Great video Ramsey! Tom Ford was my first favorite designer back in the 90ies when he created Envy, Rush and Gucci pour homme. So im a fan of his style and fragrances. Even though his best fragrances have been discontinued and reformulated through the years I still consider his initial Private Blend launch with 12 fragrances as masterpieces. Scents like Amber Absolute, Velvet Gardenia, Black Violet, Purple Patchouli, and of course Moss Breches, Japon Noir and probably my favorite Bois Rouge. Some stands out are also Patchouli Absolu, Italian Cypress, Vert Boheme, Ombre de Hyacinth, Plum Japonais, Shanghai Lily, Fougere D’Argent and Oud Minerale.

Great video Ram. Watching this video reminded me that I haven’t wore Envy and TF for men in quite a while, guess I am taking the first approach unknowingly lol and also found my SOTD for tomorrow and day after. Tom Ford house, one of the first quality scents I was introduced to early in my journey and definitely had bangers before they start putting out cherry cough syrup in a bottle❌ Only missing in the ranked is Oud Wood Intense, which is imo is amazing and among the top 5 imo. I think that Tom Ford was really inspired by Indian cuisine because he used the kulfi note in NE and TV to me smells like the chai tea(which is the same thing😂) made in every Indian household.

Great video Ramsey. My full bottle Tom Fords are Grey Vetiver EDP. Private Blen bottles of Beau De Jour, Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Oud, Ombre Leather 16. All of the aforementioned are favorites with Grey Vetiver and Tobacco Oud at the top for me. Vert d'Encens could have come straight out of the 80's IMO, love that stuff same with Tom Ford Noir EDP which I'm surprised you don't have in decant. Amber Absolute and Sahara Noir I've never put my nose on but everything else on your list besides what I own in FB I have in decant including Moss Breches, Italian Cypress, Tom Ford for Men Extreme and a shitload of others. Some people trash the house and maybe its good days are behind it but I've enjoyed the hell out of it while it lasted, been fun. I've heard people say TF just released a bunch of shit and hoped it would stick...........I'm glad they did. Better than the f'ing designer houses during the same time period that you can't tell which fragrance is from whom and their 50 f'ing flankers that make no sense. IMO at least Tom Ford marched to their own beat.

I did extensive research on Mitsouko, and the 2014 version was the award winning version. I have used up a whole 15ml of 1989 vintage extrait , it smelled quite close to the 2014 EDP . Anyway, here’s what I wrote: The following information is for those who are obsessed with batches(like myself). I have researched the interesting history of MITSOUKO batches and reformulation for many days. I read all the French blogs, English blogs, and Chinese blogs that I could possibly find. In general, many people believed that before 2000, Mitsouko did not go through much of a major change (I suspect that J.P. Guerlain's reforms were going to be approved by most people anyway). Then, as far as I understand, in 2000 Edouard Fléchier, the perfumer behind the legendary "Une Rose" by Frederic Malle, took over at Guerlain to work on Mitsouko. At that time, there were already warnings that oakmoss was to be restricted, so in order to find a substitute for it, the perfumer changed the formulation and used a form of tree moss extract (Evernia Furfuracea) as a substitute. This on-and-off reformulation process probably continued until 2012. Some fragrance enthusiasts say that the scent of Mitsouko in 2007-2012 is rather thin. But the famous critic Luca Turin said that this version is pretty good. I also heard from a member that their 2010 version of EDP is quite similar to the vintage Extrait but projected better. I have not smelled the vintage extrait, so I can not comment on this.(now that I have, I can attest to the quality of Guerlain reformulations) T. Wasser entered Guerlain in 2008 with the mission of restoring the classics. In 2011 he decided to start recreating the original olfactory experience of Mitsouko from 1919. So at the end of 2013, the famous reformated version was completed, and this version has also won an award for replicating the original version of Mitsouko. This is one of the rare cases in the industry where a reformulation is widely praised. Unfortunately, this happiness did not last. In 2014, Takasago ceased the production of a methylionone compound, leading to a problem of Symrise's iriséine, which then lead to the stinky 2015 batches of Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue. From my research, there is a big problem with batches 5Txx, 5Uxx, etc. Many customers went to Guerlain's counter to complain about the off-putting scents. Guerlain then openly and officially admitted that there was something wrong with the formula, and they took action by discontinuing Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue (EDP and extrait). Interestingly, Guerlain believed that the EDT was not affected, which they continued to produce. (I feel that there is still a bit of impact, maybe avoid these batches) After intense redevelopment, blending, and testing, this crisis was finally resolved in September 2016. Some people compared 6X01 (the second-time fix) to 5N02 (the award-winning restoration of the vintage before the crisis). The chypre part of the 2013 award-winning version is more rounded and fuller than the post-crisis formulation of 2016. On the other hand, the top citrusy notes are brighter and more luminous in the newer formulation. You may not notice it unless you smell it carefully, and maceration may play a role. Between the middle to the end of 2017, Guerlain changed the packaging to a white box, the formula code also changed, and I don't know if the actual formulation has changed (the formula code seems to be determined by packaging, not formulation: a 2009 bottle has the same formula code as 2016, which does not make any sense). The ingredients list also seems different after the re-packaging. But I hear from friends that an 8A01 batch (early 2018) smells very good, even better than an EDT from the '90s, with its chypre part pretty much retained compared to the EDT, which is certainly reassuring to hear. Finally, according to my own experience, many Guerlain perfumes have been reformulated in 2019-2020, perhaps due to regulations again, for the worse (performance wise). Recently, I went into the store to try the 2022 EDP version (the pure-colored sticker), and smells good, with more emphasis on oakmoss and good longevity as well. For EDP, I had bottles of 2010, number 0v01 (this is the version that some people call "thin", some others say good). I also have a bottle of the award-winning 2013 formulation (4q01) and a re-packaged 2017 (7x02) on the way. I kept the 4q01 in the end.

