It amuses me how Tom dismissed the idea of using this video to teach kids because several years back I had a high school history teacher who actually used the History of Japan video as one of her classes through the year. The main focus of her class was the WWII period of time, so, since this video focuses on that period so much, it was great for her. I assume she's still using it to this day.

I notice how it ignores russia in ww2. the japanese generals quite literally stated that the atomic bombs were nothing to worry about, and that it played no part in their decision to surrender.they didnt even know about the second one before they decided to surrender to america. they surrendered to america because Russia was preparing to invade and japan knew it couldnt win a war against russia. america was offering better terms of surrender, and japan also wanted to keep the image of an infallible emperor, so they used the atomic bombs as their reason, treating them like some new horrific weapon of war which forced them to surrender.

No generals said that. There were a group of generals who wanted to continue fighting, even if the Americans destroyed every Japanese city one-by-one. Because Japan was already defeated and incapable of ever winning the war before the nukes were dropped, and LONG before the Soviets declared war. Japan had even been running TO the Soviets to try and negotiate a peace because they thought they'd get better terms through them than through the Americans directly. The only role the Soviets declaring war would've played in Japan's surrender is it meant there was no longer that opportunity. Manchuria and Korea were useless by that point, since America had full control of the sea and air. It's the home islands that mattered and the Soviets were far less of a threat to them than the dudes who just spent the entire war invading islands.

They were trying to avoid an unconditional surrender so they could keep their Emperor (something the US let them do anyway). The bombs in my opinion had very little to do with Japan's surrender. Think about it, Japan had pretty much already surrendered, but the US dropped nukes on them. Not just in a rural area or military location to demonstrate that they had such a weapon, but two, densely populated civilian areas. Which may means two things, both make plenty more sense than to avoid a land invasion. They nuked because 1) They had a complete disregard for foreign civilians. This idea is supported by basically the entirety of US war history to date. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the US government has tried to hide a lot of the shit they do (and there is probably a lot they managed to hide), but we still know of some massacres in these wars that were ordered by command. They also often influence politics despite the population wanting otherwise. Vietnam for example, was invaded despite vast popularity for the communist North in the country as southern Vietnam had been influenced by the US for 20 years and was being ruled by an extremely corrupt leader who fucked the countries economy. Nuking Japan because they didn't give a shit about civilian women and children seems like a pretty fair assumption. And 2) To send a message to the Soviet Union. The nukes were powerful weapons and what better way to demonstrate their power to their only threat and communist threat, than by getting a nice big kill count. I doubt Japan had much to do with it at all, the US just wanted to scare the Soviets from putting up to much opposition to the US. Even if you disagree with those two points, the US state, an advocate for peace and democracy, has been the only state in the world to use such weapons on human life. In their use, the US targeted two civilian centers. Known to be inhabited by plenty of innocent women and children. For what reason? To win a war already won. Even if in some dramatic change of events a land invasion was necessary for their surrender, it is in my opinion that soldiers should give their lives for innocent people rather than let them die instead. A soldier signs up to kill, is trained to kill and knows the risks he is taking by going to war. Innocents should not be seen as worthy sacrifices for soldiers, their nationality should not matter.

While I am not a conspiracy theorist, the government will act immorally if it needs to and will not convey this information straight to the public. Especially when they were afraid of communism growing in popularity and my belief is they did this to scare the USSR. Why would they need to invade every single island... It wasn't a video game. The Japanese were willing enough for peace. They feared an unconditional surrender due to them wanting to keep their Emperor but they knew the war was over. While one military camp did want to fight on, peace was easily within the realm of possibility. If the Americans really wanted peace, they would have got it but they were not pushing for peace diplomatically. Why may I ask, was a bomb required when everyone knew the war was over... It is well reported that the Americans did not try hard for peace through diplomatic means. They didn't even need to lose any American lives as the Soviet Union was declaring war on them and they knew that. The Japanese fleet was all but destroyed and intense fire bombing (which is also highly immoral) had taken a huge toll all across the Japanese industry. And how many American lives really needed to be lost when these islands lacked the supply production to keep the army going? Like I said, the US had complete rule of the seas. Stop any ships from getting to these islands and they would surrender without any resistance. People can't live (and definitely can't fight) without food. Even if nukes were a necessity (and they weren't) target a military facility. A port. An airfield. But targeting a high density city, twice, seems like they wanted to scare someone. Like I said before, the Japanese were already at a point of surrender. Without a navy and without allies they knew the war was lost and they knew that the bombings which had killed so many, were not gonna stop anytime soon. And if you think it was down to some samurai code, why would that stop after the nukes. The reason why peace was achieved at that point was due to the Japanese declaring an unconditional surrender. You would think that the Americans, if they really cared about ending the war without losing American lives, would, you know, solve the issue of peace diplomatically. Not by beating them into unconditional surrender. Any intelligent response or are you just gonna repeat the exact excuse the Americans made again? Cause I can kinda see a bit of holes in it personally. Or are you gonna just not read anything I said, skim over it, and make me repeat myself... Or are you gonna just write a short sentence that is just like a shitty insult or somethin? There is no 'good' guys in war. The Japanese weren't good but neither was America. America also has had a history of supporting dictators and corrupt presidents for the sake of stopping communism, just after they used their nukes. Often supporting in wars the side that the countries own people are fighting against. Vietnam being one, but there are others in Africa, South-America and Asia. Not really a stretch by any means to say they were already looking the way of the USSR before the war had officially ended. In fact, it is guaranteed.

