I am definitely an avid fan of Magic and I personally love the Universes Beyond. I was already starting Iniverses Beyond when I commissioned custom art modded cards for my Commander decks and while some of my picks (Life is Strange, Naruto, Borderlands, Mass Effect) will likely NEVER get crossovers, I still enjoy playing them. Fallout has me on such a hype right now being a longtime fan of the game series, and WHO catapulted me into binging 9th through 12th Doctors (trying to grit my teeth and get through 13th) and I loved having the Scryfall gallery for WHO open on my phone so that when something jappened in the episodes that corresponded to a WHO card, I could reference that card and love it that much more! I could gush all day, but I think I'll leave it there.

"my attitude towards universes beyond has shifted, but my feelings have not" describes exactly how i feel about it at this point. I feel like the decks have been really good, in a vacuum, but when you inevitably swap out a few of the cards, and end up with regular old magic cards next to fallout, next to doctor who, next to warhammer, it can definitely feel a bit uncanny. It's unfortunate because there have been some excellent mechanics in them, and it's clear a lot of love went into designing them.
@MrVariant9 ай бұрын
Lol at least you didn't get ravnica clue edition, which I dodged a duplicate bullet and got clue on switch, grinch who, and dice versions for less than even the discounted $50. Way better. I preferred the brother's war with transformers to be a bit more subtle, let alone it's the cheapest gift bundle at about $45, with ixalan/jurassic park being $10 more. I've also noticed the collector's boosters are polished turds. You generally get fancy card art for less than $1, which is terrible when it costs $25+, though sales for under $20 are nice. Prof did luck out but not by that much (profit but less than $200).
@AlluMan969 ай бұрын
I think what compounds this feeling is how Universes Beyond so often picks things that are so wildly incongruous with the aesthetic of the rest of the game. Like, Warhammer is so immediately recognizable as itself, that it's impossible to hide it while more contemporary ones like Walking Dead, Evil Dead, Stranger Things, etc will just never belong in Magic in my eyes. Part of the reason why LoTR really worked for me was honestly that it just about fits into Magic. Aside from some really key characters and elements, I can quite comfortably slot those cards into just about anything, helped by how much of a cornerstone to fantasy at large LoTR is. Entish Restoration, Troll of Khazad Dhum, Mirkwood Bats, Orcish Bowmasters, while you can tell by their names and art that these are Universes Beyond, they also don't clash with Magic's vibe too harshly. But on the whole though, I do feel that. I bought one of the Dr Who precons and I don't really have any intentions of taking it apart or adding to it, just sitting as almost like a time-capsule of it's release window. Of course, there is something to be said about how garish some of these cards are, that they kinda have their own unique appeal when all lumped together into one, immersion shattering package. Alot of the robots and artifacts of these decks will fit beautifully alongside Warhammer Necrons and Dr Who Cybermen into a Megatron-deck I'm planning to build, because with all these wildly disperate art styles and vibes clashing with Magic's own aesthetic more-so than with anything else, it's like a child's box of robot-toys stomping on their parents' hobby project. Something so tacky that it loops back around to just being hilarious in it's blasphemy.

I caved to FOMO and bought the deck set because I didn't want to end up not being able to play radstorm and a bunch of the energy counter cards because I REALLY want to make a janky energy counter deck work. Turns out the energy counter deck itself is the weakest of the bunch though a bunch of the individual cards, I'm sure, are awesome. But when it come to Universes Beyond, the collector boosters and displays are beyond me (ha), because they're so expensive and you can just get the decks if you're looking for a card and/or buy singles of the cards that you really enjoy. So they're EXCLUSIVELY a lottery ticket. Pull a serialized card or bust. Collector booster displays are already a very... luxury product. I sometimes can one for very cheap from a friend who can buy them at distributor prices. E.g. A collector box of Midnight Hunt for 75 bucks and even those have very iffy EV but at least you have the chance of pulling cards, that aren't in any precon. Paying 400 bucks for a kick in the nuts, when you could have just bought the fallout precons... is really just dudes with well paying IT-Jobs burning burning some cash for fun.
@addisonhennessy76579 ай бұрын