@@RamseytheRam it’s interesting cuz Guerlain actually made an apology and basically admitted they had to re-source the materials. Ik what you are thinking (look at Creed) but yeah, after I used up the vintage extrait, I deicided to keep the 2014 edp. But I will say the 2022 versions lasted long and emphasized more on oakmoss, good stuff(when I put my nose on it, I lowkey preferred it over vintage extrait…)the current stuff is less sweet, but If you don’t dig your nose into your skin, you won’t notice a difference. I tend to think Guerlain as the only house that reforms their frags well. Oh and apparently, only Guerlain and Bertrand Douchafour in Chypre palatin, figured out a way to get the oakmoss scent without the allergen by using an extract and adjusting the evaporation curve or something…although…I also find Diaghilev’s oakmoss p good too

Hello Ramsey, I believe your Mitsouko Rosebud Amphora bottles are from the 50s to the 1970s. I am a long time Mitsouko wearer since about 1979. (I also have a large vintage perfume collection, mostly chypres!) I own many versions and in the 80's I bought bottle after bottle of the extrait as it was my signature perfume. I love the dark, sexy DNA in a lot of TF frags. Surprisingly, I fell in love with Noir de Noir, despite disliking every jammy, vanillic rose I've encountered. Perhaps it's because it treads lightly on the sweetness. Tobacco Vanille was an instant dislike, but I enjoy D&G The One, so perhaps I might come back around. Love the smokiness in Santal Blush and Plum Japonais. Love the peppery spice in Oud Wood, its brilliant how easy to wear it is, though I wish it had slightly more push. TF's Ombre Leather comes off as niche compared to the fragrances you would find being sold next to it. La Yuqawam is maybe less deep than the Tuscan Leather, but it's also almost 1/10th the price, for something 93% similar.

Hated TV the first time I sprayed it on me, then somehow it took me by surprise. It's actually my favorite now, it's fresh, unique & long lasting. Same as NDN too, hated at first sniff, thought it was a grandma scent, then fell in love with it unexpectedly. This also happened to a well-known brands like MFK BR540 Extrait hated it, then like it, then loved it, then was bored of it. Everyone in the office smells like it, so I moved to TV. Also hated Davidoff's Coolwater Intense, thought it was basic pretty smell. Then fell in love with it afterwards. It's fresh & light. Not too intense. I too hated Fan Your Flames by Nishane, but slowly getting warm to it now, bit by bit I get it, not hating it as much. I'm sorry pretty much all the famous basic fresh frags are not interesting enough, idk why I just thought they smelled fresh and mass appealing which was kinda generic smelling so didn't buy those frags. My nose needs times to adjust to things I guess. I never fall in love with anything at first.

Tom Ford is my favourite perfume brand. He had a lucky hand with his creation, many of them are great. What i don‘t understand is the discussion if it‘s designer or niche. I find the whole discussion worthless. Companies that reach a certain level, i mean amount of produced bottles, can‘t be considered niche. Because they do all the same: maximizing profit! That xerjoff for example, thats like designer house nowadays. For me niche is rather the small indie houses like pineward. They do experimental new stuff, something that will not happen at xerjoff and other big ones.
@Andy_T79
@Andy_T79 Жыл бұрын
It's nothing to do with that, and it's simple.... designer are fashion house's, who design and make, clothing, bags, shoes, sunglasses etc and also perfume.. . Niche houses are solely perfume specialists (even if a not very special product).
@florianwinkler2565
@florianwinkler2565 Жыл бұрын
Yeah i know this definition but that makes pretty no sense 😂 If a perfume house is good or not. But somehow nowadays niche seems to be good by definition 😂 and thats not true. @ramsey: you have to try tobacco oud intense. Its kind of the holy grail from TF. Bois marocain the first batches are great as well. For your taste „London“ should work great. Italian cypress is nice as well as oud minerale. Patchouli absolu is really a authentic patchouli smell. And oud wood intense intense is wild 😂 You really should try them all.

