Long time no see folks. Happy new year.
One day, while browsing the official website of Tokyo's Minato Ward, I found that they publish their old photos taken in Minato Ward which are copyright-free.
I was immediately fascinated by those old photos. And I thought it would be interesting to make a video of actually going to the places where those photos were taken and taking photos in 2022 to compare. Like before and after.
In Chapter 2, I went on a journey to see the now of the places where photos of Tokyo were taken in 1970 by a mysterious foreigner.
It was like time travel for me and I really enjoyed it. I hope you all enjoy it too.
This was the toughest edit work I have done. So see you again in 2024...
Minato Ward old photos: opendata.city....
Tokyo in 1970: commons.wikime...
I have also made some of my photos copyright-free and published (the other photos I took have the faces of passersby, so I have not yet decided what to do with them).
commons.wikime...
Latitude and longitude of each spot (copy&paste on Google Maps to get the exact locations)
1st photo: 35.674629, 139.736265
2: 35.676792, 139.734330
3&4: 35.64382507680499, 139.74899118569923
5: 35.646807, 139.709181
6: 35.646957,139.708495
7: 35.646485, 139.708117
8: 35.648490, 139.707479
9: 35.644438, 139.705259
10: 35.6432850504634, 139.70394677981406
11: 35.659599563475325, 139.70207695963268
12: The famous crossing
13: 35.659599563475325, 139.70207695963268
14: 35.66051757135998, 139.70088097880182
It occurred to me as I was writing this that it's a bit crazy that "half a century ago" is the 70s...

Thanks for the video, this is amazing work (I cannot imagine the time it took to reach such incredible findings and images) And as for many of the comments, I was feeling so nostalgic for no reason as I am from Belgium. I have visited Japan 3 times already (I hope many future visits as well ! ) and some of the images of Shibuya reminded me of streets I have been. Same comment for Ebisu as I have visited twice the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum which is one of the best photography museum I have seen ! Looking forward for the next one :)

Fantastic work Sorekara. This is a very good index of the prosperous growth Japan witnessed in those decades from 60s to 90s. Unfortunately due to demographic issues in Japan , next 30 years will witness huge all round decline in Japan Hope something is done to revive this wonderful land and not let it fade away Humanity has just one Japan.

Absolutely fascinating Ryo. I love this content. You are a great detective as well as a great videographer. I love how much Japan rebuilt after the war. A lot more could be done in Australia but it is always the same argument. Too costly. Considering the high taxes we pay that doesn't make sense to me. It's great to see some of the old buildings still remain and fit right in with their modern counterparts. Please do more of these videos when you are able .Happy New Year to you from Australia.

This is so cool! What I liked is that there is video and sound today, as opposed to a still image in the past. Its not too different from the perspective of folks who photographed these places in the past, but this time you captured what the environment was like on that day, just a little bit more. Maybe 50 years from now someone or multiple people may look back at your video, and capture and compare changes over the years. Peace out.

I like to take comparison photos too but from anime LOL. Still interesting though because while central Tokyo changes rapidly some of the outer areas have changed very little like Mizuho. Areas like parks shown in Clannad anime are still there unchanged. The anime was released in 2007.
