It’s good to know that every single one of these warlords are what they are, warlords. They all played a part in unification for Japan however they all did terrible things to unite Japan. Nobunaga did most of the heavy lifting, hideyoshi United Japan, but Tokugawa established peace. It’s so interesting to see their journey and how they’re shaped as people overtime.

Takeda Shingen will always be my favourite person from the period. I forgot where I saw it, but I once read something or saw a documentary (years ago mind you, so it's a bit blurry) about the Sengoku Jidai. And the one thing I remember from it was a quote that went something like: "Oda Nobunaga was more terrified of Takeda Shingen than he ever was of Imagawa Yoshimoto." I'd even go as far as to say that Takeda Shingen was the only external power that was an actual threat to Nobunaga.

There's a parable about the unifiers of Japan. Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Ieyasu Tokugawa. They are each given a caged bird and the winner would be the one who convinced the bird to sing first. Oda said "I'll kill the bird if it doesn't sing." Hideyoshi said "I would force the bird to sing". Ieyasu said "I will wait until the bird wishes to sing."

I like how he handled succession for his son. How he, unlike his two allies, managed to secure a lasting peace by gradually delegating his power to his son and retiring before he died. This is a move that is so rare in history, not just japan's, when an able ruler is put in the forefront. More often than not, the best rulers left the country in incompetent successors if not to a civil war. Another I like is the tale about the signing bird where all three unifier were asked what they would do if the bird wouldn't sing.

Even though it was necessary to pacify the war-torn world and create a peaceful country anyway, Tokugawa Ieyasu looked hundreds of years into the future and set up a modern bureaucracy and other systems. In fact, under the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Edo period was a peaceful period for more than 200 years, and the excellent bureaucracy of the Edo Shogunate and the authority of the emperor were very useful in managing the country when it transitioned to a modern state with the Meiji Restoration. Tokugawa created a peace and an order in Japan which was in the 150-years-long turmoil, so in that sense, he is one of the greatest heroes of Japanese history. But Tokugawa was a very conservative man. The first things that he did was restoration of an old feudal regime and physiocratic economy system, so his rule might have ruined the social reformation that Oda and Toyotomi tried to make. Especially Oda emphasized the monetary economy, which can be considered as the first step to capitalism, and urbanization. Toyotomi took over Oda's policies. If Toyotomi clan held rule, Japanese modern history might have been a very different thing.

After Akechi Mitsuhide assassinated Nobunaga, Ieyasu found himself behind enemy lines and hunted by the Akechi and was trying to get back to friendly territory hidden in a hay cart. Akechi soldiers were searching the area and an Akechi Samurai thrust his spear into the straw. The spear pierced Ieyasu's thigh. Not losing a moment, he grabbed a piece of cloth and wrapped it around the spear tip and when the Akechi samurai withdrew the spear, he wiped it clean of blood which would have otherwise revealed his presence in the straw pile. He had THAT level of composure.

Alicia Smith yes! The very first foreigner ever and retainer to Lord Oda Nobunaga. Yasuke was the first foreigner to ever achieve that status. Others eventually as well as time went on. They say this sort of is the basis of what Afro Samurai was created off of. I figured Legends would get a thrill covering him and how gallantly he fought and held off invaders. That stormed the castle while Nobunaga committed seppuku and how he defended his son Nobutada.

My opinion ist that, Tokugawa killed the old widow and the heir, because he they were the reasons, that Hideyoshi killed the adopted son who was originally the second son of Tokugawa. On the context of the christians, they were catholic christians and Tokugawa had an protestant (from England) in his employ and bestowed him the honor to be a samurai. He was an advisor of Tokugawa and it could have been a power play of that man against the portuguese.

Nah tokugawa is just hungry of power and took advantage of the situation when hideyori and yodo accidentally made ieyasu angry during the osaka bell. Which he theorized that the inscription of the bell proofs as putting a curse on him and also before that yodo and ieyasu have a very major political differences and beliefs. Yodo plotted to kill ieyasu because of his arrogance and also his demeanor after the sekigahara campaign.

There is another theory, this one suggest that the battle of Sekigahara Tokugawa Ieyasu actually died by an assassin pretending to be on Tokugawa side. A shadow warrior replaced him, it was say he look very like the Old Ieyasu. The reason for this is to prevent morale from dropping at the news of his death. It for this reason, the Uesugi clan hesitated to attack because they weren't sure if Tokugawa was dead.

He had a keen desire to learn about the rest of the world. Hence, his close relationship w the 1st white man to reach Japan, William Adams, whom he made an important member of his personal staff, naming him as Hatamoto and granting him the position of samurai. Adams also built ships for Tokagawa, which assisted in trade, thus strengthening Japan. It enabled Tokagawa to help build the shogonate that lasted 250yrs!

From what I read, the men that did the night attack on the Takeda after Mikatagahara weren't Ninja, but a band of the warriors and Ashigaru that had returned to the castle. Secondly, it seems those "ninja" that escorted Ieyasu after Oda's death may very well have been country bumpkin samurai of Iga instead. They fought off bandits until Ieyasu and his entourage could find a boat to cross a river. This may have been due to the Tokugawa aiding refugees from Iga after Nobunaga invaded their province. He left the Samurai on very good terms, viewing the heads of dead bandits and (iirc) paying them. It should be noted that the absorption of Takeda retainers aided Tokugawa in the future in making reforms in Kanto, as the former Shingen was a skilled administrator.
