During summer Tokyo can get extremely hot, fortunately Karuizawa is a nearby valley town where you visitors can stay cool while also seeing the beautiful Shiraito Waterfall, shop along the quaint Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street, and get an amazing view of the surrounding mountains from the Usui Pass Observation Platform.

Thank you for the video. I followed your itinerary exactly today. Took the bus up to the Usui Pass Platform and then hiked back down. The hike was amazing. Wonderful autumn foilage and I had the whole trail to myself, although with all bear warning signs, I was somewhat worried about getting killed by them.

Good questions! At the moment buses between Karuizawa Station and the Shiraito Waterfall are 710 yen one way, with 1-2 buses/hour (less in winter). Get off at "Shiraito no Taki" bus stop (白糸の滝) from where the waterfall is a five minute walk. For the Usui Pass Observation Deck from the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street (seen in the video) the one way fare on the red bus is 500 yen, while a round trip costs 800 yen. Hope that helps! There is so much in the Kansai region that is worthwhile. Have you already been to Nara? Also the Kibune Valley north of Kyoto is quite nice during the lush green summer. Sanzenin is a charming garden about an hour bus ride from Kyoto Station that you might like. The shores of Lake Biwa are pleasant, as is nearby Mount Hiei where the famous Enrakuji Temple is located at the top of the cable car ride. Hope this helps and have a good trip!

With so many options of things to do both in the city and nearby areas there isn't really a bad time to visit Tokyo. In February, average temperatures range from 2 to 10 Celsius (35 to 50 Fahrenheit) and it rains about five days total.