@@eewweeppkk I wasnt speaking specifically about the collectors boxes, those are undefendable, we are talking about UB in general. Im speaking about quality and color of print, not the foil issues. Regarding the appeal of universes beyond for new players: A friend of mine with whom I had layed YGO intensely about 16 years ago tried for more than a year to get me into MTG, which he loves today. Never worked for me because I did not want to fall into a game that sucks money out of me continuously and and that takes up so much shelf space. But then the Doctor Who decks came out, through which I also discovered Commander. Bought the decks for me and my GF (we both love the BBC series) and that brought me into the MTG ecosystem. Bought the 60 card precon starter decks, played around with 1v1 duels, then went to my first Sealed and then finally Draft events for OTJ. I also bought the Fallout Caesar Deck (without ever looking at power levels or such, just because I love Caesar and Fallout New Vegas... so hearing you talk about FNV and Doctor Who occasionally on video is a real treat, professor!), which was the first Precon I upgraded myself. All baby MTG player achievements, sure, but a lovely onramp for me. So as an anecdote, I can confirm, yeah, they get us franchise lovers into MTG with these decks. My girlfriend, still more casually interested in MTG than me at this point, is nevertheless looking forward to the Final Fantasy sets, so even if the game doesn't onramp you fully into its ecosystem, it can also make people come back several times to game worlds they love. I see the criticism with settings that don't fit the MTG canon though. While I somehow can fit Sci-Fi like DW, FO and Warhammer into my brain, and fantasy like BG and LOTR obviously fit, I have no idea why I should want to play Assassin's Creed or Marvel decks. Said friend that got me into Magic also showed me your channel btw. Love it, keep it up Professor!

So yeah, if you just want the cards, and not the swag, buy the decks.

Even the joy of opening packs can’t compete with the buyers remorse of buying a $400 box.

I really loved playing Fallout 4, I played on my vacation with my then girlfriend and now soon to be wife. We played the heck out of it, we amassed something like 13 days of playing hours, it was a blast. When wotc announced fallout set, i was thrilled!!! and the memories of that time came back, we are planning on replaying the games. She have the dogmeat deck, i bought the dogmeat sleeves, playmat, deckbox, the whole thing. The love and emotions and everything cant be explained. That is what I think about the universes beyond, its not a reasonable thing, its something different. We got all 4 commander decks. ;D

I have mixed feelings on UB. They’ve done a great job with some of them, but some are kind of duds for me like Fallout, Stranger Things, Transformers, and Street Fighter. I don’t want Marvel, though. That’s just gross

i'm ready for some of the IPs that i am more personally invested in (marvel and final fantasy in particular) to see either alternate versions of cards i like, or new friends :) so far these are fun but, they havent hit the franchises i'm particularly devoted to (if we get a legend of zelda, for example, i will die of excitement)

@@UltimateDrDoom Surge's look okay, Im still waiting for the day that magic releases Embossed Foil cards, similar to the dragon ball super card game, some of their rarest cards look so sick. (In videos, in pictures they look ass tbh.) I'd say the most likely cards to get that kind of treatment would be a new run of masterpieces, however.

I'm largely indifferent to Universes Beyond, but I get both the PoVs. On one hand I understand that these products muddy the card game Magic The Gathering with its intriguing story and long history. Heck, even I feel the fatigue of being presented with so many different IPs in MTG, rather than actual MTG sets. But on the other, I get the joy you feel when one of your other favorite things crosses over with your favorite card game. I know I couldn't stay impartial to save my life if WotC released an MLP commander set with 4 Precons, despite how objectively absurd it would be.

Regarding Universes Beyond, my D&D group had convinced me to occasionally play Magic with them after sessions and just use some of their decks, but I wasn't buying anything myself. LOTR and now Fallout have changed that. I am excited to see characters I know and love in Magic. It also got me to buy other things as well, I really liked WoE and am excited about Thunder Junction. Universes Beyond may not be for everyone, but it's really fun for some of us

A potentially interesting perspective: I got into magic last year because I heard this set was coming. After having played now for around 6 months, I understand the problems with prices and universes beyond in general, but I will always acknowledge that it got me into the game. Magic is awesome, and I am happy to be a part of it. I bought the commander decks and love them.

