That's how it's done,boys and girls. This is your pedal steel lesson for today. You can do it too.....all it takes is talent and dedication up the wazoo, and about 4 million hours of practice. There is no shortcut, and you can't do it from your Iphone, if you're gonna play like this, your gonna gave to earn it. Fantastic playing from two of the very finest.

I've been listening to Country and Western music since I was six or seven, We had a wind mill in the cow's pasture and there was a Night Spot called the Wagon Wheel where Robert Salinas used to play, I would climb to the top of the Wind Mill and listen to his steel guitar. I love Paul Franklin. I Love Vince Gill.

The steel guitar sound, to my ear, has a lot in common with the violin/fiddle in that when either is played well it will make "beautiful music." However, when played badly, either can drive you insane. These two players sound great to me... as does Vince Gill. His is a wonderful talent and, from what I've heard, he is a fine person as well.

Possibly the two greatest pedal steel artists of our generation. It seems that there are so few even wanting to learn this complex instrument, that it makes me wonder, if when these guys are gone, who will take their place? In an age of southern fried rock being marketed as country (and a piss-poor rehash, at that) the steel guitar is hardly ever heard anymore. It's time for country music to be music for adults again, not current crop of boozing, brawling over-aged juvenile delinquents.
@20gilbert2010 жыл бұрын
I agree. Paul Franklin must be a special kind of genius to be able to control such a technical instrument, and create such amazing beauty. I could listen to his music all day. However that shit kicking bar/country crap leaves me cold.
@brentrau679210 жыл бұрын
Mr. Franklin's stylings on the pedal steel remind me of the great Ralph Mooney, whose soundpowered all the counrty records from Capitol in the 50's and early to mid 60's.

Gil Mosko Ya got it exactly right Gil --- I consider myself a very good steel player --- it,s the control and beauty that he gets --- always looking for melody etc. When people make statements on the Forum , you have to consider the source --- people should make available samples of their playing --- that way we know wether the opinion is valid .

What you mean to say Is YOU like one style better. There really is no BETTER, they are both so good at what they do. I've heard Tommy play faster songs and with his speed racks he just rivals any steel player ever on THAT song. Its his style of picking. And Paul is the same way on the slower stuff he just plays killer combinations that are the absolute greatest. The are just different picking styles. You may like one better than the other but I assure you that doesnt make him BETTER than the other by any means....With that said, I personally liked what Paul played on this song better...:-)

@mikey12342210 жыл бұрын
***** You abviously cannot hear what I hear --- it,s not about difficulty ,its about beauty and putting the " hurt " on it --- Tommy goes off pitch quite a lot .There is a reason why Paul is the most " in-demand " session guy --- why he,s been called to play on so many records with the biggest artists ,ya,yhink .
@mikey12342210 жыл бұрын
***** As a matter of fact I can --- 30 years ago I built a pedal steel which always returned to " zero " [ after sharping / flatting /sharping etc. ] never failed , you see if you separate those functions by flatting at the left end [ tuner end ] and sharping at the bridge end , there is no string " bounce " --- I designed an individually adjustable bridge [ no need for tempered tuning ] , and a mechanism to tension and fine tune each string [ 10 strings ] --- took approx. 2 years plus " tweeking " --- proof is available to anyone interested .

Paul's note choicing and suspenseful resolution to his bar slides and slants is very tasteful in my opinion. Steel guitar is a very expressive instrument in that it lends itself to conveying emotion through melody ,note choice ,phrasing and especially cadence far more than any other instrument when in the capable hands of a master such as Paul, Tommy, Buddy, Doug, Or Papa John….. Violin or Fiddle in the capable hands of a master would be a close second as far as lending itself to emotional expression through melody. Music doesn't always have to be so basic and predictable. Who the hell wants to hear the same style and technique and cliché's over and over again,only with a different musician preforming them? I DON'T………..I want to hear excellence and mastery,not mediocracy! If I want to hear Bullshit,I could just listen to all these new country artists on the radio today!…..NO THANKS

First of all I met Tommy at E T's Theatre in N ville, Tommy is the BEST ever heard only Second To Buddy Emmon's. I have met most all former and current greats, the guy who said Paul overplayed is right. Personally I don't thing it will ever be played better than Tom Brumley played it, Tom a true gentleman and one of the nicest people I ever met. Tom Brumley is also one of the most copied players going and others trying to outdo him about make me sick. Together Again will ALWAYS be Tom Brumleys song he invented it when there were not many pedal steels around
@mosrite6010 жыл бұрын
yeah, Tom Brumley's version cannot be superseded as he was the original. But Paul and Tommy take a back seat to anyone. Both superb players. But lets leave the Buckaroos alone. They were the ultimate dream team band in their prime. Now only memories
@ashscot5010 жыл бұрын
Nice to have agreement from someone with your experience, thanks packingten. I believe mosrite60 may mean "Paul and Tommy (don't) take a back seat to anyone" and I didn't suggest that; just that Paul Franklin's version is way over the top, like he was more interested in his own performance than that of the entire band.
@mosrite6010 жыл бұрын
Alan Harris sorry, yes you are correct. Paul and Tommy DON'T take a back seat to anyone. IMO Tom Brumley had a much softer touch to it. Of course, no one is going to knock Paul ot Tommy , but really, it is always difficult to out do the original in any great song, particularly a big hit as "Together" again. I seen Vince with Paul on Marty Stuart show RFD-TV where I thought Paul "stretched" it out too much. My opinion only. Gary Carter (Connie Smith) also superb player. mosrite60
@902Steeler7 жыл бұрын
I disagree about Paul being overplayed. Tommy and Paul are equally good with different technique. Tommy took a different path with playing on Grand Old Opry and Paul got into studio recording and playing with some key people such as Vince Gill so that's probably why you hear more about Paul than Tommy . I don't know Tommy at all but I assume that he is more of a private guy than Paul as well and likes where he is with his career. Both star players in my book and they both have they're own style.

