmutation and Enhancement did not change and are still 100% Transmutation and 80% Enhancement. When it is explained that one's can "change their type", it doesn't mean if you're Transmutation-Enhancement but you train Enhancement only, you'll become Enhancement, its just mean that maybe if Killua train Enhancement more than Transmutation, his placement in the diagram would more leaning towards Enhancement (so instead of 50%, it became 60% or 70%, which mean he has even easier time doing Enhancement than ever before, but the conventional percentage is still applied with 100% Transmutation and 80% Enhancement). If this diagram created when Togashi finished Greed Island or even Chimera ant, then it would explain why Gon is pure Enhancer. In Greed Island, Bisky mentioned that Gon is Enhancer that lean towards Emission, but since he practice Enhancement more than Emission (on top of the Transformation may did something too), then he became pure Enhancer, which is make sense 2. I actually have problem with some of these characters placement within the diagram. Ikalgo, Knov, Silva, Zeno, Knuckle, and to some degree probably Meruem. But honestly, the basic idea and most of the characters placement are spot on imo

I have a theory of nen-based relationship compatibility: someone is compatible for a fated relationship with someone of an adjacent category or an opposite category. I panicked for a second when you said Meruem’s affinity had been revealed/changed, but him being an emitter doesn’t disprove my theory. According to this theory, Leorio + Gon + Killua + Kurapika is the perfect friend group because they make a loop on the hexagon following the adjacent/opposite rule. Juicy new info, great! To be honest I can't wrap my mind on the King be an Emitter (or an Enhancer), I mean the only actual hatsu we saw him performe was the ability to physically consume the flesh of a Nen user and inherit their aura and hatsu. The only cases we know (until now) of meta-ability on Hatsu are all about specialists so I always given by default he was a Specialist too due the fact that a non-specialist has 0% Affinity on Specialist ability. So it's weird unless the 0% is like a semplification and it's really "something like 0%" so a being with an huge amount of Aura like Meruem and the Royal Guards in generals could simply brute force that area too with some heavy restriction or such (for example the need of actually eat someone else is a quite decent restriction)

The description for Gon's nen that I remember is that he has basically been reset to zero before he ever learned nen, so he's going to have to start over from the beginning. And given that it's implied there's going to be about 3 years of in-universe hiatus before we get back to Gon and Killua, he's probably going to be even better with a better ability when he does return. Personally, I'm hoping that Gon brings back his iconic fishing rod and integrates that into part of his hatsu, and has an all new hatsu that's much more thought out than his original.
@JimmyCrackorn2 жыл бұрын
7:30, I'm a bit more flexible in my thinking on this revelation. I think that Togashi is doing it as an example of higher education. When we look at the Chimera Ant Arc, we have to understand that we were on an adventure with *rookies.* Those instructing them taught them at their then level, not at the more advanced level; we got the bare basics. Kurapika gave us a glimpse of what was to come with his particular abilities, which he went on a discovery mission on his own for. He was the first clue from the beginning. When his Scarlet Eyes activate, he becomes a Specialist. Because he's telling the story as if we're witnesses to the development of our protagonists, he has to keep us ignorant of certain higher level stuff. Bear in mind that there's very much discovery occurring in this series. As they progress, they earn greater exposure to more advanced Nen users. Those users can then impute wisdom, teach philosophies behind their combat arts, and share information that they happened upon during their time as Hunters. Our protagonists are now reaching into the _collegiate_ level, if you will. With that, they're carrying us along too. We're on the adventure with them, so we're learning with them too. I don't consider this an alteration or retcon, but an *enhancement* of the information that we already had. We're now ready to dive into it. Artists like authors often trick readers into believing things that they never actually stated. This is important to understanding our diabolical minds. Was it the narrator, or was it a character who said it? Also, who is the narrator? If the narrator isn't the author, can the narrator be wrong? Is the narrator deceiving us? Did we make assumptions based on loose interpretations of what the narrator actually said? See? It's a mind game. I use these techniques myself in a series that I've set for release as a rudimentary web toon in 2023. We do this to intentionally cause controversy, spark intense debate, and consequently spike the popularity of our work. The more people argue about it, the more people are going to read - AND - the more they'll drag others into it to confirm their biases. This is how we make a franchise truly great. Example: Gohan was stated to have the *most potential* in Dragon Ball. But does that also make him the most powerful? That was the question that we were essentially asked at the end of the Cell Games arc of the Cyborg Saga. Answer: No. It only means that he *could be* the strongest *some day.* It's up to Gohan to make that happen, not the author, not the reader / viewer, not the villains, not his allies, and not his family. Gohan isn't the strongest because he doesn't want to be, and Beast Gohan doesn't count yet because that's a future event, not a present event. The only retcons involving Gohan stemmed from including him when Toriyama actually didn't want to (Super Hero is a perfect example; it was originally purely a Piccolo feature, but the producers pressured him to add Gohan for the fans). This is why a lot of situations involving Gohan don't actually make sense; they seem like he pulled them from where the sun doesn't shine. That's because he did. He had already written the narrative, then had to alter it to include a character that he didn't initially plan to use. Anyway, that's an example of how outside perspective can ruin what an author has in mind, and how we play these mind games with our supporters. Had the fans and rest of the project team just let the artist work, things might have panned out differently and better. Maybe we would've seen Gohan organically become the most powerful after a life changing event made a strong enough impression. For Hunter x Hunter, Togashi has a lot more control over the narrative and the characters. He basically tunes us out. So, I believe that he's forcing us to learn at a slower rate so as to build a much stronger bond and understanding of the world. This is what I call the wondrous experience angle, and seeing it expertly at play is exciting. There's a certain magic to these revelations as our minds expand to grasp what he's pitching at us. We're having a lot of, "Ohhhhh! So, *THAT'S* how it works," moments. This is exactly how to go about giving impressions, then subverting them. We made it work in our own minds a certain way, but nothing breaks when he tells us how it actually works. It all fits together like a cleverly designed puzzle.

