Some Fun Facts About Top-Gun Movies: 1. Both "Top Gun" movies are primarily about the U.S. Navy and NOT the Air Force (Since many were mixing the two). 2. Yes, Tom Cruise did fly planes for real in "Top Gun: Maverick"! He holds a pilot's license and has been flying since 1994. For the movie, Cruise flew in the P-51 Mustang and other aircraft, although he wasn't piloting the high-performance jets like the F/A-18 Super Hornet; he flew backseat with experienced Navy pilots. 3. John Travolta was the first choice for Maverick. But he turned it down due to scheduling conflicts and other commitments. 4. Tom Cruise initially turned down the role of Maverick at first. It was only after flying with the Blue Angels that he decided to join the project. 5. Val Kilmer didn't want to be in the movie and initially turned down the role because he disliked the script and warmongering films. He only agreed after Tony Scott personally convinced him. 6. The original script had a different ending for Goose. The original script called for Goose's death to be the result of a midair collision, but the Navy wouldn't approve that scenario. They changed it to a more plausible accident that actually happened but didn't result in death. 7. The film was almost not made. Paramount Pictures was initially nervous about making the film and it almost didn't get produced. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer had to convince Cruise to join the project. 8. Tom Cruise's has real-life flying experience. He holds a pilot's license and flew in real planes for the movie, adding authenticity to the aerial scenes. 9. The soundtrack was a huge hit, such as the "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins and "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin, which topped the Billboard albums chart and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

I can't recall I ever heard a time of Tom speaking ill of anyone. The only controversies I've ever really heard him involved in regarded his personal life which is nobody's business. It's simply a fact that Tom got a lot of people interested in the Navy, naval aviation, and aviation in general. Akin to Bruce Lee turning people on to martial arts. I have no issues with someone being recognized for a job well done. Never claim to be in the Navy he never claimed to be in the service, and anytime I've ever heard him speak about it he always gives proper recognition to those who do serve.
