Dustin Hoffman's performance here is iconic, but Tom Cruise also played his part so well. Charlie was bitter about so much in his life, but the one good thing he'd been holding onto in his heart was "Rain Man," and that turning point where he realizes Raymond was his "Rain Man" is so cathartic.

Hey Mary, this was one of the first big-budget movies to cover and explain in depth the condition of Autism. After this movie parents who didn't understand their children's disability finally had an answer and could reach out to the correct professionals to get them help. Yes Tom Cruise's religion is bizarre. But all of his coworkers always have pleasant things to say about him. That he's caring, very professional. He buys lunches for the crew members. He also treats fans with the utmost respect. Spends hours at premieres trying to talk to and shake hands of every single fan (pre covid).

Mary, the old film clip they watched wasn't "The Three Stooges." It was Abbott and Costello. All through "Rain Man," Raymond is repeating their famous routine "Who's on First?" Abbott and Costello made a lot of movies in the 40s and 50s and had a TV series in the 50s. They have a lot of really funny videos on KZbin.

Yes, I stopped the video specifically to see if she'd already been told this because I kind of froze. Mary, the "Who's on First" routine with Abbott and Costello is one of the most famous recorded. They performed and polished it over many years, refining the timing and the relationship between the two. The routine actually landed them in the Baseball Hall of Fame, so far the only comics to be inducted there. The Three Stooges are another act altogether. Though they aren't my style, I know they are also very talented, and also went through their rougher acts to get the timing just right. (Comedy is very hard and underappreciated).

@@melenatorr A very articulate and well informed opinion. Thank you. The Three Stooges did indeed go through hard times, starting in vaudeville and struggling to get out from under Ted Healy's thumb. People in the 80s didnt know about autism. This was the first time it was brought to the public in any large scale way, and it was still probably almost 15 years later that people had any understanding of it as to how it affected people or that there was a spectrum with different symptoms and different levels of functionality.

Most of America was entirely clueless about autism when this film was made. This film was a major influence in raising awareness and understanding about autism in the US. Hoffman spent months working with specialists and autistic people in preparation for this role. Dustin Hoffman‘s most famous role (slightly, but only slightly, more famous than this one) is in The Graduate, a classic Mike Nichols film. (He had originally been cast as Leo Bloom in The Producers, but quit in order to do The Graduate.) He also played the title role in Hook. The comedy team that does the “who’s on first“routine is Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, not The Three Stooges.

I was 12 when this movie came out and it was the first genuine attempt at a depiction of the autism spectrum in mainstream media that I remember. Prior to this, depictions were mostly either the butt of jokes or something to be feared or maligned by the viewer. As was done to Ray, many people were hidden away by their family, either in institions or shuttered up in their homes, tended to far away from the public. Whether it was embarrassment or shame, or an attempt to protect the loved one from a cruel community who would mock the person, take your pick. Society at large was not as knowledgeable or enlightened, and that only 33 years ago. This movie was a breakthrough in that regard, putting an autistic character out front, demystifying and destigmatizing autism. How accurate Hoffman's portrayal is I can't say, I'm no expert, but it was a powerful performance nonetheless and it had a positive, enlightening impact (on me, at least). Now here we are, with the average person understanding the autism spectrum, with characters (and actors) who are on the spectrum now rightly represented on TV and in film. Society has come a long way.

Dustin Hoffman is the reason people (especially in NY, USA) scream "Hey, I'm walking here!" when a car gets in their path! While filming a scene for "Midnight Cowboy," a cab unexpectedly nearly hits him as he is starting to go through a crosswalk and, while staying in character, he yells that phrase to the cab driver! Tom Cruise's character was typical of the "high functioning" "yuppie" that symbolized life in the 80s and early 90s. American Psycho did a really good job of portraying this archetype personality. for Dustin Hoffman, check out Outbreak, Wag the Dog, and although I personally am not recommending these, he did win an Oscar for The Graduate, and was nominated for Tootsie. Tom Cruise: Top Gun, Mission Impossible Series, A Few Good Men (of course!) and Edge of Tomorrow.
