Tolkien teased the hell out of us with the showdown at the gate with the Witch King! I was so pissed on my first read. He did, but if you understand what Gandalf became, it should have been expected that there would not be a show-down between these two, just as we knew Gandalf would never face off against Sauron directly. In the scene at the gate, he did exactly what he was meant to do. As the agent of Authority, he spoke with command and the Witch King did, in fact halt and not enter the city. Gandalf spoke true. He knew exactly what he was supposed to do and not do. Really, he didn't need the flex of destroying the Witch King outright. He got his flex by merely speaking a few words and putting the Witch King in line, directing him back out of the city through prior actions and ultimately leading to his downfall.

What's this? A new video? And on my favorite character from Tolkien's legendarium to boot? Bless me and splash me, my precious! Excellent video as always Dave. I'll just nerd a bit since I just adore Olórin and especially his incarnation as Gandalf the Grey. First I'll say that Gandalf absolutely intended on fighting the Witch-King himself, as he says in RotK, the Pyre of Denethor: "I must go [...] The Black Rider is abroad, and he will yet bring ruin to us. I have no time." Despite his orders, Gandalf did take a more active role after the One Ring was discovered; he led the Fellowship, he dealt with Saruman, took command of the defense of Minas Tirith and even of the allied forces of Rohan and Gondor at the bidding of Aragorn. Next, about the "none of you have any weapon that could hurt me" line; I think Gandalf is telling the truth. In fact, I think Gandalf the White, as opposed to Gandalf the Grey, isn't constrained in a body of flesh anymore. Didn't Gwaihir note after his return that he was now light as a feather? As for Sauron being hurt by Narsil, I think that his case is different; Morgoth, despite being of higher order and power than Sauron, was seven times wounded and had his feet cut off by Fingolfin, and this wound never healed. Nor did Sauron's finger that Isildur cut to take the Ring; as Gollum says, there are only four fingers on the Black Hand. In the Silmarillion, Luthien threatened to despoil him of his "raiment of flesh" forever and he had to flee while bleeding. I think Sauron and Morgoth are the only Ainur who bleed in the entire Legendarium, though I may remember wrong. And Balrogs seem to die a lot by the hands of the Children of Ilúvatar, often by just falling from a high place. It is said in the Silmarillion that Morgoth got more and more tied to the Earth with time, becoming more "physical" and it's very possible that his servants suffered the same fate, hence why they were vulnerable to mortal weapons. Finally I wonder: the Istari were maia which inhabited a body of flesh. Isn't that kinda the same thing that Melian did so she could wed Thingol and bear Luthien? I think this is an interesting parallel. I also like to think she and Olórin were friends in Valinor since they both abode in Lorien.

Yes, I think Gandalf the White is no longer an Istari , but is fully powered and unrestricted in his use of power, only being restricted by his own dedication to the mission. I believe Gandalf's use of the term naked to me means without being embodied. Also sometimes people question if Gandalf the white was killed would he come back again.. but I don't think it would have been possible to kill Gandalf the White by any power in Middle Earth including Sauron.
@ph1shstyx9 ай бұрын
Sauron at full power would have been an issue, but without the ring I don't think he could have dealt with Gandalf the white because I agree, I think he was given his full power, but to follow his initial mission of inspiring, not leading. Gandalf was Eru's failsafe, to make sure what was supposed to be dealt with at the end of the first age was finally dealt with (including the possibility of running into another balrog).

@@VaderPopsVicodin10 Just as Melkor was the strongest of the Valar, Sauron was indeed the strongest of the Maiar. With that said, I don't believe that Gandalf the White was necessarily still a Maiar but rather something different as he was send back by Eru Iluvatar himself with a specific mission order, and thus given the specific tools necessary to accomplish that mission. If the mission required an actual face off between Gandalf and Sauron than Gandalf would have had the power to defeat Sauron. However that wasn't the mission so Gandalf never did. My point is that Gandalf the White is a much more ambiguous being, being strictly a custom tool crafted by Eru Iluvatar to accomplish his goal. A custom tool that was 100% perfect for the job at hand. Rather than a being that we've already come to know like a Valar or a Maiar.

Eru Iluvatar said, “I’ve been watching your career with great interest. Congratulations, you’ve earned a Power-Up 💪” The Istari sent to Middle-Earth could probably be considered Maiar at something like 10-30% of their power level, and with much of their memory and knowledge blocked. When Gandalf the Grey ‘died’ and was sent back as Gandalf the White, imagine that Eru unshackled about 20-50% of his power level. Not to the point that he could challenge Sauron directly, because that was never the point of the Istari, but to make him a more effective guide and rally leader for the mortals opposing Sauron. Gandalf also got the distinction of being one of the only three instances in ‘history’ that Eru felt merited his direct involvement in the affairs of Arda.

As in, when he was sent he was "clothed in mortal form" and now he isn't. I think this makes sense considering the power he displays. And the reason the restrictions were placed on the wizards to begin with, gandalf no-lomger needs as he is wise enough now to see the necessity of those restrictions.