These guys are all statures in this video. Paul has played behind Vince and the TJ's for awhile. For Vince to say Paul is one of the best ever, he has forgotten whatJohn Hughey did for him and Conway prior, and how he was the best steel player ever. John had his style, and stands tall against Lloyd Green, and Jeff Newman. This Bando invention wasn't there for the Bakersfield recording, but is supposed to be on this video. This is a video isn't new, the CD was recorded before the Bando wonder was put out. It looks to me like a gadget for the retail stores to make buck on, and for a player to toy with, then find his own playing with a good steel amp is what makes him a good steel player.
@TStillkickin210 жыл бұрын
Bert Wade.......If you think Vince Gill didn't, doesn't and will always love John Hughey....you know nothing about Vince Gill. I have seen him take 5 minutes during a show to acknowledge that John Hughey was THE BEST steel player ever. For him to say that Paul is one of the best ever.........does NOT SAY that John Hughey isn't THE BEST.
@Sluggo013 жыл бұрын
Tom Brumley is still the best on this...
@PensalemStudios10 жыл бұрын
to be honest with you guys, i think that paul's solo was a bit too much for this song, tommy's solo was so subtle and subtlety is all is needed, I'm not putting paul down at all, he is awesome, just check his playing with dire straits, but for him to outshine the opry in house steel player is just....hmm, tommy has provided steel for most of the artists in the opry in the last few years. lets big him up eh! much gratitude from UK
@alanharris628810 жыл бұрын
I don't know anything about the technicalities but for me the second solo by Paul Franklin is way overdone, an exercise in self-agrandisement, whereas the first solo by Tommy White is in tune with the rest of the musicians and the style in which Vince Gill sings the song.
@larrylarry57110 жыл бұрын
They are both great steel players but the reason for the difference in styles is that Paul is playing it in Bakersfield sound style. This is the style that Buck and Merle played in their bands and was popularized by one one the greatest steel players ever "Ralph Mooney" who played for Buck. When Buck hired Tom Brumley to replace Ralph who went to play for Waylon, Tom said" I can't play like Ralph" but he did adapt to the Bakersfield sound and did a great job. One other sound to listen for on Paul's playing is his range from lows to highs made possible by the the Franklin" brand steel that he playing as well as his talent. These were made by his dad and are no longer being made so when one comes up for sale it goes right away for 8k - 10K$. The Bakersfield sound is characterized by a bright sound of a fender tele or strat and is played with an up tempo beat. I have heard all three of these guys play in person at the International Steel Guitar convention and they are all outstanding.
@ashscot5010 жыл бұрын
Larry Larry Thanks for this explanation.
@nicholasdedring27139 жыл бұрын
Franklin's work on the whole Bakersfield record is astonishingly good, and this is no exception. It's (for me, as a marginal steel player with a day job), exciting to hear a guy who has made a career of being perfect, and understated, get to step out HARD on an album, and I'm going to guess that he was encouraged to be as big as he wanted, given his general sensibilities. I am a big of Tommy White, and am not knocking his work here or anywhere, but Paul Franklin is pretty well beyond reproach here, just in this humble nobody's opinion.
@ashscot509 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Dedring I've listened to this again and whilst I don't doubt that Paul technically is a superior player I share the views of PensalemStudios and packingten who both seem to agree with me that he is just trying to show off and actually I think it's quite poor to try to upstage the house musician at the Opry.
@MrPatdeeee9 жыл бұрын
+Alan Harris Amen and Amen and Amen. A case in study on "What is less is (often) more". Sadly the reverse is true. IE: Tom Brumley's version shook up the world of Steel guitar long ago on BO's incredible recording of "Together Again". Why destroy it with footwork; not to mention "bar antics"; even by some of the best. In a word, who could EVER equal or top Nat King Cole's unprecedented rendition of "Mona Lisa". And etc. Or Bing Crosby's "White Christmas". Or the "Cadillacs" with "Speedo? Or John Hughey's "Look at Us"? Or Bill Anderson's "Still"? Or Hank Snow's "Movin On"? Or Connie Smith's "Once a Day"? And so many others? Huh? Best to leave it alone and let the true "greats" rest in peace.
