Emma, suggest you first dissolve the cornflour/starch in a bit of cold liquid (milk or water) to make a slurry, then add that into the pot with the boiling milk. No lumps this way. Sugar and flavoring can go in afterwards.

I used to think oats in Japan were super expensive (which they are from like Kaldi, Jupiter etcetera) but they're cheap if you get your butt down to Gyoumu super! Their prices on frozen fruit is unrivalled, too, met all my fruity needs that would have bankrupted me otherwise.

I would think it would be fine and would also add dimension to the apples and crumble, but maybe not for the custard - it may make it too sweet with brown sugar replacing all the refined sugar. I suppose it would be a matter of taste. Another option would be 1/2 brown 1/2 refined if you found the brown sugar replacement too sweet. What’s fun about these dishes is how you can play around by adding differing sweeteners, spices, fruits, grains (for example oats/wheat germ) etc. Thank you Emma for showing viewers simple and yummy ways to be creative.
