its japanese local ingredients of course but that really reminds me a HECK of a lot of the sorts of things we forage and hunt here in colorado. although we have Elk and Mule Deer which seem to be much larger than the stuff theyre hunting up there from my reading. Mount Takao was the highlight of our trip to Tokyo. I couldn't believe how easy it was to escape the crowds and immerse ourselves in Ghibli-like scenery with hardly anyone around. The day started with pouring rain, but as soon as we began walking, the sun came out, and I almost cried when I saw Mount Fuji from the summit. It was everything I wanted from my Japan trip. From the small, non-touristy restaurant near the station where we tasted mountain vegetables, to the magical forest and statues, and then accidentally discovering the most gorgeous hidden temple at one of the train stops with two 100s-year-old cherry blossom trees in full bloom on the way back. The whole scene looked like it was painted on a canvas, and again, there was no one else around. Anyone who has visited Tokyo during cherry blossom season will understand the significance of this.

Aah!! A Mt. Takao episode!! I've always wanted to go there for a long time since I read about it in tour books and mangas, especially "Hachiouji Meibutsu: Tengu no Koi" by Tsukizuki Yoshi (lovely cute manga by the way 🥰🥰). All the food and place look so good, especially the cute Tengu-themed ones, so fitting with the mountain's theme 👺👺 I'll go there in two modes, one in casual hike, the second in full trail running mode. Maybe a tengu and a big white wolf will show up just like in the manga 🤣🤣😂😂 No cool jacket today for Shizuka-nee, but lovely all-blue and running shoes make a great sporty combination for the summer hike ☺️☺️ P.S: 04:43 a special permission to enjoy both Dango and Coffee inside? 😶😶
@ShizukaAnderson4 ай бұрын
Yes! If you buy the dango on the first floor of the cafe (where the soba restaurant is), they will let you eat inside because the dango stand and soba shop are actually the same restaurant! The cafe upstairs is a separate business and you should technically only eat/drink cafe goods upstairs, but I asked if it was okay to bring it down and they let me! :)

The main food attraction of Mt. Takao are the varieties of Soba. I'd prefer to have lunch at 清流亭 or 琵琶屋. There is also a small Monkey Park uphill - always fun to watch the hierachy within the "clan". You can also see Shijuku ward or even Mt. Fuji at clear weather conditions. For railway nerds: If you chose Takao San Guchi (Keio Line) for destination, the last stage is a single track which is quite unique. (additional info: To avoid rubbish, there are no trash bins.)

Mt. Takao is my jet lag destroying hack. My favorite flight to Japan departs after midnight in Los Angeles, meaning I can maximize vacation time and work the day I depart and I’ll be nice and tired to sleep on the plane, and arrive at Haneda at 5am. I first head to the major station nearest my hotel and put my luggage into a coin locker and then head for Mt. Takao. Being so early means there is hardly anyone on the mountain yet and it is very peaceful. Being out in the daylight and active that early, and having such a long day to tire me out really pushes me into local time.
@ShizukaAnderson4 ай бұрын
Damn, you really commit! This is a great hack hahaha
