The impassive look on the Japanese police officer's face as the Tokyo player slides limply down the track is brilliant. The interplay and audio work between the coaches, medics, marshalls and sound fx of the skater's movements on their environment really 'sells' the idea that this is real. Whatta film. 45 years on and it's still watchable is quite the achievement.

I love how you can see the filming lights reflected in every helmet. Dumb observations aside, this still remains one of the most underrated films of all time. How the editing didn't get more notice is beyond me. Fast paced, brutal, essential film.

I was 15 when I saw the original theatrical release. It was a bit shocking in 1975. I think most people at the time were unsure of what to make of the jarring combination of circular stadiums filled with roaring crowds, corporate anthems, overt violence (both in and out of the arena), bucolic countrysides and decadent parties for the privileged, and of the final 'last man standing' sequence. There was sort of a nervous laughter at the conclusion of the burning trees scene and a kind of solemn silence after the film's ending. I know it made quite an impression on me.

The lack of music really creates a weird atmosphere. Without a bombastic score, the action seems so cold and matter of fact. Chilling.
@ardiekepoo7442 жыл бұрын
A soundtrack would enhance the action scenes, but this movie was perfect without one... the uninterrupted sounds of the grunting, gasps, yelling, squeaks, rumbling of the motorbikes, roar of the crowds, the shot of the cannon firing the rollerball, the dialogue, speaks and does the scene right. 😎👍🏼
@ryanjacobson2508 Жыл бұрын
Th thing is, in real life sport events there are very rapid changes in momentum and which team has the upper hand. Which creates a lot of uncertainty and tension, and volatility. You can't really compose music that captures that.

@authork.c.sivils34003 жыл бұрын
In the rules, yes, there are actually rules for this sport, you can find them on the internet, states when a ball in play goes out of play, a new ball must be fired immediately. A ball had just gone out of play so a ball was fired to continue play. Jonathan dropped the player there on purpose, knowing a ball was about to be fired. The short story this film is based on is an interesting read and explains the game a bit better.

@goldenager593 жыл бұрын
I personally think spikes are (pardon the expression) overkill. Simple blunt studs of steel would, I think, be more than sufficient to secure an injury serious enough to put a skater out of action for the game. 🤔 Then again, of course, no one ever went broke overestimating the bloodlust of the mob. 😕