Unfortunately, this documentary (like most politically correct ones) goes along the "Japan surprise-attacked the poor and friendly US in the Pacific", when actually: 1. The US did everything they could in the years prior to provoke a Japanese attack. 2. They knew about the upcoming attack on Pearl Harbor WEEKS in advance, through intercepted japanese communications. They could even date it down to either the 6th or 7th of December. The president had all those reports on his table but decided not to forward them to the Pearl Harbor base because the public opinion was against joining the war. So they needed an artificially contructed "atrocity" to sway the public. Like the US have always done, before and after WWII. And like they continue to do today.

By "Provoked" you mean they stopped selling materials to make weapons to the Japanese because the US had been planning to join the Allies for a while, and it's pretty obvious the US knew about pearl harbor ahead of time which is why all the aircraft carriers were at sea at the time and the base was run by a skeleton crew, doesn't change the fact that Japan attacked America first in an attempt to neuter Americas naval force

@@fugyfruit By "provoked" I mean the following (with some historical context): The Spanish-American war of 1898 marked the beginning of a new US policy to further their area of interest away from just their own continent into the far east. They wanted to claim the remaining spanish colonies overseas and access to the asian markets. The spanisch Phillipines and Guam became US colonies which needed protection, so a large fleet was built around the base on Hawaii - which was simply annexed from Japan against their official protests (~ 40% japanese population at that time). Japan had their own ideas for expansion which clashed with the american hegemonial interests, who in turn supported the Chinese in their war with Japan in 1937 to protect their business interests. After losing to Germany in 1940, the new Vichy government of France allowed Japan multiple bases in Indochina, making the US lose a market there. The US counter with a large credit to Japans opponents and add trade restrictions, cutting them off from vital resources. Foreign minister Cordell deliberately demands simply impossible concessions, like giving up their gained territories in Manchuria, China and Indochina and stop any other expansionist attempts (while the US were of course free to pursuit this themselved as they pleased). Agreeing to those demands would virtually mean political and economical suicide for Japan, which damned those negotiations from the beginning as completely unrealistic. An assistant of Roosevelt later described the american political moves: "Roosevelts policy of forcing Japan into war through political and economical pressure while deliberately presenting the US fleet at Pearl Harbor as an incentive for a surprise attack was a complete success". Ten days before the japanese attack, war minister Henry Stimson wrote into his journal that he discussed with the president how to best force the Japanese to fire the first shot without endangering the US too much. ------------------------------------------------------------------- It was all about provoking Japan into "starting" a war that the US wanted, for geostrategic reasons, sacrificing ~2400 of their people by baiting the japanese fleet into a "surprise attack" that was well know in advance, but was not relayed so that the shock would make the american public change their mind and vote for joining the war. The american ethnologist Margaret Mead once wrote that it is deeply embedded in the american character to justify their own aggressions merely as a "reaction" to those of others, no matter how much the conflict has actually been sought after and wished for. Even small children would put coins on their shoulder and provocatively walk through the streets until someone accidentally bumped into them, knocking the coins down (= "to have a chip on one's shoulder"). With Pearl Harbor, "Japan came along and pushed the chip off our shoulder and left us free to fight". In 1941, president Roosevelt was placing chips all over the world. He knew what he did and calculated in the inevitable military conflicts. "It doesn't matter who fired the first shot. What matters is what happened in the days before the shot was fired", as an israeli official once said.

Also what do you mean by "impossible" it seems very clear that the US would want Japan to give the land it took from China back to China they had sided with China it would be a completely lost war if they agreed to a peace that allowed Japan to keep all the land they took no reasonable country would accept thosr terms. So America knew there'd be an attack on Pearl harbor a few days in advance, what should they have done?