Gandalf the Grey and the White are the same being. Just manifesting different levels of power. Gandalf the Grey agreed to incarnate with a small amount of his angelic power . So that he could avoid the temptation that befell Sauron and Saruman…. but also because he could empathize with the experience of the Children of Iluvatar he was trying to guide. When he fell to the Balrog, Iluvatar realized that Gandalf had performed his mission to help the Children faithfully. So He sent Olorin back…and this time with a much larger portion of his power. Gandalf was not being entirely forthcoming when he suggested that he was what Saruman should have been. He was more. If anything he was what all FIVE Istari should have been in a single being. Gandalf the Grey was more like a Wizard of myth. Gandalf the White was a messenger of Divine Justice. Probably walking in nearly his full angelic power Sent by Eru Himself to finally deal with the matter of supernatural evil that the fallen Ainur had unleashed on Arda and Middle-earth. Because Olorin had shown that he could be trusted to use that power wisely and faithfully. Gandalf the Grey’s power was elemental magic and persuasion. Gandalf the White was a channel for Divine power. To stand between Creation and those who would illegitimately try to dominate and undo it. Gandalf the White had no reason to strive with the Witch-King. The Nazgûl’s power lay in death and the fear of it. Death had now power over a being like Olorin/Gandalf the White at that point. Gandalf’s job had always been to inspire the Free Peoples to face their fear, and to heal them from the experience of standing up to that fear and the Shadow.

Interesting video. I’ll restrict my comment to one slightly off topic point touched on briefly in the beginning: The philosophical question of whether a wizard is still a Maia. You cast doubt on the idea that they are. You say, ‘Many, if not most, of the things that make a Maia a Maia do not apply to Gandalf and the rest of the Istari.” You then list some examples of why you say that and note that “They are fundamentally different from the physical world of Arda[…]None of this is true of the wizards[…]’they must forgo might, and clothe themselves in flesh…dimming their wisdom and knowledge and confusing them with fears, cares, and weariness coming from the flesh.’” And “embodied, the Istari had needs to learn much anew by slow experience, and though they knew whence they came, the memory of the Blessed Realm was to them a vision from afar.” You go on to note that “in this same chapter we’re again told that the wizards aren’t Maiar with the appearance of men, they are actually bound in real bodies. ‘They were clad in bodies as of Men, real and not feigned, but subject to the fears and pains and weariness of earth, able to hunger and thirst and be slain[…]And it’s not just a wizard’s mind and body that is limited. The Valar also placed significant restrictions on the use of their Maiar powers.’” The thing that immediate occurred to me as I listened to all of this was the foundational Christian belief in what is called the hypostatic union. The term comes from the Greek word “hypostasis”, which means “person” or “subsistence.” In simple terms, it asserts that Jesus Christ is simultaneously fully God and fully man. He possesses two complete and distinct natures. He is 100% God and 100% man. When the second person of the Godhead chose to become a man, He knew He “must forgo might, and clothe [himself] in flesh…dimming [His] knowledge and confusing [Himself] with fears, cares, and weariness coming from the flesh”, to use Tolkien’s words about the Istari. And “embodied, [Christ] had needs to learn much anew by slow experience, and though [He] knew whence [He] came, the memory of the Blessed Realm was to [Him] a vision from afar.” In the New Testament, we’re told that Christ wasn’t God with the appearance of a man, but was actually bound in a real body. Or, as Tolkien might have said, “He was clad in a body as a Man, real and not feigned, but subject to the fears and pains and weariness of earth, able to hunger and thirst and be slain[…]And it’s not just Christ’s mind and body that is limited. God also placed significant restrictions on the use of His divine powers.” Here is a key verse on the topic: “[Christ] who, though he was in the form of God[…] EMPTIED himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death[…]Therefore God has highly exalted him…” - Philippians 2:6-9 As with Gandalf the Gray vs. Gandalf the White, the difference between pre-resurrected Christ and post-resurrected Christ can be seen both in the types of miracles He did and in His apparent increased/restored knowledge. For example, post-resurrection we see Christ being able to alter His appearance - or at least his perceived appearance (“Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.”), appearing in a locked room (“On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’”), and even apparently flying (“And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” And in another place, "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command[...]Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air"). And, as I said before, things He had not known pre-resurrection were apparently known after He rose. Before: “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” After: “So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He said to them, ‘It is not for YOU to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.’” Tolkien would have been well aware of this doctrine and I am convinced it was that model that he used for Gandalf.

How nice to see a comment to this video that a) has class, b) is well thought-out and intelligent, and c) concerns the issue at hand, instead of just complaining about pronunciation.

that's all BS. Gendalf slain the mighty BOSS, got extra rare loot and got all the experience from the battle (designed for a whole party to share) all for him self, and thus capped his level. that's how he got an upgrade from grey to white!

Usually I may have to rewind from time to time to wrap my head around certain details, but the way you explained it was easy to follow and interpret. A must watch for any fan. ⚔️🛡️
