Awesome job on the tempera, Emma! It looked very professional, as if it was served up in a restaurant. The best thing about making it at home is using the ingredients you enjoy, so it's always perfect.

I’m an expat Aussie living in the USA and the other day I was craving Chocolate Ripple Cake. Found a recipe for Chocolate Ripple Biscuits and baked them - luckily I had all the ingredients and voila! Add whipped cream, brandy and vanilla and I was in quarantine heaven! I loved your tempura - didn’t realize it would be that easy so I think I’ll give it a try myself! Take care and stay safe! 🇦🇺

This video is exactly what I needed. Struggling with a migraine, super sensitive to bright light and loud noise. Sat eating dinner with sunglasses on and earphones in, needing something relaxing to listen to to drown out the family watchibg loud TV. Perfect t. Thanks Emma! I am so proud of you for learning to make your fave thing! I was really excited end of Febuary to try lotus root but the restaurant didn't have any! Pretty sure it was tempura too. Super disappointed. Now I know when all this is over I can hunt through my asian store for lotus root and tempura flour and copy you!

Love that you pronounce TEMPURA the correct way. I grew up in a Hawaiian Japanese house and that’s how I learned to say it. When I say it out loud people look at me weird. My last job I said it that way and someone started to correct me but another co-worker who is Japanese explained that I was saying it correct. Love your cooking segments since I cannot cook. Finally LOVE TGE HAIR! Keep the bangs long and to the sides- you look amazing! Nothing against your relationship but you’ve been looking great since Erick left.. hmmm? Lol

I am living in Sydney, and I love going to Japan for the food and culture! It is very inspiring watching Norm, Sharla, Chris and yourself taking the big step to live in Japan. Only if I was brave enough to take that step when I was younger! Thanks for sharing your life in Japan, makes me think that I am living there myself! Keep up your work!

Hello from Canada! Hay fabulous, just kickin' it with online uni courses and my own kitchen adventures. In the last 2 months, I've learned how to make slow cooker roast, bacon, chicken breast, and most importantly, steak!! I've been a scaredy cat about cooking meat for a long time, so this has been big. And I've made such tasty breakfast wraps that I'm way less tempted to order breakfast these days! Sweet breakfast things though... I want some fruity crispy French toast. That's the new mission. Thanks for the kitchen chat!

Oh man, tempura prawns are my JAM! That meal looked SO good Emma! Thanks for showing us how to make it ~ glad it was as tasty as it looked! I’m really pleased you have benefitted from the free time during this pandemic to work on yourself, that’s awesome. This video couldn’t have come at a better time because I am having a properly homesick-day today and it made me feel happy to see a familiar (albeit online and one-sided) face for a good ol’ chat! You’re always inspiring me to face new challenges relating to food and I really wanna give this a go. Isolation has made me grow stronger emotionally, I think...it seems like there’s been more time to breathe and collect thoughts if that makes sense, haha. Anyway yes! The leafiest leaf did indeed sound hella leafy! Sending love your way! ❤️

Wow, you did such a great, no, perfect job for first time. My initial attempts to make tempura didn't look nearly as good. (I later found out I was over-mixing the batter. Apparently it's better to barely mix it, or it doesn't come out fluffy and light).
@Kenmanhl4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, tempura batter is best if under-mixed or lumpy using chilled water. It's to stop gluten chains from forming so it stays light and crispy when fried instead of turning into unpuffed bread. Lucky Emma was using a "no skill needed" flour mix. I suspect that flour mix uses low gluten flour and starch.

Pro tip use club soda instead of ordinary water. Also think about maybe getting a cutting board that is big enough to go over your entire sink. It will give you more work space to cook. (it's a tiny house trick)

Tips for next time: 1) clean the oil, skim the tempura crumbs after each batch to keep the oil clean 2) use cold water 3) leave some small lumps in the batter for extra crispy bits. 4) for even more crisp, drizzle extra batter on top of frying items to build the a batter shell.

Soooo funny story. The other day I was craving a matcha latte and found a little pot of matcha from a takeaway from months ago. Whisked that into my almond milk and took a sip only to realise it was matcha salt from my local Japanese restaurants tempura 😑🤢😭 Cried inside then made another with non salty matcha. Oh how I wish I had taste tested it. Love from Melbourne 💖
