work bathroom, 2 toilets, 2 urinals, one sink. 5 drains in total, the sink and the urinals seem to have p-traps. the toilets dont, but i now see why. However almost each time, i enter this bathroom, the odor is really bad. I believe it is sewer gas coming from some where, my initial hunch is its the urinals. I tried flushing all drains, including, the urinals,, long press. didnt help.. perhaps some extra sealing is required?

Is there a floor drain? Typically there is. When’s the last time water was poured down the drain? The P-trap in the floor drain could be empty. It might be worth investigating

Moved into a house that was empty for some time. Our toilets are caulked and wet. Smoke test showed no leaks. Still stinks when we flush and sometime the shower stinks. Any ideas? Thanks

Dan Burkett That’s a unusual question. I’ve never cleaned a P-trap unless I have disassembled it. I don’t believe in using plumbing chemicals to clean drains. So to clean a toilet P-trap you would have to use a snake .They make a toilet snake that you could use to clean it out and scrape the walls of the P-trap.

If you have funky odors in the bathroom that you can’t get rid of. It might be coming from another drain or it could be coming from your floor if the floor is saturated from previous tenants. The floor would have to be removed or stain killed.

I just put in a new toilet, the smell around it is worse than when I had the drain open after removing my old toilet. I've chalked it. Chalked the flange bolts. and I can't figure it out. Only thing it could be is the wax ring, but it was about half an inch above the tile when I put the toilet down. It's level, solid, and no leaks. My old toilet had too much wax ring, actually pushed it into the drain about a quarter of the way and calcified it over 30 years. Is it possible it's just the smell of the silicon chalk and paint?

Well I think the silicone and the paint would be a different kind of odor. Wax rings are tricky you have to make sure it’s thick enough to make contact with the toilet. The new doughnut style non-wax rings work really well

Plumber redid the entire flange. Put the toilet in with a thick new wax ring. STILL, smelling like sewer gas all though not quite as bad. I don't know what to do. Should I use it for a few days and see if the smell reduces or goes away? Why isn't chalking the bottom of the toilet stopping the smell?

Hi. I had the city workers come around our neighbourhood doing smoke test in the sewer lines. I had smoke coming out of my toilet and I flushed it and water went everywhere. There was so much smoke in my bathroom coming from the toilet area I thought there was a fire. Do you have any recommendations. The guy said something abt a P trap. Thank you

Alex Gmail Just like everything in the world people argue about it. You don’t have to caulk it but if you smell sewer gas in the house it could be coming from that.It could still be leaking and ruining the plywood and you would still not know it. Until the floor buckles. Are usually only caulk them if it’s a rocker to help prevent the toilet from rocking on a crooked floor. It’s not a big deal either way

Caulking around the base of the toilet is not a good idea. Could cause you to miss a water leak until it's too late. The only reason to Caulk would be to slightly improve issues with the toilet not being secured to the floor ( ie if the toilet has some play at the base) if caulking for this reason, do not go around the entire base. Leave a gap at the front or back. If you smell something funky, don't solve it with caulking, check your wax ring.

We now use foam gaskets much friendlier to use no mess.iI always test a toilet for leaks typically flush it for a few days. Then I will caulk a toilet to prevent urine from getting under from sloppy men and boys using the bathroom. You can see a toilet leaking from the basement or crawl space if needed. it’s really nice to have the toilet secured to the floor with caulk to prevent it coming loose in the future.. It might be best to have a plumber install your toilet and then you will not have leaks. Good Plumbers will stand behind the toilet and warranty there workmanship. you don’t want to smell stinky urine under the toilet that is a smell that will not go away. And I’ve had phone calls from people that the toilet came loose and they want me to come back and fix it I will come back and I will caulk the toilet to the floor there typically large people who must like to rock on the toilet whether it’s intentional or not I don’t know but they work the toilet loose overtime This is a very controversial issue kind of reminds me of politics how divided everyone is on this

Another note a lot of toilet leaks would not come through at the floor level they would drip into the crawlspace or basement and you would never see it unless you inspect it from below.

Hi we are experiencing an odor in our bathroom of metal and dirt. We recently had the bathroom floor tile and concrete slab/tar paper removed along with bottom row of ceramic tile due to toilet leak. They did remediation and let toilet sit on the tiles taken off the wall. New waterproof cork floor put in and corroded cast iron flange was exposed for a week waiting for a new toilet. Old toilet sat in the tub. new toilet was half put in over a corroded cast iron flange. Only the bottom part was on because of missing parts for the toilet. A week later we found a better toilet. So guy took the toilet with missing parts off and installed the new Toto toilet but didn’t seal it to the floor. We don’t recall smelling this smell after water remediation when the subfloor was exposed. But after the new floor was in and flange exposed. We have called in a plumber who couldn’t really tell us anything. So the main things that happened were a new floor put in, bottom row of tiles pried off the wall and wall in still exposed with no tiles and then the toilet replaced. So metallic and dirt smell gets in our nostrils..could this be a sewer smell from exposed cast iron flange or is sewer smell only rotten egg like? Also shower and old toilet were not used for over two months sink used only occasionally. Or we thought maybe the tiles being off the wall with the tile dust. Or hopefully nothing weird in the new floor. I’m hoping you may recognize the metal and dirt smell and tie it to something as this smell is preventing me from living in the house. We have repeatedly put baking soda and vinegar down the sink and shower drain and it hasn’t helped. Thank you for any input.

