As a child in the 1950s we had an outhouse. At night we used an enamel pail that my grandmother called a 'slop jar'. If you had to do anything except pee she became really angry. If we stayed the night with her, we learned to do our serious business before dark.

you've missed out , that from the time of the Normans , unlike the Tower of London , they used multiple cesspits in their Castles , and just maybe , they were using composting toilets . No he was actually Thomas Crapper, I kid you not, and according to Melvyn Bragg in his documentary series, The Adventure of English BBC 2003 this word, the verb 'to crap', came from Europe and actually was in use b4 flush toilets (which TC made bowls for). excellent series by Bragg which is also a book. It needs to be as so many words are explained it is totally enthralling. There are 6 one hr episodes which you can get entire as a Bit Torrent file if you want to download it, as I did. 5 stars!
