In the way that the mortality of Men is usually portrayed by Elves as a "gift" from Eru, I wonder if there's another, unexamined "gift" of Eru to his Secondborn children that, unlike the Firstborn whose Fëa will literally abandon their Hröa (they will die) if they succumb to grief, Men cannot die this way, and just have to feel it. I imagine that if an elf suffered through as much grief as Túrin has, Tolkien would write that he "faded into grief and was spent" and kill that elf there and then.

Thank you Rainbow Dave! The Dragon's Deception is an excellent, yet heart-rending episode. No matter how much Turin tries to do the right thing, it always seems to end up in grief and despair.Turin's suffering is endless, from Beleg to Finduilas. Tolkien really created an incredible, complex character. What an exceptionally moving story, and told so masterfully by you. So looking forward to the rest of the series, but at the same time not wanting it to come to an end.

This has to be the most heart-breaking installment yet. I honestly was nigh tear-stricken in the way you encapsulated the emotional gravity of Turins internal suffering after realizing how he failed Finduilas. As the reader/viewer its almost as if you're suffering with Turin himself, such a compellingly tragic and sympathetic character which is a credit to both Tolkein as a writer and you as a narrator Dave, well done as usual, just beautiful storytelling. Finduilas...Labadal...Gwindor...Beleg one after another the doom of Turin becomes the demise of so many good people so undeserving of such dismal fate.

Great video Dave! The Children of Hurin was the first book I read after watching the movies growing up and is still my favorite story of middle earth! I wish the fall of Gondolin was a bit longer… it’s interesting how much involvement ulmo had in the first age against morgoth, he was the only valor that really seemed to do anything for the free folk outside of valinor. I feel like he’s responsible for Turin’s healing at Eithel Ivrin and he was definitely trying to save Turin from failing at Nargothrond. One should always listen to the advice of Cirdan!! It must be so sad for Turin to go back to the pools and see them desolate now after all that it did for him and the joy it brought to others of Beleriand. Morgoth’s slow creep down the continent was always foreshadowed by the retreat of Ulmo’s blessing in the waters of the land. Anyways I’m rambling! Your description of Turins second visit to Ivrin made me really think! Keep up the good work!!

I was looking forward to one of the few funny moments in this book but it was barely mentioned: "Turin comes across orcs surrounding a small group of men: >Therefore, out of sight in the underwood, Túrin made a great noise of stamping and crashing, and then cried in a loud voice as if leading many men: 'Ha! Here we find them! Follow me all! Out now, and slay! >At that many of the Orcs looked up in dismay, and then out came Túrin leaping, waving as if to men behind, and the edges of Gurthang flickered like flame in his hand...the woodmen ran to join him, and together they hinted their foes into the river: few came across. >At last they halted in the bank, and Dorlas, leader of the woodmen, said: 'You are swift in the hunt, lord; but your men are slow to follow.' >'Nay,' said Túrin, 'we all run together as one man, and will not be parted'"

It just occurred to me that if Morgoth can chain Húrin to a chair with a view that allows him to always see his children and their misfortune following his curse, wouldn't that mean that Morgoth himself had the power to see where Túrin was at all times? And if so, why not just have some orcs meet him in the wilderness? And even more importantly, why not use that power on Túor and find Gondolin?
@EricGasz69420 Жыл бұрын
Morgoth doesn’t know where and what Turin is doing at all times and Hurin can only, in the words of morgoth, “see with my eyes, and hear with my ears” morgoth learns from his orcs and Glaurung what Turin is doing, and Hurin learns second hand from Morgoth. It is a bit confusing but I believe the Children of Hurin is a lay told by a singer chilling in ossirand after the fall of gondolin and maybe after the third kin slaying I think?! Hope this helps!
@alexanderwerner9294 Жыл бұрын
We can't say for sure how it works exactly, but it most likely involves mainly Morgoth just telling about what happens. Hurin certainly doesn't see all the exact happenings, as you pointed out that it would imply that Morgoth knows everything up to the intimiate dialogues. But Morgoth's knowledge runs deep. His spies are everywhere. Take Nargothrond, he knew that the Mormegil was Turin. He certainly told Hurin about it and that he was the one to have the great bridge built. And then later, he tells him about Nargothrond's fall and how that bridge helped Glaurung and the Orcs to ransack it. It is also said that he would add lies to the truth and downplay the good parts. He knew Turin, as the Dragon-helm, was the captain of Dor-Cuarthol, and that he inspired a heavy resistance to Morgoth for a while. I imagine that he downplayed such successes of Turin quite a bit whilst emphasizing and distorting the negatives, such as the eventual betrayal of Mim. Hurin gets essentially fed Morgoth's version of The Children of Hurin. And many of the details are indeed lost in it. Hurin doesn't know about the better parts, as Morgoth mostly didn't know, and when he did, he would lie about them. He doesn't know about Thingol pardoning Turin for Saeros' death and trying to get him back to Doriath multiple times, and he probably doesn't even know why Turin left Doriath. In Morgoth's version, Thingol was just a bac host to Turin and utterly failed at keeping him and the rest of his family safe. We see that from Hurin's actions later on, that he has a distorted version of the events, lacking many of the finer details. Melian points it out plainly. Hurin doesn't see all the moments of Turin doubting, trying to do good, the bravery and dedication of Beleg, Gwindor, and Mablung to keep them safe. He just sees all the failures. It's obviously possible that he also tormented him with false visions. And perhaps, as Dave suggested, he could sometimes give him first hand glimpses, for example, through Glarung's eyes. Though I personally find it less likely. Morgoth's eyes and ears, much like the Eye of Sauron, are more metaphors of their reach and their knowledge. Morgoth doesn't literally hear what's being said hundreds of miles away. It is, however, sufficiently ambiguous to let the imagination fill in the blanks. And the uncertainty of how much Morgoth actually knows and influences Beleriand, and how exactly his curse works, makes it seem all the more mysterious and threatening.
@MrARock001 Жыл бұрын
@@alexanderwerner9294 yeah, it was rightly pointed out that it's more like Húrin only knows what Morgoth knows, and then only the parts that Húrin wouldn't want to hear. I think I wad just taken by the visual of Húrin literally chained to a chair on the top of a mountain, which for me conjured something like the far-seeing effect of the chair on Amon Hen, but I guess it was more symbolic.

But i find it a bit odd that he spent so many years either fighting in the field or living with the elves. But not once did he consider returning to his mother and sister until Glaurang suggests it? If he cared so much about his family, why did he wait so long to see them? The curse of morgoth? But sonetimes the curse works, sometimes it doesnt. For example, he's luckier than some such as Gwindor or Hurin. He never ends up in the clutches of the dark lord
