The death of Beleg is one of the most stupefying moments in the entire legendarium. Reading that section is enough to bring a tear to the eye. As beautifully written as it is tragic.

Another example of why I love this Tolkien channel most of all - the small diversion to discuss - and speculate a bit - that Beleg being fatherless contextualizes his deep connection to the young Turin - I always sort of wondered about why he loved Turin so much - perhaps he was healing his own pain and loss through a surrogate son? Lovely speculation for sure

Fantastic story telling, and a talent for bringing us in to the world of the characters, for sure. Other little things too, like the cadence, delivery, and gentleness of his voice, make it easy to fall into, and get absorbed in the pictures that are flowing through my mind.

I’ve always headcanonned Beleg as a somewhat younger Elf who saw in Túrin not a surrogate son, but simply a kindred spirit with whom he shared a mutual understanding of the loss of a father.

When I started this video, my girlfriend went like “Haven’t you already read the whole book (COH) that you’re watching/listening-to a whole video on one of the chapters?” 😂😂😂 Laugh is all I could manage because they wouldn’t understand. Heck, I wouldn’t understand if I didn’t discover works of Professor Tolkien early in my life AND developed an appreciation of his works. Only Tolkien fans would understand. As always, thanks Dave ❤

Re: the number of maimed and disabled heroes and legends in the Legendarium. I’ve said something like this back in one of the Beren/Luthien videos, but I can’t help thinking that Tolkien’s experiences in war led him to include such details. Including, I might add, the fact that all of these heroes are still able to do mighty things once they recover. WWI was especially brutal in how many soldiers on both sides survived their wounds only to be permanently maimed; to the point that plastic surgery as we know it today was pretty much invented at this time. I choose to see it as Tolkien’s way of saying “yes, your wounds are great; but your life is not over and there is yet still great hope and possibility for you.”

Beleg is one of my favourite elves in the whole of the Legendarium. It's sad many don't know how awesome and devoted he was. I also love the line 'son of the wilderness, who wist no sire', it's so evocative! I thought it meant he was one of the original elves but you are right in that this would be odd. It's hard to describe Beleg as he is of course one of the most impressive elves but he has a devoted, earthy quality that makes him seem more Mannish. It's sad to see him get so embroiled in Morgoth's Curse but I don't think he would have had it any other way if it meant fulfilling his love and duty. I always imagine it must be hard for an elf so involved in human lives to end up in Valinor amongst the Valar and Vanyar who had never encountered the Younger Children of Eru and realise that you might never see your mortal friends again. I imagine Beleg would have many things to say to Finrod about this in later Ages.

Beleg and Finrod are definitely in the top 5...but for me Fingolfin is number 1...the sheer cajones on Fingolfin to ride up on Morgoth's front lawn, quite literally and call him out is probably the most badass moment in all of fiction, let alone in Tolkien's works.

Amazing story telling as always! I always wondered on some Tolkien friendships if they weren't a kind of love not lived as if it would be lived today. The mistake a friend for a foe situation reminded me of how Frodo saw Sam for a brief moment upon his rescue from the orcs. Though Frodo thankfully did not slay Sam. I always assumed that Gwindor took on Turin as part of his healing. It is not uncommon to be strong for another to cope with one's own issues.

“There are no weong answers except for Feanor.” Classic. That’s why my favorite elf is probably Maedhros. Indeed he is Feanor, one might say, Feanor as he should have been.
@FinrodFelagundTheFair7 ай бұрын
Ah, Maehdros. What a great Elf indeed. He WAS Feanör as he COULD have been. That is the only difference I would say. Not should have been. But, he could have been. It was within Feanör to be just as great and honorable as his son. He CHOSE not to. And it's a huge difference. I know it seems I am playing semantics here, but hear me out. Feanör knew about Melkor. Knew Melkor's ways and still allowed himself to fall prey to it due to his pride (Pride comes before the fall they say) and unyielding nature. Once Feanör got something in his mind there was no shaking it loose. He'd hold onto it as if it was a grudge he couldn't kick( which it was, but I digress) In the end it was his own pride and haughty behavior that brought him to Melkor's level. In my humble opinion.
@intenzityd31817 ай бұрын
Maedhros didn't achieve a fraction of what Feanor did, nor did his evil deeds have such justification.
@FinrodFelagundTheFair7 ай бұрын
@intenzityd3181 And that is an opinion you are having. Maehdros didn't have the luxury of sitting in Valinor. Maehdros had to fight for everything in Beleriand. Also, Maehdros didn't commit atrocious acts like Curufin and Celegorm. He made some questionable decisions, but never atrocities like shooting an arrow at Lúthien or trying to steal Nargothrond from me.

