Except it's fake history. The plague doctor masks originated in Italy as a carnival mask in the 18th century, with the first and most severe wave of the plague taking place in the 13th century. Although beaked masks were used to treat patients with the plague, most "plague doctors" before and during the period when the masks were worn, weren't real doctors. Most counted the dead and transported dead bodies. They would sell fake treatment options and rip off the sick for profit.

Great video Tom and I'm checking out your website now. I wanted to say something however about a few comments below. I read a few people upset about the prices. Well,, I can understand as money's tight in this economy. But this isn't some cheap vinyl, or imitation or just cheap leather. This is handcrafted professionally tooled work here. My late friend made saddles, holsters etc. It's expensive and time consuming. Normally I'll admit I complain about the cost of items but really. 2 to 3 hundred dollars is more than a fair price for these. Well that's my 2 cents. Thanks for posting this.. Excellent quality.

Wow! Amazing and I really like that he found a way to produce a still very quality mask for less. Many companies would just say, hey it's hand-stitched, so that's the cost, and the. He did just the beak, which is even less, also very considerate. Love the bulldog mask BTW!

Beautiful work, Tom! I have long admired it. In fact, your Plague Doctor masks were a huge inspiration to the one I made last year for myself (with my own prescription lenses)... though I will be referring people to you if they ask me to make one for them! :-) Especially now that I know you make one to fit people with glasses. One question, if you don't mind me asking... What kind of stain are you brushing on to the brown Plague Doctor mask? I'd love to try that kind of coloring on some of my masks.

there is reason why the eyes on the model at the museum was offset or more at the side because people back then believed that somehow disease can be transfered thru direct eye contact. its cool remake though