I think I'm the only fragrance enthusiast that bitches about/notices the lack of oakmoss/treemoss in the ingredients list of post-2013 Tom Ford private blends on the back of the boxes. I have a 2013 Tobacco Vanille and a 2010 Tuscan Leather.......the back of both boxes have both mosses in the ingredients, and they're beautiful. I ended up buying a 2016 bottle of Tuscan Leather and to me it smells like screechy nail polish in the opening, then dries down to the Tuscan Leather I sort of know, but without the raspberry note. I ended up selling it. Just awful, what the f happened to the depth, dimension, and quality? Point being, I think these private blends reaaaaaaally suffered the post-2013 oakmoss ban reformulations. I bring this up on basenotes and I get ignored. Not even on eBay do sellers seem to know/care about the older formulations unless it's a DISCONTINUED private blend fragrance, but an older formulation of a fragrance Tom Ford still sells? Forget it, eBay sellers simply aren't listing them. It's been 3 years since I've seen a listing for 2013 and older Tuscan Leather.

Yeah it is a point well taken... oakmoss was the glue that held so many of these notes together and with it gone (or esentially gone) there is no doubt that is a big part of the decline of perfume during the last decade 🤕

Very nice video. I think Tom Ford is my second favorite house.Creed being first and maybe Roja third. Serge Lutens has gained favor with me, although I'm not a big fan of Ambre Sultan, of which I have a bottle. That standard "coco powder" representation of the Amber genre is not my idea of a quintessential Amber and I'm not a big fan. My favorite Amber isn't even considered an Amber by many, or at least a pure Amber - MDCI Chypre Palatin. But I consider it an Amber, albeit a complex one with elements of other genres. I'm surprised Moss Breches isn't on your list, and maybe even at #1. I have a clone of it. I have two partial bottles of Tom Ford for Men Extreme and it is indeed very good. Love the truffle note. Anyway, here are my favorite first few Tom Ford's ranked: 1. Beau de Jour 2. (Tie) Ombre Leather and Oud Wood 3. Grey Vetiver 4. (Tie) Tom Ford for Men Extreme and Tobacco Vanille and Black Orchid 5. Fougere D'Argent I have tons of Tom Ford clones. Some of my other favorite Tom Ford scent profiles based on clones, that would love real bottles of are Plum Japonais, Tobacco Oud, Lavender Extreme. I also have two 15ml bottles (they made 15ml in same bottle design) of Gucci Envy for Men, and two "can" bottles of YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme. I think Rive Gauche Pour Homme is worth more than $100. Its considered by many to be the quintessential Barbershop Fougere. I have a bottle of the YSL M7 in the later collection, but I don't like the scent profile.

@@RamseytheRam That makes sense. But you should include ALL sources - full bottles, partial bottles, decants, one test wear, whatever - in your rankings. That way it's all inclusive and more comprehensive and complete. And won't create questions like I had. It's like when you didn't include Amber frags that didn't explicitly list the amber as an "Amber" note in Basenotes or Fragrantica even though lots of fragrances break out the Amber accord in its constituent notes (vanilla, benzoin etc).

When I was just getting into the YT comm, the private line was still considered niche. Probably one of the only times I disagree with you 😄.... and I know you're ranking what you have in your collection, so it's more Tom Ford's fault as they pulled fragrances quick if they weren't mass pleasing hits. Now the real gems are rare and expensive, but to me are still the best ones, japon noir, black violet, moss breches, purple patchouli, patchouli absolute, Italian Cypress, london, (sahara noir - i know you want) tobacco oud intense and I do love tobacco oud, but the intense is on another level, which can't be said of other intense versions. Ombre 16 is also so far superior to ombre leather, I have both and there's distinct differences to me. And lastly Tuscan leather I agree is immense, but it has to be an early bottle, I have a few drops in a 2009 bottle and compared to later bottles which I had and sold it's a monster in comparison to the watered down versions and sadly that was a trend that continued as even the ones that survived are a shadow of their former selves.... hence the reason you get people new to the game, saying TF, Amouage, Creed ect 'aren't all that' and that is because they can only sample them as they are now and not what they once were... which is sad.

@@RamseytheRam Let me refine my previous comment - I am not categorically against clones. Clones do have their place, especially when : 1. The original has been discontinued. 2. The original was butchered by reformulation (it's a sort of discontinuation). 3. The original itself is not an original but sort of a clone by itself (TFNP comes to mind, builds on 4711. Thus I wouldn't say Al Haramain's Neroli Canvas is a 100% clone of NP). 4. The "clone" is really a different interpretation of a certain vibe. So it is not trying to clone the original one to one, but rather an inspired-by scent. It's a fine line, but for me, I know when I smell (PdM Godolphin comes to mind, as it is an office-safe version of TL. As I mentioned previously, I adore TL but it's too in-your-face for the office. I use Godolphin for the office, and TL otherwise). Btw, I own Neroli Canvas (in addition to the TF Neroli trio) because of the performance. I layer them together. TF's Neroli perfumes' performance is pathetic. After 2 hours it's gone. Neroli Canvas remains on my skin for a further few hours, and in the deep dry-down it gets close enough to NP, so it's perfect for layering. NC is the only middle eastern perfume I own (I couldn't find a single Amouage I liked enough to buy a bottle).