Hard to say Really you could have a cracked pipe letting sewer gas in the wall or sub floor. What are your drain pipes of in house? Cast Iron? I assume?

Norte Racing yes if the toilet had no water in it. It could be coming from the sink or shower or tub if they dont have sealed drains & P-traps that are actively be used.

I believe that by caulking the seems in the toilet you will not see if you have water leaking from bad installation of the toilet. The best thing to do is to make sure that your wax seal is installed properly to avoid leaks and prevent gases from escaping. Bad installation of the wax ring is a cause of bad gases. Even if you caulk the toilet, gases escape through the hole where the closet bolts attach.

Exactly! Never caulk around the toilet. It traps leaked sewage under the base or the sewage leaks to the floor below. And you'd never know the wax ring failed. I've seen many rotted out wooden floors from this.

A wax ring can be leaking and water never come through the edge of the porcelain. That is not a good indicator of leakage I always check my toilets from the floor below. Or I make sure the toilet is flushed six times or more to ensure it is not leaking before it is caulked .

Not a plumber here, but I was taught to caulk the base but leave a gap at the back of the toilet - maybe a 2” gap. That way, leaking water still has a way to get out where you can see it. Plus, it looks better (at least in my opinion). It might minimize the amount of bad smell,but you’d want to know it’s there anyway so you can address the problem, right?

I agree most water leaks will follow the pipe down to the room below or the crawlspace. The flanges are not typically set up to bridge to the floor or water you do not need to see water come out from under the toilet. If it is leaking you will know from the room below or the basement. Otherwise caulking is the way to go although in most homes I do not see the toilets caulked to the floor

I think the best solution is to set the toilet and wait a couple days using the toilet as much as possible. Then caulk the toilet if it is not leaking after a couple of days in the bolts are snug it should never leak. Hence caulking it will not change anything

Yes I like to caulk the toilet. To stop movement. Sometimes the floors are unlevel and the caulk will help stop the toilet from rocking and work its way loose eventually. It also stops dirt from collecting around the edge it makes it easier to clean.

Well there are a lot of possibilities to age of the house the condition of the floor? Most common typically there will be a shower in the bathroom that is not being used or a bathtub? P-trap even a sink that is not being used? Is there water in the P-trap?

Unfortunately caulking is merely putting a bandaid on a gash, it will not stop sewer gas, you must change the wax ring, inspect the flange for any cracks, if the flange is good, put a new ring on there, if it is not floor level if it is below floor, may need 2 rings, put toilet back on, bolt it down, IF you do caulk, leave an open space behind the toilet so if you ever get a drainage leak, the water will come out and you'll know it so you can fix it sooner rather than later. Sorry bubba, but bad information.

Well not bad information just the one part about sewer gas. Toilet should be caulked for sanitary reasons prevents urine from getting under the toilet it also help secure the toilet to the floor so it does not move. So it is an important thing to do caulking a toilet. And I will continue to do so and all the toilets I install but now wax rings are a thing of the past. The new foam rings are so much better here is some good information if the ring is too low do not use 2 rings. use the thicker foam or you can extend the ring. I recommend using extension closet flange you can buy at a Hardware store or on line if you wish . Thank you for your feedback I always love constructive criticism it clears the air it makes everything more understandable for the community

Also one added note if a toilet leaks it would rarely come out the back of the toilet most likely the law of gravity it is going to drip down to the crawlspace or the basement or the first floor. I think the slot in the back of the toilet would only work if you were on a cement slab. Here in Michigan we do not have too many houses built on slabs. I think that’s more of a southern thing. Near the oceans and low water tables. So a little slit in the back would probably only work for a small percentage of homes

Most likely the floor contains the odor. Once the floor gets wet the odor is in the floor. You would have to dry the floor out and primer to seal the odor. have sewer gas coming from somewhere else? Do you have a bathtub or shower in the home that is not being used?

If you caulk your toilet to the floor, if their is a leak you'll never know until it rotts the wood floor underneath and c ceiling downstairs.

That is not the plumbers way. I know many licensed plumbers this is simply a misconception thought by many.. It is best to have the toilet caulked you could leave a little spot not caulked if you wish to let water out. Most of the time a small leak would never make it out from under the toilet anyways the water was simply drip down to the floor and never come out from under the toilet. It will stain the ceiling in the room below. You might need a better plumber to set your toilets set.The caulk will stop urine from getting under the fixture when kids & sleepy users are wreck-less.It also stops the toilet from coming loose Which it turn causes the leaks you may be talking about that rot floors.I have been installing toilets over 40 years
