Wrong wrong wrong. Never put a metal washer between the bolt and washer inside the tank! The big fat bolt head seals down on the rubber washer. Thats why the bolt is brass. That flimsy metal washer inside tank rust out less than year. Besides a metal to metal doesn't seal!

Pretty close on how to but you should never put the metal washer inside the tank, it will not only leak but it will rust also. Only the rubber washer should be used inside the tank.

Ivon is absolutely right, put a metal washer in the tank, and water will work between the bolt head and the metal washer to the threads, then work down the threads and drip. The bolt heads are large for this reason, so you don't need a washer. The manufacturer's instructions specifically state this is how you do it. Doesn't matter if it's brass, you can't tighten these bolts enough to deform brass, or the tank will crack.

Thanks for the video! However I do not think a metal washer should be placed between the head of the bolt and the rubber washer. Water can then go between the head and the washer to the center and leak or at least keep the bolt wet enough to rust and break. The rubber washer followed by a metal washer and nut on the underside agrees with directions I got from my Lasco 04-3675 Heavy Duty Toilet Tank Bolts! Again thanks for your video!

I've watched several videos on this and seen just as many opinions about using a metal washer inside the tank. Brass vs steel vs stainless doesn't matter because rust isn't really the issue. The problem is that you won't get a good seal between the bolt head and the metal washer because neither will deform enough when tightened. Water will run between the two metal surfaces and then down the bolt threads. I know this from experience because I just took my tank apart for the third time and this time I removed the 3 metal washers and eliminated the leaking. Bolt head on rubber on tank makes the best seal when you think about it. I looked and there are no metal washers inside the tanks of the other toilets in my house either.

Dam dude I know this is 9yrs old but I'm definitely glad I watched your video first because everyone else put the rubber washer on the very bottom and it makes no sense at all because water is not going to leak down there from the bowl it's just going to leak from the tank so rubber bushing in top of the tank and rubber washer on bottom of the tank makes more sense to me!

I use Rectorseal Teflon T plus 2 sealant on the bolts and washers, and have also put the metal washer between bolt and rubber and it does not ever leak. But yes, I understand doing the other way. And also you do not need the middle nuts, they can cause a problem if you have to cut the bolts. And better to use brass bolts and brass buts and brass washers.

apparently you folks have never heard of stainless steal....the stainless steal washer gives a more uniform flattening of the rubber washer creating a bigger seal area that just a bolt and a rubber washer.
@tomp71414 жыл бұрын
There should NOT be a metal washer under the head of the bolt. The head of the bolt seals against the rubber washer and the rubber washer seals against the tank porcelain. Putting a metal washer between the bolt head and the rubber washer creates a guaranteed leak path regardless of whether the metal washer is brass, steel or stainless steel.

Instructions on my bolt kit didn't say to put rubber washers against porcelain. I knew it was wrong and was happy to see this video verify that.
@fordummieslikeme75756 жыл бұрын
whodatzz this video was half right you do put the metal washer against the bottom of the tank touching directly to the porcelain you do not want rubber washers on both sides of the tank because it will shift if you lean back on the seat or wiggle the tank and because you don't over tighten it there's no fear of cracking just go hand tight than half a turn with a wrench.. however many instructions do call for a rubber washer on the very bottom on the final nut under the toilet itself not the tank.. but that's not as important it's just to prevent cracking because sometimes you have to tighten those a little more to seat the flush gasket evenly..

I replaced all that and the damn thing still leaks water into the bowl cause it to fill the tank needlessly....I don't get it.
@1030daman5 жыл бұрын
Michael Fries If there is water leaking into the bowl it is more than likely from the flapper and or water running from the hose into the fill spout you can turn the water down by putting a paperclip or some flush valves come with a little plastic piece that you can roll forward to slow the water down.
@michaelfries79695 жыл бұрын
@@1030daman I'll have to check the flapper I guess....that's all it could be. I thought it was from not tightening the tank down enough cause it's a little wobbly but no leaks on the outside but I need shims.
@1030daman5 жыл бұрын
Michael Fries if it’s leaking from the outside then yes you need to tighten them down a little bit as for the shim I use a water bottle cap or a 2 L bottle cap, if it sounds like it’s constantly running or it fills periodically then I would check the flapper?

@bretthall9335 жыл бұрын
Michael Clark Putting the metal washer against the head of the bolt is creating a potential leak path. Water can seep in between the underside of the bolt head and the metal washer since neither will deform enough to eliminate all gaps. Then the water will work its way down the threads. There should be no metal water inside the tank, only the bolt and the rubber washer.

Just did this job. When I removed the old there was no metal washer in the tank just rubber and it didn’t leak for 10 years. So I bought the new bolt kit put it back together same as I took the old apart. Didn’t use metal washer in tank. Well a day later it was leaking. So I put the metal washers in the tank and it’s still leaking. Going to a larger store tomorrow to see what other kits they have.
@Russell-rc6qq2 жыл бұрын
@@toby7291 The directions for these kits are unfortunately lacking. Metal washers are not to be used inside the tank as they will definitely result in leaking in addition to swiftly rusting. This is the way it should go back together: brass bolt goes through tank with a rubber washer inside the tank. Then on the outside of the tank apply another rubber washer directly beneath where the bolt comes out. Following this, on the secondary hole (if there is one), apply a metal washer and then tighten with an included nut. Tighten both ends accordingly being careful not to over tighten to the point the bolt compresses too tightly into the rubber washer. Please let me know how it turns out.
@toby72912 жыл бұрын
@@Russell-rc6qq Thanks I took it apart again before seeing your reply.. Inside just the rubber washer then on the outside metal washer and bolt. Didn’t tighten it as tight this time. So far so good.
