I read that the dark skin and colored hair of ganguro originated with rebellious japanese girls that protested their society's emphasis that beautiful women should be white as snow and with long, straight black hair... so they went the opposite... dark skin, colored and fluffy, big hairstyles/wigs. Pretty cool!

Honestly, as a black girl, I think it's just very interesting. I hope they don't get sick from all of that tanning though. I say, let them do what they want, if they think something looks cool and they want to do it, go ahead, have fun, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. We've all gone through our own share of trends in our lifetime whether it was emo, indie, scene, goth, punk, skateboarder, junkie, hipster, hippie, rave girl, etc. what ever it was we've all gone through it at some point, but to call someone "ugly" as you watch them going through there moment (since you're so superior and you've obviously far surpassed your trendy stage) is not cool, nor does it make you cool. So lay off, and just take it for what it is, if you don't want to, leave.

As far as I know, gyaru started as a way to rebel against the prevailing beauty standards, where fair skinned people were seen as pretty. It makes sense that they're labeled as ugly because it started out as a way to rebel against beauty standards.

Everyone please stop saying that they're trying to look black / like African Americans. Gyaru style, ganguro specifically is modeled after yamanba from Noh/Kabuki.