Truly there is noone better to capture and illustrate the utterly tragic magnitude of this Tolkein tale than you Dave. A veritable honorary student of the professor himself, your understanding is impeccable and really portrays well the subtle machinations of Morgoths power in how this curse manifests as the simple yet terrible misfortunes of a flawed character. Your story telling is fantastic and brings a whole new level of engagement to these beautiful and tragic tales. The most awesome elf is obviously Gil-galad. No, wait, it’s Elrond, but only if you don’t count Galadriel. But of course her brother Finrod is the best! Except for Fingolfin. But I’ve always loved Beleg the best! I think Tolkien love Beleg especially. He’s the only elf he ever clearly drew himself. Drawing elves is very difficult. I’ve drawn Beleg, Thingol, Luthian, Glorfindal, Eleond, Galadriel, Celebrimbor, and Ciradan, and they are hard to get right.

The only one who was referred similarly to Beleg was Iarwain Ben-Adar, in which case it was further explained by himself: "Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - BEFORE the Dark Lord came from Outside." Therefore I always interpreted it the same way. Beleg was LITERALLY without father. Sidenote: I dont think Tom is an ainur. Also, he is not a representation of Iluvatar. However, to me, ALL references point to one thing: Bombadil is the avatar of Arda ( the spirit of the Earth and the foundations of the country) Goldbery: Mother Nature (the spirit representing Life, the summary of all livin things) These are not the godly powers, not the representation of anything Valarian, but the result of it. The Hearth and Soul of the Music. Not invincible, not all powerful, but extending over and beyond any power confined to Arda except Eru. Not by ruling, but by having within.

I sincerely believe from my readings that Beleg was indeed an awakened elf without a father except perhaps Eru Illuvatar. The line you quoted is unique in all the works referring to an elf. If it didn’t have a deep meaning then I doubt Tolkien would have written it. We know all the major original awakened elves and since Beleg was not mentioned, Tolkien made sure we were aware of it specifically.

@@meleardil That is an interesting analysis. Are you averring Bombadil and Goldberry (and presumably her mother) were by-products o the actual creation of Arda? It’s a good explanation since the Secret Fire of Illuvatar went into creating the ‘living’ Arda. We will never know, but in Tolkien’s creative mind everything fell into place subconsciously, that is the essence of the man’s genius. He might not have consciously known himself at the time his children’s Dutch doll was incorporated into his legendarium. As to Beleg, there is no reason why he could not have been an original awakenee (pardon the word), but I found Tolkien’s reference here compelling.

So I just need to know the years they were each shackled or free!! Any help appreciated!!

They did not overlap. Maedhros' captivity was at around the time of the Noldor's coming to Beleriand. The others are several hundred years later. Beren's captivity in Tol Sirion would have lasted weeks, maybe a couple of months max. It was over years before the Nirnaith Arnoediad in which Gwindor was captured. Also, Beren was held in Tol Sirion, not Angband. Beren did visit Angband and that's where he lost his hand and gained the silmaril, but that was under a day in length and he was never a prisoner during it.

I'd love to be able to tell you my favorite elf but I'm still standing on the rim of this yawning precipice. Give it a couple more months and you'll yank me down the rabbithole yet.

Children of Húrin could have been written by George R.R. Martin, considering how many of the beloved main characters die.
