Their foresight was non existent. They planted the seed. Watch one of the first 3 episodes of the original Star Trek series (also 50 years old). You'll see all the technology we use today from the mouse to the tablet. Why does everyone think we would have flying cars by now? Because they saw it on an old TV show or movie, simple as that. The creatives (writers, artists) are the creative ones, the engineers just hack their ideas into reality.
