All the natural light pouring into the first floor is saving electricity during the day. By not putting the interior walls back & removing a 2nd floor bedroom, the first floor flows & feels brighter & airy. I remembered one of your previous video before you started renovating, it was darker on the first floor. Well done!

Who turns on lights during daylight hours? I didn’t know that was a thing. 😅 While sunlight is free, air conditioning is not, so because the extra heat will also need to be cooled during the warmer months it’s a bit of a wash. Gorgeous though!

@@inggermanydeutschland3808: We can certainly see where your hot air goes! 😂 Never mind physics, what about literacy? I didn’t say anything about that. Regardless, unless there’s no insulation or roof at all, the hot air still accumulates inside and keeps it hot, which I “enjoyed” regularly living in California - “basic physics”, as they say. 😉👍

18:00 A bathroom on the second floor? That is so awesome. I've stayed at five or six homes in Japan, and none of them had a bathroom on the second floor. Having to schlep down to the first floor bathroom in the middle of the night was such a pain. Good work!

Beautiful work, love that you thought of recycling/reusing as much as you did, and using lots of actual wood so you can more easily maintain and refurbish as the years go by. I thought it was a bit funny on how much you focus on lots of light and natural elements- it feels like a very trademark Scandinavian thought process so your roots are definitely showing.

Actually, “oidaki” is to reheat the bathtub water, that is very useful when you are inside and it’s getting warm.

It looks great, I think most of your choices work well (it appears like you have good taste 😏). I like the idea of trying to salvage some elements from the old house so that it somehow lives on, but I wouldn't have thought there was a chance in hell one could make those pink tiles look good and yet I think you've pulled it off... black and pink (mauve?..) pair well. I would consider re-painting or replacing the bathtub with a black one though (unless you come across a real hinoki tub you can fit in there...) 👍

Anton, you have every right to be proud of the work you did on your home, it's beautiful, especially the stairs! You made me laugh when you spoke about the doors upstairs. When I was little my family and I lived in Japan for 4 years; my father was stationed at Tachikawa from 1957 to 1961. We had Shoji doors that my older brothers were always poking their fingers and hands through, they thought it was great fun! Poor Dad had to keep fixing them. I envy you being able to live there, I always wanted to go back but never had the opportunity.

Your house looks lovely! I love that you lowered the floor it makes the room look more bigger. And the natural wood are really much better, my friend has a house and they also used a lot of real wood and it’s so comfortable and warm. Maybe you should turn this into a business. Renovate Akiya houses and sell or rent them. You have a nice taste.

Great house and tour Anton! I don’t always stick around for the renovation process but love seeing the finished results. I am not a big fan of the pink tiles in the bathroom though. Probably because my bathroom has the same ones. An older lady used to live here. I hate them and want to get rid of them someday. Also off topic, I can’t believe believe after four and a half years I am almost done the Duolingo Swedish Tree. I study more than just Swedish so that’s why it took longer. Lycka Till!

Great project, love the passion you show and how you combine elements from different countries in a good way. A few question: 1) No blackout curtains? 2) Can't you hide the washer behind a cabinet door? 3) will you rent this out mostly or use mostly for yourself to live?

Good job, man 👍 I also live in Japan and I bought a house with a small front yard, few months ago and I love DIY, as you said: let’s make it cool again! 😊 I built a wooden deck and fence around my house and my neighbors are saying: すごい every time when I do something outside of my house. It’s not very common for ordinary guys here to build something in their own house. They always call professionals to do the job… Ones again good job and good luck with your next project.

It turned out amazing and I like how the two stiles merge perfectly together, like it has been all the time this way or allways was planned to be like this. It reminds me of my first impression of Japan in 2008 visit, that Japan is crazy combination of extremely old tradition and extremely modern lifestyle. This house turned out to be the embodiment of Japan itself.

I really love the japanese/scandinavian style. I'm Norwegian and im currently saving all the money I can. In a few months I'll start studying japanese at uni. My dream is to eventually be able to work in Japan, buy an Akiya and renovate it. It all seems very difficult and a bit scary, but looking at your videos and getting valuable insight it seems a bit more possible.