Your affinity is just more what comes naturally to you. Probably why this personality test of Hisoka is so accurate. Nen has always been tied to what you want and value in life or how life shaped you. Interesting that Meruem is an emitter. I remember a theory back in the day that Pokkle reincarnated into Meruem and I did not really think much of it then but was reminded of it now. Interesting that they are both emitters!

Togashis greatest strength and weakness is that he fleshes things out in an extremely detailed way. The original series lined up a pretty straightforward story with four main characters. Them after the hunter exams he was like nah then split them into three separate paths. He introduces and mentions characters that you know will show up but when is really anyone’s guess. This series has so much potential and sadly it makes me think it might never get a proper ending the way he’s planning it out.

Is leaning towards a secondary Nen type such a new concept? I seem to recall Biscuit saying that Gon was an Enhancer leaning towards Emission as early as the Greed Island arc. (Chapter 148)

Togashi seems to be much more interested in advance and discuss Nen concepts than tell the story of the many HxH so-called protagonists. In each saga he just picks the characters more fit to address the Nen aspects he came up with.

I wonder if since gon has lost his nen once he regains it he might get a dual nen type or maybe even some pseudo post partum nen

11:23 you said genius transmutter but in the image they appear near Leorio and Meruem, at emission.

I dont find it odd that they ranked Abengane as ultimate since i have this vague memory of the phantom troupe saying how rare it was to eliminate nen, and how hard Chrollo had to look for someone like him. To me eliminating a nen ability like that could easily be considered top notch or the pinnacle of what his nen branch could do

It's not simply that he is the best Nen exorcist, it's also the fact that his use of exorcism is so masterful that he does not directly suffer the consequences of whatever he exorcises. The exorcist from the hunter association likely have to bear the cost herself to remove the curses, but Abengane would likely have survived removing the super curse, although the men beast created would have been something ridiculous and possibly horrifying.

I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I swear to you for the past two years I've been a Hunter X Hunter fan I've had nothing but time to stew on the intricacies of nen and I KNEW togashi had deeper details of nen that he had either yet to reveal or didn't showcase in full. Looking at all the nen users of the series it became apparent that some users had more affinity for one type adjacent than others, and you could tell which one it was before even seeing their abilities based on hisoka's test. Togashi truly does never fail to amaze. Personally I don't think the rabbit hole ends here, far from it, but you have NO idea how cathartic it was to see a theory that no one else would care enough to pay attention to prove to be true. Baby steps, baby steps.

11:25 Zeno and Silver are shown to be emitter yet he still says Transmuter
@46corazon2 жыл бұрын
Zeno and Silva being emitters *made more sense too.. Like transmutation is applying the properties of certain matter to your nen by experiencing it. Funny to think that young Hisoka ate so much gum, he became one of the strongest nen fighters in the series.
@timhertens85022 жыл бұрын
@@46corazon I also thought that being transmuters fits them better but it’s shown that Zenos abilities involve a lot of emission, he also used a basic emission technique in his fight with chrollo outside from his techniques, Silva basically throws two big nen balls so it kinda makes sense
@46corazon2 жыл бұрын
@@timhertens8502 yeah like if they were transmuters though, did they got shot by energy dragon blasts multiple times in training. lol that's what I asked back then.

I feel like this video just scratched the surface with this information. Another video on this topic would be very interesting