So, I opened two collector booster boxes and had about the same experience as you did opening one. Except my preorder price was $324 each. The current value of all the cards I pulled is about $1150. I didn't really even get a lot of high value cards, except I got the actual $100 Sol Ring. There are a lot of variants in the $2-$5 range,and a handful in the $10-$30 range that makes it likely you will break even, *if you plan to break even*. However, I bought these just for the fun of opening and exploring all these cards. You got a bit giddy at one point, and I had to laugh. The joy of opening a new set is still an experience that has intrinsic value. As long as I don;t lose a lot of money, I'll enjoy opening a reasonable amount of packs for a set that I have an affinity for. LotR and Fallout just happened to be that for me. I might not do this again for several years, but then again, I have a huge collection of Marvel comics so I may go crazy one more time.

I am a big fan of Fallout.The Fallout set got me into Magic. A friend let me borrow his Caesar precon once when teaching me commander, and last week I bought my own copy. I used to play Yugioh so I also picked up the Grave Danger Precon and it fits my playstyle from Yugioh, and now I am trying to mash the two themes together. I call it Caesar's Undead Legion.

I only recently got into Magic the Gathering and I'm not gonna lie the fact that there are Fallout and Lord of the Rings themes decks was a huge selling point for me. I haven't gotteen into the "magic lore" yet but I feel like these Universe beyond sets definitely help pulling people from other tcgs, and in the end, in my opinion this is much more important then "staying pure". A lot of my friends ultimately where convinced to try it out because they could get Jurrassic Park, Fallout and Warhammer 40k cards.

On the topic of universes beyond, my first introduction to My first introduction to Magic was the Lord of the Rings set. I fell in love with the game through the catalyst of the Lord of the Rings flavor. Now that I've drafted and played with other sets such as WoE and LCI, I do think Magic's original sets are really fun and should 100% be prioritized over sets like a Fallout or Doctor Who. That being said, having a universes beyond set bi-annually or annually would be an effective compromise. In general, it's felt like there are too many sets coming out too quickly, at least for me. It's hard for me to say as a newer player since I don't have the years or decades of attachment to this game, but I think overall, they're good for introducing new player to the game of Magic.

@TolarianCommunityCollege I understand why some people may not like these packs or sets of universe beyond. But let me say this. My GF has never been interested in MTG. Until the fallout packs. Now she loves it. It got me back into MTG after years of not playing. If anything, it brings in new and excited players who are showing support for what is basically just a fun game to play, make friends, and have a good time. Haters can hate, but they shouldn’t complain when there is more support for the game now than ever before! 🐸🤘🏻 Thanks for the video, it was a great watch!

I might be the odd one out but i have been playing magic for around 15 years and absolutely love the universes beyond, they bring a new and interesting ascetic to the game aswell as carda you wouldn't normally see in a normal set, so they allow people to sometimes build around mechanics or themes that would otherwise be impossible and they also bring in new players to magic that otherwise would never even play the game if it was just normal magic cards, i hope they do a large universe beyond with a new IP every year or even a large one and a small crossover every year
@bjj218 ай бұрын
No. MTG is too stupid to catch on to the sports card niche. They need to make more 1/1, 1/100 and so on and on. I'd pay $400 if there's a guarantee that one or two cards will be numbered. They are losing so much by not doing this. I bought a $300-400 (can't remember exact $) boxed basketball with all the names and numbering on the box so I knew the odds. I pulled a LeBron and Larry Bird double auto. Sold it on ebay for $2,250. MTG would sell way more if they put in rares.

I'm super new coming back to Magic (first new sets were WoE/LCI) and can empathize how purists don't vibe with the universes beyond, but I believe UB helps Magic as a whole when the sets reach out to untapped (hah) markets and get new eyes on the game, constantly adding to the player pool just from people seeing characters, locations, objects from universes they are fond of and then, hopefully, they start their journey into building decks with in-universe cards and other UB sets. Great video as always Prof and Editor 💜
